Vauxhall Cascada, 2013

  •  Vauxhall Cascada, 2013

Based on price, the Cascada's key competitors include the Volkswagen Eos and Golf Cabriolet, the BMW 1-Series Convertible and the Audi A3 Cabriolet. Vauxhall's latest offering is also longer than many other rival convertibles including premium offerings such as the Audi A5 Cabriolet and the BMW 3-Series Convertible.

At nearly 4.7 metres in length, the full size, four-seat, fabric-roof Cascada convertible is longer than an Audi A5 Convertible. It is also the first full-sized convertible designed, engineered and manufactured by Vauxhall since the 1930s. The all-new Vauxhall Cascada full-size convertible launches the company into a fourth new sector in a year, following on from its Ampera, Mokka and Adam models.

While the Cascada shares its dimensions with some full-sized convertibles, Vauxhall is positioning it in the C-sector due to its highly competitive pricing. The C-segment accounts for approximately one per cent of the total UK car market or around 21,000 units per annum and Vauxhall expects the Cascada to make up approximately ten per cent of this segment's volume per year.
As with all Vauxhalls, first Cascada owners will benefit from Lifetime Warranty, lasting the life of the car or up to 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

DESIGN
Cascada's design team, originally headed by Brit Mark Adams, has created a car with classic lines, redolent of the Grandes Routieres (luxury touring cars) of a bygone age, matched with a capacious cabin and high-quality materials.

Exterior Design
At 4696mm long and 1839mm wide (excluding mirrors), Vauxhall Cascada has a broad stance and elegant lines. With the top down, it has a perfectly clean profile with no roof-top cover or visible roll-over protection disturbing the car's silhouette aft of the steeply-raked A-pillar.

The subtle 'blade' on the Cascada's lower body side is mirrored by a sharp crease that swings upward and meets with the wraparound rear light cluster. A gently rising waistline is highlighted by a chrome strip that borders the cockpit, marking the boundary between roof-top and body.

Sculpted with a purposeful power bulge, Cascada's bonnet tops a deep front grille with bold chrome applications. The fog lights are carried in two overturned 'sharkfin' elements, which are enhanced by chrome inserts. Using LED technology, the daytime running lights in the headlamps and the rear lights incorporate Vauxhall's 'wing' signature. In the rear, the LED modules are diffused to give a solid and sharp light signal - typical of cars in the premium sector. A chrome strip linking the boot-mounted light units matches a similar bar across the front of the car.

The Cascada's fabric roof can be specified in one of three colours, which can be coordinated with one of ten body colours. Other personalisation options include an array of six different alloy wheel choices with sizes up to 20-inch.

Interior
The Vauxhall Cascada's cabin mixes the well-equipped functionality of an Insignia's interior with handcrafted modules not found in any other Vauxhall.

Wrapped in a soft-touch material with high-quality stitching, the instrument cluster tops a wing-shaped panel which flows into the doors and frames the area around each front occupant. All-new, deeply contoured seats are available in a range of embossed fabrics and leathers, and customers have the option of ergonomic, Nappa-leather trimmed seats, which can be heated or ventilated. An Easy Entry system allows access to the rear seats, and electric seat belt presenters make securing front occupants less of a chore.

With a minimum load volume of 280 litres with the roof down, and up to 380 litres roof up, the Cascada is an exceptionally practical convertible. In addition, the rear seats benefit from Vauxhall's FlexFold system, which electrically releases and folds down the 50:50 split rear seats, allowing longer objects to be carried with ease.

In the cabin, several large storage spaces are available: one in each door and one under the instrument panel, and thanks to the use of a standard Electronic Park Brake across the range, a further cubby is located between the front seats.

CHASSIS, DYNAMICS & BODY CONSTRUCTION
Maximising torsional stiffness in a convertible's body is critical to maintaining a high standard of vehicle dynamics. Despite being significantly larger than Vauxhall's last convertible model, the TwinTop, by 71mm in its wheelbase and 56mm/70mm (front/rear) in its tracks, the Cascada's body is 43 per cent stiffer torsionally and 10 per cent more resistant to bending forces.

Targeted underbody strengthening helps the Cascada achieve these figures. Crossed steel bars are mounted to the Watt's link, across the B-pillars and front subframe, while high-strength tubular steel reinforcement sits inside each of the A-pillars. Collectively, these stiffen the body substantially, leading to precise handling and an exceptionally high degree of acoustic comfort.

Chassis
Vauxhall's HiPerStrut suspension has been adapted from the 325ps Insignia VXR and employed at the front of the Cascada. The HiPerStruts combine all the benefits of a conventional MacPherson strut set-up - compact packaging and light weight - but without the drawbacks of that system, such as torque-steer and a loss of traction under hard cornering. The HiPerStrut achieves this by a reduction in kingpin inclination, meaning no loss of negative camber during cornering, and therefore greater stability overall.

At the rear, the Cascada uses a combination of compound crank and Watt's link, with the thickness of each different model's axle beam varying to cater for different kerbweights. The Watt's link rods are connected to a cross member just behind the rear wheels' centre line. Any lateral force exerted on one side is compensated for by an equal force on the opposite wheel.

Cars using a compound crank and Watt's link are rare in the industry, but it's an innovative solution which provides a unique blend of excellent packaging and strong rear-end stability during cornering.

Unique steering programme for UK drivers
Precision, feedback and confidence. These were the three target elements for the Cascada's UK-specific steering programme. The challenge was to maintain the system's ease of use at lower speeds, but dial in a greater degree of involvement and slightly more effort at higher speeds.

The Cascada uses a rack and pinion steering system with speed sensitive assistance. But in order to provide drivers with more steering feedback, the system's electric motor is mounted directly on the steering rack, as opposed to the base of the steering column.

The key benefits of using electric power steering (EPS) are well known. At low speeds, the level of power assistance is increased to minimise steering effort. At higher speeds, assistance is automatically reduced to ensure a high degree of steering feel for the driver. The second important benefit is that, because it does not require an energy consuming hydraulic pump and responds directly to the amount of power needed at any speed, fuel consumption is also reduced.

