Land Rover Range Rover Hybrid, 2015

  •  Land Rover Range Rover Hybrid, 2015

The latest generation Range Rover models have all been designed with the integration of a hybrid system in mind. Consequently, the liquid cooled battery pack is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle in a protective boron-steel cradle without impacting on the cabin or luggage space. The Range Rover Hybrid has the same five-seat capacity and luggage space as the standard vehicle and retains the full-size spare wheel. This no-compromise philosophy is echoed in the Range Rover Sport Hybrid whose interior is unchanged from the standard model, right down to the 5+2 seating.

The 'Silk Trail 2013' 16,000km expedition visits 12 countries and takes in some of the world's most challenging roads, passes and trails, including part of the ancient, 4,000 mile Silk Road connecting Asia with the Mediterranean. These are the first hybrids to ever attempt this challenging route.
Land Rover is launching its first-ever hybrid models - the Range Rover Hybrid and Range Rover Sport Hybrid - which will deliver outstanding fuel economy, significantly lower CO2 emissions and retain Land Rover's renowned capability and performance.

Available to order in Europe from September 10, 2013 with first deliveries in early 2014, the two all-aluminium models are based on Land Rover's Premium Lightweight Architecture and share an identical powertrain. They are the world's first premium diesel SUV hybrids.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the new hybrids, three Range Rover Hybrids will embark on an epic trip, from the home of the Range Rover brand in Solihull to the home of the parent company Tata, in Mumbai, India.

The new Range Rover Hybrid powertrain features three driver-selectable modes and combines Land Rover's popular 3-litre SDV6 diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor integrated with the 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The hybrid system, including lithium ion battery pack, inverter and electric motor weighs less than 120kg.

The electric motor produces 170Nm torque to boost acceleration and drives the vehicle in EV Mode. The motor also acts as a generator, harvesting kinetic energy through regenerative braking, charging the battery when the vehicle is slowing. In driver-selectable EV mode the Range Rover Hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 30mph (48km/h) for a range of up to one mile (1.6km) before the diesel engine seamlessly restarts.

The output of the diesel engine and electric motor is 340PS at 4,000rpm and a class-leading 700Nm torque between 1,500-3,000rpm, resulting in stunning SDV8-style performance. Both models accelerate to 62mph (100km/h) in under seven seconds, deliver strong transient and mid-range performance with a top speed of 135mph (218km/h), combined with a 26 percent reduction in CO2 emissions to 169g/km, equivalent to 44.1mpg on the combined cycle.

Both hybrid Range Rover models continue to deliver a class-leading breadth of capability and versatility, enhanced by the exceptionally linear torque delivery from the powertrain and retaining Land Rover's peerless four-wheel drive system including Terrain Response® 2, with uncompromised wading and ground clearance.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse, 2014

  •  Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse, 2014

Respresenting Italian racing
The Gallardo Squadra Corse's ultimate racing performance is also reflected in its exterior design - clearly attesting its commitment to its Italian heritage. A decal strip along the flanks displays green, white and red, the colors of the Italian flag. The Squadra Corse is available in Giallo Midas (yellow), Bianco Monocerus (white), Grigio Thalasso (grey) and Rosso Mars (red). The exterior look of the Gallardo Squadra Corse is perfectly accented with a matte black finish on the large rear wing, which contrasts with the body paint work. The hood, front air intakes, rear diffuser and 19-inch forged wheels are painted in high-gloss black, while the brake callipers are available in red, black or yellow.

The name Squadra Corse refers to the recently-founded department within Automobili Lamborghini, which manages all motorsport activities from GT3 to the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo championships in Europe, Asia and America, where gentlemen drivers participate in fiercly contested battles on the most challenging racetracks in the world.

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse was presented for the first time at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Squadra Corse delivers high levels of performance while bringing the thrills associated with motorsport to the street-legal world. This new and most extreme model in the Gallardo line-up is based on the Gallardo Super Trofeo, the race car that features in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo - the world's fastest one-make series. The Squadra Corse will be a limited production model, priced at € 191.100, plus tax.

The new Gallardo Squadra Corse is derived directly from the race car. Both share the same V10 engine, which is used in the racing version with no modifications. Likewise, the Squadra Corse has the same rear wing for greater aerodynamic load - achieving, under the best aerodynamic conditions, three times the load of the Gallardo LP 560-4 - for increased dynamic stability during tight high-speed cornering. Another element taken directly from the racing version is the removable engine hood equipped with a quick-release system. Both the rear wing and the hood are made from carbon composite material, as are a host of other components on the Squadra Corse.

Lightweight construction through consistent use of carbon fiber
Together with aluminum, carbon fiber forms the basis for construction of the new, extremely lightweight, top-of-the-range Gallardo.

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse boasts a dry weight of 1340 kilograms, 70 less than the already lean Gallardo LP 560-4, which gives the Squadra Corse a stunning power-to-weight ratio of 2.35 kilograms per hp. Different delivering breathtaking performance, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.4 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in just 10.4 seconds. Its forward thrust finally tops out at 320 km/h. The production-standard carbon-ceramic brake system guarantees unmatched stopping power.