FlexRide enhances Cascada's driver appeal still further
FlexRide, Vauxhall's adaptive damping system, will be available as a £790 option across the Cascada range, complementing the significant revisions to the new model's chassis. FlexRide automatically adapts to prevailing road surfaces and driving styles, providing drivers with fully optimised handling, even in the event of an emergency situation.

At the heart of FlexRide is the Driving Mode Control (DMC) which oversees and executes the system's settings, allowing the car to react to sudden changes in driving style or emergency situations. For example, if the driver needs to avoid an obstacle while in 'Tour' mode - the softest of the three settings - chassis sensors convey this to the DMC and the dampers are adjusted in a split second.

Standard mode (the default setting) reacts in the same way as Tour, but when drivers select Sport they not only get stiffer dampers, but more steering effort, sharper throttle response and an instrument panel that's back-lit in red, rather than white. Each of these settings can be dialled in or out of Sport mode via the Cascada's configurator.

ALL SEASON FUNCTIONALITY
Crucially for weather-hardened UK buyers, Vauxhall Cascada will feature a high-quality fabric hood, with optional superior acoustic and thermal insulation thanks to a special layer of polyester fleece between the outer and inner linings.

The key point of any convertible is the roof which on the Cascada is aerodynamically clean and refined, fits perfectly to the pillar less style of the car and disappears completely below a high quality tonneau cover when lowered. As well as reducing the vehicle weight by approximately 100kg compared to a hard top, the soft top also measurably lowers noise inside the car.

Making the Cascada a practical year-round car, the hood can be opened in just 17 seconds, at speeds up to 30mph by an interior switch, or via a button on the key fob.

The operating switch is conveniently located in the lower centre console. Operation is instinctive, the hand naturally dropping onto it, allowing the driver to keep his or her attention firmly on the road. All windows can be opened or closed and locked in just four seconds by operating the four-windows-switch.

Heavily tested by Vauxhall engineers, the electro-hydraulic mechanism for the roof has been opened and closed 15,000 times, corresponding to ten years of usage with four operations per day. The roof can be operated from -5 to +85 degrees Celsius.

Boot space of 280 litres when the roof is opened gives more flexibility to drive top-down even with big loads in the boot. Loading capacity can also be extended by 50:50 flex fold rear seats for longer and bigger objects with up to 750 litre loading capacity. This is not possible with other C Segment HardTop rivals.

Standard Soft Top
The standard two-layer soft top has a premium class three-layer exterior fabric made of highly-resistant polyacryl, an elastomeric rubber combining film and a backing fabric. Worldwide testing at extreme temperatures has proved that it is absolutely weather proof and insulation is superior to a retractable hard top. It needs no regular impregnation and is UV resistant so that it remains long-term colour fast, keeping the car looking good. The roof is also car wash proof.

The visible inside lining is made of woven polyacryl. Between these two layers is an insulating layer of air.

Acoustic Soft Top
The optional acoustic soft top offers even better noise and thermal comfort with acoustically enhanced exterior fabric and by adding a special layer of polyester fleece between the top layer and the interior lining. This improves thermal insulation and further reduces the noise level in the cabin by up to a third (-3 dB) helping to create a quieter and more relaxed interior ambience.

Detachable Windbreakers
A foldable windbreaker can be mounted behind the front seats. It is fixed on recesses in the side trim behind the rear seats and near the rear seat backrests. The upper part can be folded into vertical position to deflect wind, the horizontal part stays fixed, so the rear seats cannot be occupied when the front seat windbreaker is mounted.

A small windbreaker can be mounted between the rear head-rests to reduce drafts on the rear seats.

Both windbreakers come in a purpose-made bag that can be stored and fixed behind the rear seat backrests.

POWERTRAINS
The Vauxhall Cascada will come with a broad range of powerful and efficient engines. Starting the line-up is a 1.4-litre (140PS) Turbo petrol, with a manual gearbox, achieving a combined 44.8mpg and 148g/km CO2, and a 2.0-litre (165PS) diesel engine with manual and automatic transmissions, achieving up to 54.3mpg combined and 138g/km CO2. Both engines have start/stop technology.

But the highlight of Cascada's powertrain line-up is the all-new 1.6 SIDI Turbo ECOTEC petrol engine. The first production engine from Vauxhall's MGE (Mid-Size Gasoline Engine) family, the unit offers major improvements in torque, linearity and overall efficiency. It produces a maximum 170PS from 1650-3200rpm and up to 280Nm of torque, giving a 0-60 time of 9.2 seconds and top speed of 135mph. This engine will be available shortly after launch with a new, low-friction automatic six-speed gearbox that contributes towards combined fuel consumption of 39.2mpg and emissions of 168g/km.

To improve performance and refinement, one of the key engine development objectives for engineers was to lower overall levels of radiated noise and vibration, with no unusual sounds. Optimisation of the induction and exhaust systems included decoupling the cam cover from the cylinder head via specific fasteners, and a sealing system designed to resist high temperatures from the adjacent turbocharger.

With direct injection and pulsed combustion, engineers were able to substantially reduce noise levels compared to the previous engine. As a result of these 'sound-engineering' measures, customers will appreciate quiet and smooth idling, with a pleasant sound quality even at high road speeds, engine speeds and loads. The engine provides the perfect basis for gentle, smooth open-air cruising, while always keeping immediate propulsion power at the ready as needed.

A high-performance 2.0 (195PS) Bi-Turbo diesel engine with manual transmission will also be available shortly after launch. The Bi-Turbo achieves a combined 138g/km and 54.3mpg, yet accelerates from 0-60mph in just 8.9 seconds up to a top speed of 143mph.

New Generation Transmissions
In addition to impressive new engines, there are also new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The latest generation Vauxhall manual transmissions enable even more precise and smoother gear shifting. Engineers have achieved shorter shift patterns, while at the same time reducing shift forces. To achieve this, the six-speed manual transmission was comprehensively reworked with modifications to the shift mechanism. These measures focused on increased efficiency, with further improved precision, shift forces and comfort when the transmission is cold or hot.