The technology and the powertrain
Like the Super Trofeo competition version, the new Squadra Corse is based on the technical underpinnings of the Gallardo Superleggera. The V10 engine generates 570 hp, the equivalent of 419 kW, which is fully available at 8,000 rpm. The V10's unique firing order delivers the striking sound heard from its motor racing equivalent. Like the race car, the Gallardo Squadra Corse comes as standard with the robotized e-gear six-speed transmission operated by steering wheel paddles. This electronically controlled system shifts through its six gears smoothly and much faster than any professional racing driver could. Every kilometer driven in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse is packed with sheer excitement, in part due to its unrelenting grip in virtually all situations thanks to its all-wheel drive concept.

The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo is the only single-brand racing series in the world that features all-wheel drive race cars. The Gallardo Squadra Corse is a highly concentrated driving machine that offers an unrivaled driving experience with breathtaking cornering speeds and fast, immediate response.

Minimalist sporty interior
Extremely lightweight carbon fiber and Alcantara®, the perfect combination of sporty minimalism, are the dominant materials inside the Squadra Corse. Alcantara graces the underside of the dashboard, the central panel of the seat cushion and the backrest. The door panels, the racing seats and the center console cover are made from carbon fiber, a technology in which Lamborghini has achieved world-leading expertise. Carbon is also used for the handbrake frame; the middle of the center console; the lower rim of the steering wheel; the trim around the main and secondary instrument panels; the door handles; and the handle for opening the glove box. Standard seats can also be ordered in place of racing bucket seats.

Squadra Corse offers a new series of driving events
"Esperienza" events by the Squadra Corse deparment provide enthusiasts and prospects with the opportunity of a first test-drive and a glimpse inside the world of Lamborghini. The Lamborghini Academies provide, on both track and ice, driver training and the initial steps toward real-life racing. The Super Trofeo series offers the perfect first race experience for young and gentlemen drivers, with the Lamborghini GT3 for more seasoned racers wishing to compete in the Lamborghini marque worldwide.

Kia Ceed GT, 2013

  •  Kia Ceed GT, 2013

Fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, the front-wheel drive GT models can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 230 km/h. Thanks to maximum engine torque being developed from just 1,750 rpm, in-gear acceleration is highly responsive with 60-100 km/h in fourth gear in 5.4 seconds, 80-120 km/h in fifth gear in 7.3 seconds and 80-120 km/h in sixth gear in 8.8 seconds.

The all-new high-performance Kia pro_cee'd GT and cee'd GT are the brand's most performance-focused production cars ever. Both models feature a new turbocharged engine, unique exterior and interior design enhancements, and a suspension system that entertains the enthusiastic driver.

The two new GT models are powered by a new version of Kia's 1.6-litre GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine equipped with a twin-scroll turbocharger and strengthened internal components. Power and torque outputs are dramatically increased (compared with the non-turbo engine), with maximum power up 51% to 204 ps, and torque up 61% to 265 Nm.

Distinctive design
Designed in Europe under the direction of President and Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, both GT models feature new front grille and lamp clusters, deeper bumpers, jewel-like four-point LED daytime running lights, new fog lights, dual-exhaust pipes, larger 18-inch alloy wheels, eye-catching red brake calipers and a range of special paint finishes.

The GT models inside are equipped with Recaro sports seats, alloy pedals, bespoke surface materials and a seven-inch, racing-car inspired TFT instrument cluster to create an engaging, performance-oriented ambience for the driver and passengers. For the first time on a Kia, the instrument cluster can be customised by the driver with a choice of two layouts - 'analogue' mode, showing a traditional speedometer and trip information, and 'GT' mode, which shows the vehicle's speed in large, yellow figures and gauges displaying engine torque and turbo-boost.

Handling perfected on road and track
The GT powertrain and chassis were originally engineered in Korea and then developed during extensive road and track testing in Europe. With ride and handling fine-tuned for European roads, the test programme included 160,000 km on German autobahns at an average speed of 150 km/h.

The GT models also undertook 480 laps of the 21 km Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit for durability testing. The Kia pro_cee'd GT and cee'd GT share the same unique 7-Year, 150,000 km warranty as the rest of the Kia model line-up in and are the only performance vehicles in the world with such comprehensive cover for motorists.

Subsequent developments to the suspension system ensure that the high performance credentials of the GT models are matched by exceptional dynamic characteristics, while retaining the outstanding ride quality of the pro_cee'd and cee'd. This means both cars reward the enthusiastic driver while also being well suited for everyday driving.

Across both models, front damper stiffness has been increased by 30% in rebound and 10% in compression, while at the rear the increases are 50% in rebound and 200% in compression. Spring rates have also been stiffened by 10% at the front and rear, the rear anti-roll bar has increased in thickness from 18 mm to 19 mm, and the front suspension benefits from stiffer bushings. These changes allowed Kia engineers to reduce understeer and body roll in order to improve the cars' handling characteristics.

Subtle re-tuning of the ABS system, together with the fitting of wider 225/40 R18 Michelin tyres, also make the Kia pro_cee'd GT and cee'd GT the fastest stopping variants of the popular cee'd range, braking from 100-to-0 km/h in 36.4 metres.

The engine sound has also been addressed by Kia engineers, with intake and exhaust systems specifically tuned to give GT models a sportier engine and exhaust note. Under hard acceleration between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm, a sportier exhaust tone has been increased by 10dB over the base model, achieved by improving the flow of air through the main muffler and reducing the air intake path.

Adding to the cee'd family line-up
The new pro_cee'd GT and cee'd GT are built on the same production lines at Kia's Zilina facility as the regular five-door cee'd and three-door pro_cee'd, the latter first launched at the 2012 Paris International Motor Show as the third member of the second generation Kia cee'd family.

Sharing many key attributes with the regular models upon which they are based, both the Kia pro_cee'd GT and cee'd GT have an overall length (4310 mm), width (1780 mm) and wheelbase (2650 mm) which are also the same as standard models. For the pro_cee'd and pro_cee'd GT, the roofline is lowered by 40 mm, the B-pillar is moved back by 220 mm, the side panels behind the B-pillar are new, as are the side windows, C-pillar, tailgate, rear light clusters and rear bumper.

Jeep Grand Cherokee EU-Version, 2014

  •  Jeep Grand Cherokee EU-Version, 2014

Legendary Jeep capability comes courtesy of three four-wheel drive systems - Quadra-Trac II, Quadra-Drive II and SRT-exclusive Quadra-Trac -, the Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension and the Selec-Terrain and Selec-Track traction management systems.

The new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the most advanced safety features, including updated Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation and all-new Selec-Speed Control: both complement the vehicle's already rich array of standard active and passive safety system.

The new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be introduced across European markets starting in July 2014 and will be available in the Laredo, Limited, Overland and SRT trim levels as well as with a more exclusive Summit top of the range model.

More than two decades ago, Jeep reinvented the premium Sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment and set a new standard within the category. Today, after nearly 5 million sales worldwide, the most awarded Large SUV ever continues to evolve and features a new exterior and interior design, new advanced technological contents and enhanced on-road and off-road manners thanks to its all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. Fitted as standard across the entire lineup, the new gearbox significantly reduces consumption and emissions while improving acceleration and securing smoother and faster gear shifting.

New exterior and interior design features characterize each single trim level of the 2014 lineup in a unique way and include new bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights (DRLs), a new design for the wheels and new interior/exterior color combinations.

New, handcrafted interiors deliver now even more refinement to the Jeep flagship thanks to the use of premium materials such as Natura Plus leather and high-quality wood. The introduction of a new three-spoke steering wheel add to the exclusive character of the cabin.

New contents are also offered in terms of infotainment, offering the new UConnect with 8.4-inch touchscreen and satellite navigation and the all-new for the brand 7" TFT customer configurable cluster display. Exclusive feature of both the top-of-the-range Summit model and the high-performance Grand Cherokee SRT model is a state-of-the-art nineteen-speaker, 825-watt Harman Kardon surround sound audio system.

DESIGN
For 2014, the Jeep Grand Cherokee receives an updated style: all trim levels have been given a more premium look and are readily recognisable at a glance. On all models, the signature seven-slot grille is shorter in height, the headlights are slimmer and the lower front fascia has been slightly elevated while the fog lights have been raised and are more pronounced. All together, these changes give the front end of the Grand Cherokee a more elegant, sportier appearance while still preserving Jeep's signature features.

The main design enhancement for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee are the new high-intensity discharge bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights (DRL), offered as standard on all trim levels. The Summit and SRT models feature adaptive HID bi-xenon headlamps with LED lighting.

The rear of the new Grand Cherokee has also received changes and boasts new, larger tail lamps with LED lighting, a larger and more aerodynamic rear spoiler, new bumpers and a re-sculpted tailgate that offers greater visibility. Lower rear fascias are now model-specific, and dual exhaust tips are now standard on Limited, Overland and Summit models.

A new design of the wheels and new interior/exterior color combinations complete the main exterior styling news found on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and further enhance its image of quality.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo exteriors are identified by body-color side mirrors and door handles. The grille receives a chrome headlight treatment while the rear fascia features the new signature tail lamp design. Laredo also rides on standard five-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels painted Satin Chrome.

Grand Cherokee Limited models add to the Laredo look bright door handles and a chrome trimmed dual exhaust outlet. An all-new chrome trim outlines also the lower front fascia opening and the rear bumper.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland features several body-color design cues including the lower fascia trim on the front and rear of the vehicle. The body-color trim carries over to the wheel arches and wheels surround. The lower rocker panels also receive a body color treatment. Overland models boast polished 20-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels with Mineral Gray painted pockets.

The new Grand Cherokee Summit model tops the range and receives many unique styling cues. The bi-xenon HID signature headlamps are adaptive, and swivel in conjunction with the steering wheel. This improves visibility around bends and turns and enhances safety on board Grand Cherokee. Between the lamps is a chrome finish on the upper grille's mesh pattern. The entire lower fascia is unique and features a pronounced chrome trim similar in design to the one on the Grand Cherokee SRT model. The front bumper is larger and features a slimmer opening for the projector fog lamps compared with other models. Body-color wheel arch moldings are also larger in comparison to other models and a Dark Gray lower rocker trim panel with a chrome strip runs along the top edge of the rocker. This chrome accent helps to visually lengthen the side view of the new Grand Cherokee. The rear fascia is dominated by dual rectangular exhaust outlets and Dark Gray lower body cladding. These features are unique to Summit models. Satin Clear Coat 20-inch aluminum wheels are a unique-to-Summit twin five-spoke design.