The focal points in the development of the second generation six-speed automatic transmission are increased efficiency and faster shift times, together with lower noise and vibration. Thanks to a small torque converter, engineers were able to reduce inertia. Optimised bearings, joint rings and friction elements also ensure a higher degree of efficiency. A further key feature is the coil spring inside the torque converter, for which the spring rate has been halved to improve vibration damping. This advanced automatic transmission is available with both the 1.6 SIDI Turbo petrol engine and the 2.0 turbo diesel.

TECHNOLOGY
The Vauxhall Cascada brings together all Vauxhall's latest, innovative technology as part of the UK offer. This includes options like: AFL+ (Adaptive Forward Lighting) with up to 11 automatic lighting functions; Front Camera System, including Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indication and Forward Collision Alert; rear-view camera; heated steering wheel; Hill Start Assist; Side Blind Spot Alert.

Using an extremely rigid passenger cell made mainly from high-strength steel, the Cascada is designed for the least deformation and largest possible survival space in the event of a crash. Its doors have diagonally-mounted ultra-high strength steel beams and beltline reinforcements. The A-pillars supporting the windscreen are made from press-hardened steel. And in the event of a roll-over incident, pyrotechnically activated, spring-loaded high strength bars automatically deploy behind the rear seats. These pop-ups are also triggered during other severe impacts, eg. when airbags are deployed. Front seats both benefit from two-way active headrests and double seat belt pre-tensioners; even the two rear seats benefit from seat belt pre-tensioners.

With its German rivals firmly in its sights, the Cascada offers affordability paired with outstanding levels of equipment, technology and luxury.

Adaptive Forward Lighting
AFL is optional across the Cascada range at a cost of £790, and incorporates dark-style bi-xenon lights, LED daytime running lights and high-pressure headlamp washers. It offers drivers eight unique light settings which are selected automatically depending on road and weather conditions:
Static Cornering: Throws light 90 degrees left or right for enhanced lateral vision
Dynamic Curve Light: Activated by steering angle and speed, allowing lights to swivel by up to 15 degrees

Both front seats are now standard with memory settings.

Powerful 4.0-liter V6 Helps Take 4Runner Anyplace, Anytime
The 4Runner 4.0-liter V6 generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque. Dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine's operating range. Fuel economy ratings rival some crossover SUVs with an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for 4x2 models, and 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway for 4x4. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds and all vehicles feature an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness as standard equipment.

Toyota 4Runner Balances Full Off-Road Capability with Smooth Around-town Handling

A double-wishbone independent front suspension, combined with a variable-flow rack-and-pinion steering, help give the 4Runner precise control on demanding roads. Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four wheels for a comfortable ride and controlled handling. The four-link rear suspension maximizes off-road axle articulation, whileproviding a smooth ride for rear-seat passengers on and off pavement.

The Limited grade comes standard with an X-REAS suspension system that further improves performance, comfort and control. With X-REAS, 4Runner corners flatter, smoother, and handles choppy pavement more easily. X-REAS automatically adjusts the damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering. The system uses a center control absorber to cross-link shocks on opposite corners of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs.

The 4Runner SR5 and Trail 4x4 models have a two-speed, part-time four-wheel-drive system with neutral position, maximizing fuel efficiency when a 4x4 configuration isn't needed. The Toyota 4Runner Limited is equipped with a full-time, four-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch.

The A-TRAC traction control system is standard equipment on all 4x4 models. The system can distribute driving force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, making terrain irregularities and slippery patches virtually transparent to the driver. An electronic-locking rear differential is standard on the Trail grade.

The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with superior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of functional upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast. The Trail grade offers an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). KDSS significantly improves terrain-following ability by dynamically disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow, difficult terrain.

Toyota's Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade. The system helps maintain an appropriate speed to keep the vehicle under control and minimizes the load on drivetrain and suspension components.

With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates engine speed and output (along with braking force), to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus on steering over rough level ground or steep grades without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal.

The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system that dials in wheel-slip control to match the terrain. In loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle's favor. On bumpy moguls, or solid rock, wheel slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip differential. The Mogul setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges, uphill or down.

All models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to hold the vehicle stationary before starting on a steep incline or slippery surface. All 4Runner 4x4 models feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by helping to hold the vehicle, allowing time for the driver to a target speed with no driver intervention.

Versatility and Convenience Provide Comfort and Utility
An array of convenience features and versatile seating configurations provide the 2014 4Runner with ample passenger comfort and utility. Fold-flat second-row seats provide a level load floor in the 4Runner, and it is not necessary to remove the headrests to fold the seats flat. The available third-row seat is split 50/50 and folds flat. The seats can be folded from the side or at the rear, using separate one-touch levers. With this arrangement, more cargo space is available without removing seats, and longer items can be conveniently carried.

A Smart Key system featuring keyless entry with push-button start is standard on the Limited grade. The system allows the driver to unlock or start the vehicle by carrying the keyless remote. The cargo door window has jam control, like the moonroof and power side windows.

An available pull-out cargo deck is capable of carrying up to 440 pounds to make loading and unloading heavy items easier and to provide seating for tailgating and campsite relaxation.

All Toyota 4Runner models come standard with a 120V outlet and two additional 12V outlets.

A front and rear clearance sonar system is standard on Limited models, and a rear-view backup camera is now standard on all 4Runner models. The system displays in the audio screen, increasing visibility at the rear of the vehicle.

New Audio Systems Include Standard Entune™ Multimedia System

Standard on all audio systems is a unique "party mode" audio setting that is ideal for tailgating, raises bass response and shifts sound balance to the rear of the vehicle. Party mode is in addition bolstered by rear liftgate-mounted speakers, which function with or without party mode selected. The pole antenna has been dropped in favor of a new in-glass antenna.