In line with its sporty character, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT model features a black, seven-slot front grille. Also the adaptive, bi-xenon headlamps feature a unique black background to distinguish SRT from other 2014 Grand Cherokee models. This black treatment contributes to further highlight the unique SRT aggressive appearance.

The SRT's front treatment is mirrored in the back for a cohesive styling appearance: here the tail lamps with signature LED lighting offer a black surround to further emphasize the SRT's performance heritage. Also new for 2014 is a more aerodynamically efficient rear spoiler integrated into the all-new, one-touch liftgate adorned with new SRT badge. Rather than relying on a manual lever, the liftgate is operated electronically with the push of a button.

Exclusive to SRT are standard 20-inch Black Vapor Chrome aluminum wheels with five-spoke design.

Aggressive 20-inch five-spoke bright polished Goliath aluminum wheels are available as optional only on the SRT trim level.

Jeep Grand Cherokee open-air options

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee features the CommandView dual-pane power sunroof that extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle, allowing for perfect views both on- and off-road. CommandView is comprised of two glass panels with the front panel opening rearward providing a glass surface that is twice more extensive than the one offered by any traditional roof. The rear panel, which is fixed, allows light and open viewing for second-row passengers. The system comes standard with a power sun shade for those who may not want direct sunlight. CommandView is standard on Overland, Summit and SRT models and is available on Limited models.

Interiors
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee interiors are enhanced thanks to the use of high quality materials and model-specific color combinations. The center stack has been revised and features a new UConnect 8.4" touchscreen. Controls for radio and climate are found below the screen and have knobs and buttons which are easy to identify and to use. The centre console reveals a new leather-wrapped electronic shifter for the eight-speed transmission. Another new feature of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the new three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel featuring sections of fine wood on Overland and Summit models. Optimised in terms of driving position, it features buttons for managing radio, cruise control, telephone and voice commands in complete safety. All trim levels come with paddle shifters mounted on the back of the steering wheel as standard.

Designers took inspiration from legendary locations and terrains from around the world when creating the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee's interior. Each Grand Cherokee model has its own unique style of luxury and ambiance based on specific materials and color patterns.

2014 Grand Cherokee interiors were inspired by the cultures and environments of Morocco, New Zealand, Nepal, Grand Canyon and by the Italian Mount Vesuvio.

Available on the entire model lineup, the Morocco interiors feature Black monotone seats, instrument panel, consoles and door panels. A Black wood trim finish adorns the dash and doors of the Laredo and Limited models.

The New Zealand interior is a two-tone Black and Light Frost. Nador Brown Walnut interior wood trim finish adorns the instrument panel and door panels and eases the contrast between the two-tone upper and lower interior. The aluminium door handle and dash vent bezels, like the trim on the centre console, feature a slight gold hue. Premium cloth seating is standard on Laredo, while heated, leather seating is standard on Limited.

Standard equipment of the Overland model includes a contrasting stitched-leather instrument panel and seats. Open-pore wood is one of the prominent design cues found on the dash and doors of Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland models, and adds a distinct touch of modern luxury. Wood trim is also found on the top portion of the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Beside the Morocco interior, the Overland model offers Vesuvio and Nepal interiors featuring two all-new color schemes: Jeep Brown and Indigo Blue - inspired by the blue-hued dark gray walls of Mount Vesuvius - for the former; Jeep Brown and Light Frost for the latter - paying tribute to the geographic diversity found in the Asian country of Nepal. Open-pore brown Zebrano or Black wood is found on the instrument panel and door panels of both interior choices.

The now more exclusive Grand Cherokee Summit is the new top-of-the-range model and offers the highest level of quality. Premium Natura-Plus leather seating are featured in Summit and are available in Black or Jeep Brown with copper accents on door handle and dash vent bezels. Copper leather stitching adorns the leather-covered instrument panel, seats, doors and center armrest and are unique features of the Grand Canyon interior, exclusive to the Summit model. A further exclusive feature found on the Summit is a suede-like material covering the A-pillars and headliner.

The 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT model offers an exclusive Laguna leather interior available in two distinctive colors: Torque (black) and all-new Sepia combination.

SRT's refined cabin features race-inspired technology and exclusive appointments including true carbon fiber trim accents adorning instrument panel, driver's and front passenger's doors and the redesigned, SRT-exclusive heated three-spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom that features a bevy of comfort, convenience and connectivity controls and more pronounced, more ergonomically efficient paddle shifters. An all-new Launch Control button is situated behind the new T-handle shifter on the center console: standard on the SRT models, this functionality delivers enhanced and consistent acceleration performance.

The most significant interior enhancement on the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT is the new Uconnect with 8.4-inch touchscreen display featuring SRT-exclusive Performance Pages, a distinctive functionality specific to racing technology. Performance Pages shows the drivers instant feedback on steering input measurements, horsepower, torque, 0-100 km/h time, 100-0 km/h braking distance and much more.

ENGINEERING
The new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee features a choice of 4x4 systems: Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD) and the exclusive-to-SRT, Quadra-Trac active on-demand four-wheel-drive system, also featuring rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD).

The standard-on-Overland and Summit models Quadra-Lift air suspension system allows the ride height of the Grand Cherokee to change up to a maximum ground clearance of 28 cm.

Thanks to the availability of these systems, the 2014 Grand Cherokee delivers legendary Jeep capabilities and the safety of the four-wheel drive when travelling on poor grip on-road surfaces.

Quadra-Trac II full-time four-wheel drive system features a two-speed transfer case that implements BTCS (Brake Traction Control System) on the front and rear axle for best-in-class off-road performance. Its two-speed transfer case uses the inputs coming from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and takes the corrective action. The system also uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of the available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction. The system operates in two ranges: in the 4WD High, torque is automatically directed to the front and rear axle in a variable rate; when switching to the 4WD Low, using the console-mounted switch, the system splits the torque with a 50/50 ratio between the front and rear axles. With a 2.72 gear reduction ratio, the 4WD Low provides the unsurpassed tractive performances that are necessary in extreme off-road conditions.

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and Summit models are fitted with Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive system. With a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD), Quadra-Drive II delivers industry-leading tractive capability and off-road performances. The core of the system is the central transfer case and an electronically controlled clutch pack for active torque distribution. On dry pavement and in normal tractive conditions, the central transfer case splits 48 percent of the available torque on the front axle and 52 percent on the rear one. In case of slippery surfaces, the system automatically redirects engine torque between the front and rear axles based upon real-time driving conditions, providing the vehicle with responsive tractive performance. The system also uses electronic controls that multiply traction on the four wheels and avoids losses of grip in case of sudden acceleration. The system includes the 4WD High and 4WD Low ranges. The 4WD Low has a 2.72 gear reduction ratio for extreme off-road conditions.

Thanks to the rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (ELSD), Quadra-Drive II instantly detects rear tires slip and smoothly distributes torque across the axle. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT features standard Quadra-Trac active on-demand four-wheel-drive transfer case. This 4x4 system uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip and take the corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, the system can transfer up to 100 percent of available torque to one rear wheel with better grip. The transfer case also enhances handling by proportioning torque between the front and rear axles to maintain the driver's intended path.

The new Grand Cherokee SRT also features Brake Traction Control System (BTCS) on the front differential and a rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD). ELSD contributes to eliminate rear wheel slip and distributes torque to the wheel with grip, improving the vehicle's handling.

Quadra-Lift air suspension
Enhanced on-road dynamics and benchmark off-road capability deliver to the driver optimum ride performances both when driving on the road as well as when mastering off-road trails. To achieve this result, Jeep Grand Cherokee uses an array of sophisticated systems including Quadra-Lift air suspension, Selec-Terrain traction control and new Selec-Speed Control.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and Summit models features standard Quadra-Lift air suspension that allows the ride height to be adjusted by the driver manually using the console controls. Ground clearance can be adjusted to five levels and reaches a maximum span of 28 cm.

Normal Ride Height (NRH): This is the standard ride position. A clearance of 22 cm offers improved fuel efficiency and maximum comfort during on-road driving.
Off Road 1: This setting lifts the vehicle an additional 3.3 cm from NRH to reach a ground clearance of 25.4 cm, for clearing off-road obstacles.
Off Road 2: This setting ensures legendary Jeep off-road capability by adding an extra 6.6 cm to NRH and reaching the highest ground clearance of 28 cm.
Park Mode: This setting lowers the vehicle by 4 cm from NRH for easy per ingress/egress and loading. NRH and Park Mode can be selected by the driver to control ride height.
Aero Mode: This setting lowers the vehicle by 1.3 cm from NRH. Aero Mode is controlled by vehicle speed and perfectly adjusts the aerodynamics for optimal performance and fuel economy.

In Eco Mode, the vehicle is lowered to Aero Mode level to further enhance the Jeep Grand Cherokee's aerodynamics and secure optimum fuel efficiency.

Quadra-Lift air suspension adds up to 10.4 cm of lift supported by four-corner air springs for premium ride comfort.

With the front air dam removed and the Quadra-Lift air suspension, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee features a 35.8-degree approach angle, a 29.6-degree departure angle and a 23.5-degree breakover angle.

Selec-Terrain traction control system
The class-leading Selec-Terrain traction management system with five different driving programs has been refined on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Standard on all Grand Cherokee models except SRT, this sophisticated system has been enhanced through the introduction of the new Selec-Speed Control, in combination with the Off road package. New Selec-Speed Control allows the driver to control the speed of the vehicle, both uphill and downhill, using the steering wheel paddle shifters instead of requiring the use of the accelerator or brake pedals.

In addition, the Sport Mode - found on the Selec-Terrain controller of the 2013 models - is now engaged via the shift lever to provide improved on-road 'fun-to-drive' capability.

Standard on Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit, Selec-Terrain traction control system allows the driver to choose the most suitable driving mode to safely tackle any surface.