Toyota's Exclusive Star Safety System, Eight Standard Airbags, Safety Connect

The 4Runner features Toyota's standard Star Safety System™ that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system. VSC helps the driver to ensure control by compensating for front and rear wheel slip. The system uses selective braking and modulated engine output to help keep the vehicle in line with the driver's steering inputs. On 4x2 vehicles, the Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential) system allows for better traction on slippery sections of roadway. The four-wheel ABS with EBD provides the Toyota 4Runner with optimal brake proportioning, regardless of vehicle load.

Eight standard airbags includes front, side-mounted and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side-curtain airbags for the second and third rows. All 2014 4Runners have active headrests for driver and passenger, and three-point seat belts for all seats.

Subaru WRX Concept, 2013

  •  Subaru WRX Concept, 2013

The Subaru of America, Inc. unveiled the Subaru WRX Concept at the 2013 New York International Auto Show at the Jacob K. Javits Center. The design concept hints at the design language of the next generation WRX.

The bold and muscular design emphasizes turbocharged power and AWD grip in a more agile and athletic form. The Subaru WRX Concept blends the WRX's famous power and road-holding prowess with an even greater focus on sharp handling, steering and communicative chassis. To further improve handling dynamics, the Subaru WRX Concept features a carbon-fiber roof to enhance the already low center of gravity and reduce weight.

Considerably lower, sleeker and wider, the Subaru WRX Concept delivers even more street presence than previous generations of WRX. The new grille design is larger and bolder and sets off the classic WRX hood scoop. A pronounced power bulge provides clearance for the new turbocharged engine and inter cooler. A prominent hexagonal grille form and deep lower valences with air intakes are designed to enhance aerodynamics, add down force and aid engine cooling.

The 3 dimensional mesh pattern of the grille denotes the sporting nature of the Subaru WRX Concept and sets the Subaru star cluster apart, while the new hawk-eye headlights integrate the Subaru family design heritage.

A sharp character line runs from the front corner through to the taillights, intersected by the boldly flared wheel arches emphasizing the Subaru's AWD system. The compact cabin greenhouse draws attention to the power and solidity of the body and focuses attention to wide stance that provides a visual link between body and chassis.

The rear design echoes the hexagonal design motif from the front grille and features a dramatically curved trunk lid that also acts as a rear spoiler. The distinctive wide rear bumper of the Subaru WRX Concept adds to the powerful street presence of the car and is off-set by large quad tailpipes denoting the powerful turbocharged engine. The aggressive rear diffuser improves vehicles aerodynamics.

The all-new Subaru WRX Concept features a new paint color, "WR Blue Pearl III", which modernizes the iconic WRX look. Fluorescent Yellow is used as an accent on the WRX badge on the front grille, the brake calipers and the exhaust tip finishers, adding character notes to the design.

Filling out the broad fenders are BBS "RI-D" One Piece Forged Duralumin wheels and featuring 245/40ZR20 Dunlop tires with an exclusive tread pattern.

SsangYong Turismo, 2013

  • SsangYong Turismo, 2013
The Design
SsangYong's designers have gone to great lengths to create a distinctive and innovative look to its new MPV to satisfy owners and opinion formers alike. The brief was to create a practical yet at the same time luxurious and dignified tone that would blend well with the car's numerous roles. Combining strength with volume, the front of the car has a robust stance thanks to its hexagonal shaped radiator grille and trapezoidal bumper, and the overall design successfully disguises its large exterior size.

The new SsangYong Turismo arrives in the UK almost without competition. At over 5 metres long and with a 3 metre wheelbase, the car is larger than a standard sized MPV such as the Ford Galaxy, Renault Grand Scenic or SEAT Alhambra, yet is a car rather than a van-derived 'people carrier' like the Hyundai i800, Mercedes Viano or VW Caravelle.

Consequently its huge interior space and flexible passenger and load carrying capability means it can carry seven adults and 875 litres of luggage, through to two adults and 3,146 litres of load space, with seven alternative passenger and load combinations to choose from.

Designed to appeal as family, leisure and business transportation, the new car blends multi-role flexibility with great ride comfort and the appointments and equipment levels of a luxury saloon.

Interior
Thanks to its 3,000mm wheelbase, the car provides a huge interior space where seven adults can travel in supreme comfort with their luggage loaded in the back, without having to compromise on passenger accommodation. There are three rows of seats as well as a large load space which can be further increased by removing the third row completely. The second row of seats provides convenient 'walk through' access to the third row, and can also be folded individually and used as tables while still providing sufficient space to accommodate airline style seat-back folding tables.

Powertrain
The Turismo is powered by SsangYong's own 2.0 litre turbo charged e-XDi200 diesel engine offering a level of performance and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) control that has already been tested, proven and praised in the marketplace.

The e-XDi200 engine offers maximum power of 155PS/4,000rpm and maximum torque of 360Nm/1,500-2,800rpm, and is designed to provide low end torque whatever the conditions on or off road.

There's a choice of 6-speed manual transmission and 5-speed Mercedes-Benz T-Tronic automatic transmission, ensuring world class durability, smooth gear changing performance and quiet operation.

SsangYong Turismo EX with 4x4
While rear wheel drive features across the range, the top of the range EX includes selectable 4x4 with low ratio as standard. This makes the Turismo EX a car you really can rely on, no matter what the British winter throws at us. It is also an especially practical proposition for those who tow a caravan, horsebox or boat trailer, or whose other country and leisure activities necessitate driving across challenging terrain. As with other SsangYong Turismo models the EX has an impressive 2.5 tonne towing capability.

Ride & handling
The new SsangYong Turismo utilises double wishbone front suspension and rear independent multi-link suspension for executive saloon style ride quality. This set-up offers a quiet and comfortable driving environment with firm body motion control, a flat ride and optimum stability regardless of the road conditions.

Safety
The car features a comprehensive package of active safety features, including Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Active Roll over Protection (ARP) and Brake Assist System (BAS). There are dual front and side air bags, while ISO-Fix and tether anchorage points for child seats are fitted on the second row. Passive safety is further increased thanks to two high strength sub-frames fitted to the front and rear of the car. These help to disperse any impact shocks from a frontal or off-set collision and protect passengers by minimising cabin distortion.