Through the use of algorithms that enable unsurpassed control and capability, Selec-Terrain electronically coordinates and optimizes up to 12 systems on any terrain providing enhanced vehicle control including: drivetrain control module, electronic brake controller, electronic stability control (ESC), transmission controller, powertrain controller, Hill-ascent and Hill-Descent Control and the new Selec-Speed Control.

Thanks to Selec-Terrain, the driver can choose between five different driving programs to achieve the best driving experience on all terrains:
  •     Sand: Traction Control and Quadra-Lift operate to prevent tyre slip on sand. Torque is tuned for optimal performance.
  •     Mud: Traction Control and Quadra-Lift operate to prevent tyre slip and torque is tuned for optimal performance in mud.
  •     Auto: The system automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation.
  •     Snow: Traction is adjusted for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads.
  •     Rock: Quadra-Lift suspensions (where fitted) reach the maximum height of 28 cm. In this mode, the transfer case, differentials and accelerator coordinate to provide maximum low-speed control.

PERFORMANCE
The F-Type showcases the new supercharged Jaguar engines, a 3-liter supercharged V6 in 340hp and 380hp states of tune and the 5-liter supercharged V8 in the Jaguar F-Type V8 S with 495hp and 460 ft-lbs of torque. All are equipped with the new Intelligent Stop/Start system to enhance fuel economy under certain driving conditions.

The 340hp version of the supercharged V6, which debuted in the 2013 XJ and XF sedans, produces 332 ft-lbs of torque at 3,500-5,500 rpm. The 380hp version, exclusive to the F-Type, produces 339 ft-lbs of torque at 3,500-5,500 rpm. The V8 produces an even broader torque curve, with 460 ft-lbs produced over the 2,500-5,500 rpm range.

The 340hp V6 model can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds). The 380hp S model lowers that to 4.8 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds), and the V8 S can hit 60 mph from rest in just 4.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds). Electronically limited maximum track speeds are 161 mph (260 km/h), 171 mph (275 km/h) and 186 mph (300 km/h), respectively, for the V6, V6 S and V8 S models.

In addition to rapid zero-to-60 acceleration, the new Jaguar supercharged engines give the F-Type outstanding merging and passing performance. The 340hp V6 model will go from 50 to 75 mph in just 3.3 seconds; the 380hp S version in 3.1 and the V8 S model in 2.5 seconds.

Based on the Jaguar 5-liter V8 engine, the 3-liter V6 shares its all-alloy construction. The lightweight die-cast aluminum block is stiffened with cross-bolted main bearing caps, increasing rigidity and refinement. A system of counter-rotating front and rear balancer weights help give the new supercharged V6 the smoothness and refinement characteristics of the V8 on which it is based.

The supercharged V6 and V8 engines combine high compression, direct fuel injection, dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT) and a supercharger to deliver their high levels of performance and efficiency. A twin vortex supercharger is mounted in the engine's "V", and a water-cooled intercooler reduces the temperature of the intake air to optimize power and efficiency. The supercharged V6 uses a higher compression ratio than the V8, 10.5:1 vs. 9.5:1.

In both the V6 and V8, the aluminum cylinder heads package an innovative valve control system. The dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT) system is activated by the positive and negative torques generated by the movement of the intake and exhaust valves, allowing exceptionally quick actuation rates of more than 150 degrees per second throughout the rev range.

Spray-guided direct injection delivers precisely measured quantities of fuel directly into the center of the combustion chambers at pressures of up to 150bar (2175 psi) , creating a more homogenous air-fuel mixture for cleaner and more efficient combustion. This is aided by spark plugs that are precisely indexed both in relation to the injector and within the combustion chamber.

The new Jaguar F-Type represents a return to the company's heart: a two-seat, convertible sports car focused on performance, agility and driver involvement. The F-Type is a continuation of a sporting bloodline that stretches back more than 75 years and encompasses some of the most beautiful, thrilling and desirable sports cars ever built. Joining the XK convertible and coupe models, the new F-Type provides Jaguar with a broader line of sports and GT models.

The 2014 Jaguar F-Type combines low vehicle weight (starting at 3,521 pounds), high power (340hp, 380hp and 495hp versions) and superb aerodynamics to achieve a pure sports car experience, yet with Jaguar elegance and luxury.

A true two-seat sports car, the all-new Jaguar F-Type is equipped with a modern, lightweight soft top that, when lowered, serves as its own tonneau cover. This not only provides a weight savings, but also improves packaging and contributes to the car's low center of gravity for greater agility. The top can be fully raised or lowered in just 12 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph. Its multi-layer construction includes a Thinsulate® lining for optimal thermal and sound-insulating properties.

EXTERIOR DESIGN
Jaguar cars have always defined sinuous, muscular elegance, and the F-Type continues - and advances - this tradition with new, assertive design language. Two "heartlines" define, in just two bold strokes, both the profile and top-down view of the Jaguar F-Type. The main "heartline" theme begins in the blade dissecting the shark-like gills on either side of the grille. This first heartline runs up and forms the sharp top crease of the fender line, which provides sight lines that aid the driver in cornering maneuvers. It leads the eye along the top of the front fender, which is emphasized by the headlamp design, and then into the door and toward the rear of the car where it gracefully disappears.