Luxury, comfort, convenience
Noted for its comprehensive levels of standard equipment, SsangYong has ensured that the new Turismo delivers a high level of luxury, comfort and convenience. Air conditioning, electrically operated & heated door mirrors, a leather covered steering wheel and gear knob, and an MP3 CD & RDS radio with a USB & auxiliary port and Bluetooth connectivity feature across the range, while from the ES model, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats and rear parking sensors also feature. The EX also gets a heated lower windscreen to prevent the wipers from freezing, solar controlled glass and rain sensitive wipers to make driving easier, while eco cruise control is standard on the ES automatic and EX.

Spyker B6 Venator Spyder Concept, 2013

  •  Spyker B6 Venator Spyder Concept, 2013

Just 5 months after unveiling the B6 Venator Coupe Concept to rave reviews at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Spyker made waves on the other side of the Atlantic. The brand introduced the Spyker B6 Venator Spyder Concept, a unique alternative in the High Luxury Sports sector, via a press conference at 2013 The Quail Motorsports Gathering in Pebble Beach, California. The Spyker B6 Venator Spyder Concept is the eagerly awaited convertible execution of Spyker's compact, 2-door mid-engine sports car that will offer the discerning driver of the highest standards a new choice, delivering a rare combination of heritage, design, performance and exclusivity.

Exterior
  • The trademark radiator grille's mesh is V-shaped, referencing Spyker models of the previous century. The 1903 Spyker logo harkens back to an era when Spyker built racers such as the amazing 60HP.
  • The headlights, equipped with LED light rails, give the car an aggressive stance.
  • The 3D LED rear lights are akin to the iris-type after burners of a jet engine from a modern fighter aircraft.
  • The brake light has been sculpted into the rear panel design to ensure smooth, flowing design lines.
  • Elegantly aggressive 19" TurbofanTM wheels are shown in mirror polish finish.
  • The brand's axiom "Nulla tenaci invia est via" - which translates to "For the tenacious no road is impassable" - is shown on the fairings.
Interior
  • Interior surroundings crafted from the finest materials are unusually open and airy for a sports car, akin to an aeroplane cockpit. The leather is sourced from the Litano range produced by the Royal Hulshof Dutch Tanneries in Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands. Hulshof uses only West European first choice bull hides and a special tanning process that produces the beautifully rich colour palette.
  • The red cover on the ignition switch evokes the spirit of starting an aeroplane, as does the dashboard that lights up as part of the 'pre-flight check.' The dashboard is shown with a turned aluminium fascia, similar to those seen on Spykers of the 1920s.
  • Pressing the engine start button brings to life a powerful V6 engine that delivers 375+ bhp.
  • The trademark exposed gear change mechanism was inspired by early aircraft controls from Spyker's aviation heritage.

Smart Four Joy Concept, 2013

  •  Smart Four Joy Concept, 2013

Numerous design elements are a reference to the first smart model series. These include the extremely short overhangs, the wheels positioned on the four most outer points, the tail lights integrated in the sturdy tridion cell and the spherical instrument cluster.
More than two seats are also fully in keeping with the smart brand experience: the smart four joy proves this. The study has all the typical smart attributes and embodies pure carefree enjoyment of urban life. The compact four-seater is the forerunner of a new smart generation and is celebrating its world premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 2013 .

No doors, no rear window and an open roof - the smart four joy dispenses with unnecessary ballast. At the same time this gives viewers an unhindered view of the futuristic interior with its striking rear seat bench in the style of lounge furniture. This means that the vehicle has ample space for four people.

With its compact dimensions (length/width/height: 3494/1978/1494 millimetres) and a turning circle of 9.1 metres the smart fourjoy boasts the agility typical of the brand and is able to show off its strengths, especially in cities around the world. And thanks to the state-of-the-art electric drive with a 55 kW magneto-electric motor the zero-local-emission smart fourjoy offers agile driving performance without any shift delays.

What's more, the four-seater has inherited many of the genes of the original smart. "The smart fourjoy is the perfect icon of our smart design philosophy that is being carried into a new era. For the first time we are showing the future sporty four-seater character of the new smart family," says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. "The typical smart silhouette, the clear lines and styling and also the further development of the smart face make this study a modern design icon."

The exterior: polished aluminium meets white pearlescent paintwork
The study shows that smart is becoming more grown-up. The deliberately three-dimensional, upright front gives it a very expressive appearance that greets the viewer with a fresh smile that is both friendly and assertive. The smart fourjoy proudly displays the large brand emblem on the front grille. The honeycomb structure of the air inlets on the front and the convex and sensuously shaped body surfaces emphasise the family relationship to the studies smart for-us (Detroit 2012) and smart forstars (Paris 2012).

The extremely pronounced tridion cell is a new feature. On the study it is made of polished full-aluminium and its brilliant bright lustre finish emphasises the premium character of the brand.

The raised smart lettering milled from aluminium on the side skirts is a further sign of the top quality. The pearlescent white on the bumpers, front bonnet and tailgate provides a contrast to the aluminium of the tridion cell. The door mirrors "float" on an aluminium stele.

A look back to the future: as with the first-generation smart fortwo the rear lights are integrated in the tridion cell. Like turbines, cubes have been incorporated into the plexiglass there. The headlamps do not have a glass cover and this reinforces the three-dimensional impression of the U-shaped daytime running lights. LEDs are exclusively fitted in the front and tail lights.

Transparent petroleum-coloured moulded parts emphasise the upbeat character of the study. They are found in the wind deflector at the top of the front windscreen, on the A-pillars on the sides and on the rear roof spoiler. The function and colour are reminiscent of 1990s tennis caps.

The interior: futuristic lounge seats for four
Without doors, a rear window or roof panel the smart fourjoy really brings the city inside. Elements that connect the exterior and the interior are the handles for driver and passenger on the side sills and the openings in the roof structure.

The most striking interior features are the two futuristic-looking front seats and the rear seat bench with a similar design. With their organic, sculptural shape they are reminiscent of modern lounge furniture.

The seat shell has a harmonious design. The rear of the seats is made of dark chrome. A piping-like line winds around the sides of the seats with the same petroleum colour as the plexiglass accents on the exterior. Perforated and smooth surfaces alternate on the vehicle floor. As the floor is dark the seats seem to float.

The seats and the instrument panel are supported by a continuous central structure. It features a convex surface with touch-sensitive operating functions.

The instrument panel gives the impression of depth, and with a honeycomb structure and fading it takes up two themes of the exterior. The solid instrument panel support is made of transparent, illuminated plexiglass into which apertures have been milled. The striking multidimensional honeycomb structure was created by moulding on white plastic with a pearlescent effect in these areas. The design of the spherical instrument cluster and the single-spoke steering wheel are reminiscent of the original smart. Two smartphones are mounted on the dashboard and on the centre tunnel at the rear for cutting-edge connectivity and tailor-made entertainment for all four passengers.

The drive: driving fun with zero local emissions
The electric drive housed at the rear is based on the current smart for two electric drive. Thanks to the 55 kW magneto-electric motor the smart four joy is agile and lively to drive.

The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 17.6 kWh. When completely empty it takes a maximum of seven hours to fully charge the battery at a household socket or charging station on the electricity systems of most countries, i.e. overnight. The charging time at a wall box or public charging station can be shortened to less than one hour with the 22 kW on-board charger and a rapid charging cable.

For the last mile: electric skateboards and helmets
Two long boards are fastened on the roof of the smart four joy. With these electrically driven skateboards it is possible to cover short distances in the city without producing any local emissions.

Helmets are stowed under the rear seats. A high-definition camera that is simple to remove is also attached here. This enables long board riding to be filmed and subsequently shared with friends on social networks.

Skoda Octavia RS, 2014

  •  Skoda Octavia RS, 2014

The new Å koda Octavia RS offers a completely newly designed generation of infotainment radio and GPs systems. The newest model includes the Swing CD-radio with TFT monochrome display as standard equipment, together with four speakers in front and four in the rear. In addition to basic radio features, Swing offers a CD drive, an SD card slot, and a USB and AUX-In port that can accommodate an MP3 player or other devices.

Infotainment radio and GPS systems are also available for the new Å koda Octavia RS. More sophisticated systems use up to 8" touch displays with proximity sensors. The sound-optimized CANTON sound system provides pure listening enjoyment for the passenger cabin.

The new Å koda Octavia RS is a continuation of the current model offensive of the Czech automaker Å koda. With its top speed of 248 km/h, the new RS is the fastest production Octavia of all time. Beginning in July 2013, the third RS generation will be entering markets both as a saloon and as an estate. Both model versions are equipped with powerful yet efficient engines, and they boast classy design as well as innovative technology. Furthermore, the new RS models offer all of the Å koda Octavia's outstanding features: outstanding functionality, ample room, top-notch safety, state-of-the-art safety and comfort assistance systems, and excellent value.

The Å koda Octavia has always represented 'a bit more car'. The new Octavia RS represents this tradition as well. "Here's a car that is not stingy with superlatives: It is the fastest and most economical, the largest, roomiest, safest, smartest and most comfortable Å koda Octavia RS that has ever been produced. The new Octavia RS marries power, technology and utility, and it is a perfect car for everyday use and recreation," says Frank Welsch, Å koda board member for technical development.

New engines with more power and lower fuel consumption
Customers can choose between a 162 kW (220 hp) two-litre petrol engine and a 135 kW (184 hp) two-litre diesel engine in the Å koda Octavia RS. Compared with the second-generation Octavia RS, the new engines have up to 10 percent more power while saving up to 19 percent in fuel. Start-stop and regenerative braking systems are standard features. Both engines are available with a manual or a DSG dual clutch transmission, each as a six-speed.

With the 2.0 TSI/162 kW (220 hp) petrol engine, the Å koda Octavia RS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 6.8 seconds, making the new-generation saloon with manual six-speed transmission 0.4 seconds faster than the previous generation. With its 248 km/h top speed, the new model outruns the second-generation Octavia RS by 6 km/h. Despite significantly improved performance, the new petrol engine with manual transmission is 17 percent or 1.3 l/100 km more economical than its predecessor. This new Octavia RS only uses a combined 6.2 l/100 km. CO2 emissions have dropped by 33 g to 142 g/km.

The 2.0 TDI/135 kW (184 hp) diesel engine also delivers maximum performance and boasts low consumption. The Å koda Octavia RS diesel engine accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 232 km/h. The saloon with manual six-speed transmission averages a combined 4.6 l/100 km and emits 119 g CO2 per kilometre - a 19 percent improvement.

Standard sports suspension, progressive steering and XDS differential lock

On the new Å koda Octavia RS, sports chassis is standard equipment. Furthermore, the clearance is 15 mm lower than in the standard Octavia. The MacPherson front axle with lower triangular wishbone suspension provides precise front tracking. The rear axle uses a newly developed multi-link suspension.

Standard features also include the electronic XDS differential lock, which is part of the ESC electronic stabilisation programme. It improves wheel traction and reduces the risk of understeering in fast cornering. Thanks to XDS, the vehicle's cornering behaviour has become more sporty, faster and more precise.

The new progressive steering provides the third-generation Å koda Octavia RS with better handling and agility. Thanks to this technology, the driver can use smaller steering inputs to achieve a desired curve radius. This means less changes of steering wheel grip are necessary in tight turns. A progressive gear ratio enables this new steering mechanism.

Sporty design: well-bred and classy
The new Å koda Octavia RS conveys pure emotion at first sight. Whether as a saloon or as an estate: The Octavia RS has athletic genes but keeps bragging to a minimum.

The attractive front view is a combination of a characteristic grille, striking air inlets with a honeycomb structure, a new apron and fog lights in RS design as well as new, now standard bi-xenon headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights. The RS plaque in the grille is the seal of this sportiness.