This sweeping line is mirrored by the feature line that runs back from the side vent. Along with "lightcatcher" surface detailing above the sill, the line instills a sense of speed to the car. The lightcatcher surface detailing also allows the door surface to wrap around the side of the car, creating a fuselage effect.

The second "heartline" swells out to form the muscular rear haunch before sweeping dramatically around the rear of the car. The clean, sleek lines of the tail are made possible in part by the inclusion of an active rear spoiler that deploys at speed to reduce aerodynamic lift. The spoiler rises when the F-Type reaches 60 mph and then lowers to fit flush when the speed drops below 40 mph. Further discreet aerodynamic aids include a front splitter and a sculpted rear valance.

The headlights run vertically rather than horizontally, which leads the eye naturally up and along the fender crease. Technology has facilitated the design language of the Jaguar F-Type; the compact xenon unit requires just one projector, while the J-Blade LED running lights further emphasize the design of the heartline running through the lamp.

The grille leans slightly forward to create a suggestion of motion when the car is stationary. The lower edge of the clamshell hood forms the top of the side vent. The mesh in the grille and side vents is a hexagonal design that gives greater form and depth.

The hidden, automatically deploying door handles support the design purity. The handles remain flush with the door panel until activated by either unlocking the car with the key fob or touching a touch-sensitive area of the handle. Their automatic deployment provides a mechanical "handshake," inviting the driver and passenger to enter. Once the car is moving, the handles retract to leave an uninterrupted aerodynamic surface.

Full LED rear lamps create a new Jaguar sports car signature by reinterpreting classic cues from the past. By wrapping the lights around to the trailing edge of the rear wheel arch, the car's powerful rear-wheel drive stance is emphasized. Reflecting the way the front grille leans forward, the tail tucks inward, reinforcing the impression that the car is poised to leap forward.

Differing exhaust and tailpipe designs distinguish the V6 and V8 variants of the F-Type. The V6 models feature twin center outlets in a nod to the classic Jaguar E-Type introduced in 1961. The boldest exhaust finishers ever fitted to a Jaguar, these are stamped from a single piece of stainless steel, creating an unbroken gleaming surface. The V8 S model exclusively features four outboard-mounted exhaust outlets, with twin outlets on each side.

Further detail differentiation between the three variants is found in the exterior trim. The Jaguar F-Type V6 model is marked by satin black trim elements in the grilles, vents, front splitter and rear valance, while the two 'S' models receive gloss-black finishes in these areas. The V6 model features standard 18-inch alloy wheels, with 19-inch and 20-inch wheels standard for the S and V8 S, respectively, and available as options for the V6. The V8 S also receives additional aerodynamic features, including front vanes beneath the shark gills and flat side sill extensions to manage airflow.

ALUMINUM STRUCTURE
Jaguar, which has innovated the use of aluminum body structures, built the new Jaguar F-Type around its most advanced rigid and lightweight aluminum architecture to date. Jaguar engineers applied more than a decade's worth of aluminum construction experience to achieve the twin goals for the F-Type of low mass and an extremely rigid body.

Key to this was the further development of alloy technology. AC300, a 6000-series aluminum alloy, was specifically selected for parts of the Jaguar F-Type to meet these goals. The F-Type structure is riveted and bonded, and this manufacturing process emits up to 80-percent less CO2 compared to that from welding a comparable steel structure.

In addition to the structural alloy, Jaguar further developed an AC600 aluminum panel alloy in order to deliver the desired design language. This AC600 alloy offers robustness and quality of finish but with a great degree of formability. The effects can be seen in the clarity and tightness of radii and feature lines. It was the radius tightness of just 8mm that allowed the engineers to reproduce the car's "heartlines" exactly as the designers had intended.

Aluminum construction, including all-aluminum double wishbone front and rear suspensions, helps endow the F-Type with an ideal balance, which enhances the agility demanded of a pure sports car. The new structural alloys used in the F-Type construction results in high rigidity. Using detailed Computer Aided Engineering programs, Jaguar achieved lateral stiffness gains of up to 30 percent in key areas, such as the front suspension mounting points, compared to other Jaguar models. This rigidity provides a precision foundation for a finely tuned suspension system to deliver a superb driver connectivity and fidelity of response.

Significantly, the beautiful clamshell hood, an exotic signature feature of the Jaguar F-Type and where the front heartline begins, is a one-piece stamping, made using a 1,000-ton press. Jaguar developed other new manufacturing techniques in order to deliver both the design and structural integrity engineered into the F-Type. A new process, known as "warm forming", is used to produce the inner door stamping. The ordinary stamping process with cold metal could not achieve the desired shape. Jaguar engineers developed a method in which the metal is heated to 500°F (260°C) before pressing. As a result, the desired shape and structure are achieved from one large pressing rather than numerous smaller ones, reducing complexity and weight.

The F-Type employs more composite materials than in any previous Jaguar, with structures under the sill and the trunk lid constructed from high-strength polymers. Extensive analysis throughout the car's structure, powertrain, body and convertible roof contributed to the overall vehicle weight of about 3,521 pounds (1,597 kg). Concentrating as much of the mass as possible within the wheelbase by minimizing the front and rear overhangs also contributes to the car's agility and stability.