Seen from the side, the body is lower compared with the standard Octavia. Furthermore, the new model has grown in length and width in comparison with the second-generation Octavia. The new Octavia RS is longer (saloon plus 88 mm, estate plus 86 mm) and 45 mm wider than its predecessor. At the same time, the wheel base increased by 102 mm. Both this and a shortened front overhang underscore the vehicle's powerful appearance. Standard red brake callipers, powerful proportions, a high tornado line and sharp, precise edges create passion.

The Å koda Octavia RS's new alloy wheels provide a very sporty touch. The designers created a total of four classy 17", 18", and 19" bi-colour RS wheel designs that are visually striking, optically light with sharp edges and precise craftsmanship down to the last detail. The standard Octavia RS comes with silver 17" Dorado alloy wheels and 225/45 size tyres. Customers have a choice between the Gemini and Pictoris 18" alloy wheels, both of which are suitable for 225/40 tyres. The Gemini wheels are available in two colours: silver and anthracite. Customers preferring extremely sporty rims can choose the 19" Xtrem aluminium alloy rim in black, available through Å koda Accessories.

Both on the saloon and the estate, a strong, black diffuser element and the wide reflector above it dominate the rear of the Octavia RS. Both elements are distinctive characteristics of the new Å koda Octavia RS, as are the wide, trapezoidal chrome tailpipes. LED tail lights in the typical Å koda C-shape are now standard equipment. On the saloon, the spoiler sits on the tailgate, while on the Skoda Octavia Combi RS, it is attached to the roof edge.

Sporty black is the dominant colour in the interior of the Å koda Octavia RS. The ambient door handle light on the inside of the front doors is a new feature. For the front seats, customers can choose newly designed RS sport seats in fabric and leather or in full leather, embellished with red or grey contrast stitching. And a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather is now one of the standard features. Both the gearshift knob and the handbrake handle are covered in leather as well. Door sill plates and pedals are stainless steel. The instrument cluster with a colour Maxi DOT display reflect the exclusive RS design. Steering wheel, gearshift, door sill plates, seats, and floor mats display the RS emblem.

Plenty of room, many Simply Clever solutions
In addition to being sporty, both the saloon and the estate versions of the new Å koda Octavia RS are equipped with all of the outstanding features that distinguish the new Octavia. This includes plenty of room and numerous Simply Clever solutions - all in the quality you expect from Å koda.

The Å koda Octavia RS beats the competition when it comes to interior space: No other compact sports car offers more than this model's 1,782 mm interior length, more legroom (73 mm) and more headroom in the rear (980 mm). The boot also sets a class record: The RS saloon's boot volume grew by 5 litres to 590 litres in comparison to its predecessor. With a total of 610 litres, the Skoda Octavia Combi RS offers even more volume.

In addition, the new Octavia RS is equipped with a number of Simply Clever features. Depending on the trim level, the following features are standard or optional with the Octavia RS saloon and Octavia Combi RS. The foldable cargo element for the boot makes it easy to secure items to the boot floor. For the first time in the Octavia RS, the boot is equipped with double-sided floor mat. The dirt-repellent side is ideal for storing items like dirty hiking shoes or wet ski boots. The ice scraper is easily accessible in the fuel filler flap, and reflective vests are easily stored in a rack under the driver's seat. The door storage space includes a waste container. A multimedia clip secures an iPod, mobile phone or other device. Other storage spaces, racks and hooks provide smart options for tidiness in the interior and in the boot of the new Octavia RS, with the extra big sized sunglass compartment in the front part of the roof being just one example. Other features include a misfuel prevention and, in the saloon, a boot cover that is easily stored behind the rear backrest.

The new Å koda Octavia Combi RS comes with an optional variable boot floor. Using the movable false boot floor, the boot can be divided into a variety of heights and areas, thus providing flexible transportation options. The coat storage underneath the Combi's boot cover is a newly added space. It provides room for items that otherwise would be scattered inside the boot. The roll-up load cover can be stored underneath the variable boot floor. This space also accommodates the roof rack when not in use. The rear seatbacks are split 60:40 and can be folded down from the boot. An optional net divider keeps items from flying forward. The net can be used even when the rear seatbacks are folded down.

Top-level safety
The new Å koda Octavia RS offers a high level of safety. Some of the newly developed, active safety systems include the Front Assistant with emergency braking, Lane Assistant, the multi-collision brake with automatic braking action in an accident, Crew Protect Assistant to protect the vehicle in accidents, and the Driver Activity Assistant. These systems help avoid accidents or minimise the effects of an accident on passengers and other road users.

In case of an accident, a comprehensive package of passive safety systems maximises the protection of the driver and passengers. Up to nine airbags work in synch with 3-point seatbelts to protect driver and passengers from injuries. For the first time, the Å koda Octavia RS provides knee airbags (standard in EU countries) and optional rear side airbags. Furthermore, the newest Å koda model's precise sports suspension, the long wheel base, and the rigid, lightweight body contribute to its highly stable handling characteristics.

Innovative comfort systems
Thanks to numerous electronic comfort systems, there is hardly anything left to be desired in terms of comfort. The new Å koda Octavia RS can be fitted with an Adaptive Cruise Assistant, which adjusts the distance to the vehicle ahead. The new Intelligent Light Assistant can be set to automatically switch the full beam on or off, thus improving comfort and safety on the road. The Automatic Parking Assistant helps guide parking manoeuvres, both for parallel and vertical parking. The traffic sign recognition is part of the Traveller Assistant package and displays traffic signs.

One of the new Å koda Octavia RS's optional features is the Keyless-Entry-Start-and-Exit-System (KESSY). A power panoramic tilting sunroof is also available.

Seat Mii, 2013

  •  Seat Mii, 2013

The design - Mediterranean modernity with clear character
Characteristic and unmistakable - the Mii is clearly recognisable as a member of the SEAT family. Its front end carries forward the typical arrow visual, while its profile is distinguished by powerful wheel arches and slender roof pillars.

The rear end shows a new form of light design with triangular lamp units. The perfect proportions are a key element and comprise a width of 1.64 metres, a long wheelbase of 2.42 metres and exceptionally short overhangs front and rear. The steep rear end facilitates the Mii's excellent spaciousness - optimal functionality is particularly important in the super-compact segment.

'The Mii breathes the very spirit of its remarkable hometown, Barcelona,' says Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, the new Head of SEAT Design.

'It is modern, it has a strong personality, but it isn't loud. The Mii has the feel of a modern yet timeless product design. Every detail is precisely defined, but with not a line too many. With the Mii, we are making sporty chic and design quality attainable for all.'

Modern clarity and compelling functionality are defining aspects of the interior, too. The perfect ergonomics of the instruments and the control elements fit beautifully with the premium surfaces that can be individualised using coloured trim from the various equipment lines. Its seats are also new - with integrated head restraints they offer sports car flair, while being very comfortable and well-suited to long-distance driving.

The SEAT Mii doesn't stop at the city boundaries. Its spaciousness, excellent comfort levels and sporty dynamics - a direct result of its low weight - also make the Mii a compelling companion over longer distances.
SEAT Mii city car is the perfect vehicle for today's urban lifestyle. Quite simply, the SEAT Mii makes life easier - with compelling practicality, exceptional driving fun, high efficiency and innovative technology.

The Mii combines SEAT's sporty Mediterranean design with the very best craftsmanship and enormous scope for personalisation. Moreover, the outstanding value-for-money and low maintenance costs make the joy of driving a SEAT Mii easily attainable.

Spain, SEAT's home market, will begin sales of the Mii before the end of 2011, with the rest of Europe following in Spring 2012.

At a length of 3.55 metres, the SEAT Mii is the perfect size for modern-day urban use. The Mii comes to market at the end of 2011 as a three-door; the five-door version follows in 2012.

The new SEAT will be offered with all-new 1.0-litre petrol engines of 60 PS and 75 PS outputs. Combined with the vehicle's low weight of 854 kg these guarantee nimble agility and exemplary efficiency. The Mii Ecomotive has a CO2 figure of just 97 g/km.

The SEAT Mii is also a leader when it comes to innovative technology. The City Safety Assist for instance, adds an extra dimension of safety in the city, while the SEAT Portable System brings together entertainment, navigation, phone and vehicle functions in an entirely new way.

Perfect for the city, and longer journeys
Even though the SEAT Mii fits neatly into almost every parking space, its optimum use of space means it still offers plenty of space for four people. With a volume of 251 litres, the Mii offers the largest luggage compartment in its class. With the rear seat back folded, this increases to as much as 951 litres.

Safety - the SEAT Mii monitors the road and brakes for itself
A unique innovation in this class of vehicle is the SEAT Mii's City Safety Assist. In the event of danger the Mii warns its driver, or even brakes automatically. A laser sensor recognises other vehicles in front, whether they are driving or stationary. The system warns the driver when there is the imminent threat of an accident at speeds of less than 18 mph (30 km/h). If he does not react, the Mii brakes automatically. In many situations this is sufficient to avoid an accident altogether but will, at the very least, mitigate its consequences. ESP is also available, and is always combined with City Safety Assist when specified.

Systematic lightweight design means that the base weight of the SEAT Mii is only 854 kg. Its bodyshell is a piece of high technology formed largely from high-strength and, in places, form-hardened steels. Thanks to exceptional stiffness, it delivers a high-quality feel and excellent passive safety. The side airbags are standard equipment and are particularly large for optimum protection of head and upper body.

Drive - sporty agility with low fuel consumption
Beneath the short bonnet of the Mii is a completely new generation of engines. The three-cylinder petrol powerplant with a one-litre displacement is very light, compact and smooth-running. With two outputs of 60 PS or 75 PS, it ensures agility and compelling dynamics both in the city and on the open road.

Top speeds stand at 99 mph (160 km/h) and 106 mph (171 km/h) respectively, while fuel consumption on the combined cycle is measured at 4.5 and 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres. With a generous 35-litre tank volume, it offers considerable range between fill-ups and long-lasting driving fun.

2 Ecomotive versions of the Mii. Thanks to a start/stop system, brake energy recuperation and further consumption-lowering initiatives, they make do with just 4.2 litres of fuel per 100 km, which equates to a CO2 figure of just 97 g/km.

In Continental Europe the little SEAT will also be offered with CNG engineering. This lowers CO2 emissions to just 86 g/km, making the SEAT Mii one of the cleanest cars in the world.

As an alternative to a manual transmission, the Mii is also available with an automated manual box that boasts two electric motors to help manage the smooth gear change.

Infotainment - unique technology to boost efficient driving
SEAT is a young brand and the unique new SEAT Portable System is, of course, part of that. This innovative technology includes a five-inch screen - it is removable for mobile use and yet perfectly integrated into the vehicle electronics. Its many functions include a state-of-the-art navigation system, hands-free phone system with voice control and an on-board computer. The device can be combined with the integrated radio and speaker system.

The unique features of the SEAT Portable System include an 'Eco-trainer' function. Gearshift display, engine speed recommendations, average values and consumption profile all help the SEAT Mii owner to drive particularly economically. Plus, the SEAT Portable System is fully integrated into the vehicle electronics. It can be kept up-to-date via internet downloads, while tailor-made apps will offer additional functions in the future.

Equipment - sporty chic
Offered in its home market with three equipment lines, two Style Packs and a wide array of optional equipment and accessories, the Mii can be adapted perfectly to suit individual lifestyles and preferences.

Even the base model has all the key elements for safety and urban driving fun such as ABS, an adjustable steering column, side airbags and Isofix points with Top Tether. Reference and Style are the names of the two other equipment lines in Spain, with Style offering features such as power windows and central locking.

Prefer more chic or more sporting character in your SEAT Mii? The two equipment packages Chic and Sport offer the choice, with special colour and trim elements for interior personalisation. Alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel are always part of the package - the chrome package in the Chic version adds a special touch, while the Sport version offers tinted windows and a sporty suspension set-up for an even more dynamic feel.