Aluminum forms a great part of the commitment Jaguar has made to sustainability. More than half the content of the car comes from recycled or reclaimed metal. In addition, Jaguar is rolling out its closed-loop recycling system to its suppliers, ensuring all waste metal from the manufacturing process is reused.

Intelligent Stop/Start
The new Intelligent Stop/Start system offers fuel economy benefits under certain urban driving conditions. Stop/Start uses a twin solenoid starter, enabling the system to restart the engine quickly as the driver's foot to move from the brake pedal to the accelerator. There is also a strategy for engine stop-start "change of mind" scenarios. This will bring the engine back up to speed even during its run-down phase if, for instance, the car is coming to a halt at an intersection when the driver sees an opportunity to join the traffic flow. As the engine is shutting down, but before it has completely stopped, it can rapidly restart by injecting fuel into the cylinders.

Active Exhaust
Standard for the V6 S and V8 S models and optional for the V6, an Active Exhaust system enhances the exhaust note. Electronically controlled bypass valves in the rear section of the exhaust open under hard acceleration, effectively providing a free-flowing straight-through arrangement. At cruising speeds, the valves will close, retaining a powerful exhaust note with comfortable sound levels.

Eight-speed 'Quickshift' Automatic Transmission
With eight closely spaced ratios in the Quickshift automatic transmission, the Jaguar F-Type driver can select a gear which will keep the engine within its optimal power band. The transmission was specifically tuned by Jaguar for the F-Type to prioritize acceleration. The V6 S model has a slightly lower (higher numerical) final drive ratio, 3.31:1 vs. 3.15:1 than the standard V6 model.

The entire drivetrain of the F-Type - up to and including tire contact patches - is tuned for optimal response to allow for ultra-fast transient torque delivery, which provides the driver with a high degree of responsive feedback. Importantly, once the transmission has shifted into second gear, a locking clutch bypasses the torque convertor, creating a direct mechanical link between the engine and the rear wheels. The Quickshift system enhances the sense of connectivity by ensuring sharp, immediate shifting performance via rapid and precisely timed engine torque intervention.

The operating parameters of the transmission are determined by the adaptive shift strategy that has 25 different programs available to it, depending on driving style and road conditions. The transmission can detect the manner in which the car is being driven by monitoring acceleration and braking, cornering forces, throttle and brake pedal activity, road load, kick-down request and even whether the car is being driven up or down hill. On detecting a more spirited driving style, the transmission will automatically make the shifts more aggressive and move the shift points higher.

In order to maintain the car's balance during a downshift, the transmission will instruct the engine management system to automatically blip the throttle to match engine revs. This function also allows the transmission to perform multiple and very rapid downshifts during hard braking. Corner Recognition senses when the F-Type is negotiating a curve, the transmission holding its ratio to ensure the correct gear for the exit. The transmission will also recognize when the car is performing a series of overtaking maneuvers requiring rapid changes in throttle position. Rather than upshift, the transmission will hold a lower gear to remain ready for the next demand for acceleration.

Manual override of the transmission is available to the driver at any time, using either the steering wheel-mounted paddles or the console-mounted selector. Moving the shift selector to the left gate accesses manual mode, in which the driver pulls the lever rearward for an upshift and pushes forward for a downshift. If Dynamic Mode is also selected on the Jaguar Drive Controller, the transmission will not automatically shift up at the engine's redline and will only downshift to prevent engine stalling, leaving control fully in the hands of the driver.

A Configurable Dynamics option is another first for a Jaguar. This allows the driver to select which elements of the Dynamic Mode are wanted so, for instance, the steering weight and throttle response can be sharpened while allowing the ride on models with Adaptive Dynamics to remain unchanged. Configurable Dynamics also adds functionality to the central touchscreen aimed at track use of the car. The system allows drivers to record lap and split times and will provide information on throttle and brake inputs and even G-forces generated.

Bodystyle Mix: Best of Coupe, Crossover and Hatch

The shape of the Infiniti Q30 Concept deliberately challenges categorisation - not a coupe, not a hatch and not a crossover - to appeal to younger customers who are less likely to follow tradition and actually desire to disrupt convention to create their own unique experiences.

The design concept reflects that, by the end of this decade, Gen X and Gen Y will represent 80 per cent of buyers in the premium segment, bringing new, more contemporary expectations for premiumness.

Infiniti is confident its concept's fusion of the dynamic design and sportiness of a coupe, the roominess of a hatch and the higher stance of a crossover will resonate with these customers. Q30 Concept is immediately differentiated from traditional mass-market premium vehicles.

Its uplifted shape resonates with younger premium customers, who tend to be more urban, by providing a higher visual perspective in heavy traffic and in parking maneuvers.

Infiniti Q30 Concept's sensual design connects spontaneously to forge a strong emotional bond with a new wave of consumers less likely to conform to traditional fashion dictats and not willing to be defined by their vehicle's body type.
The Infiniti Q30 Concept debuted at the 2013 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, signalling the next step in an aggressive strategy to extend the Infiniti brand into new premium segments. The global compact premium segment is forecast for significant growth with the entry of younger affluent customers.

Sculptural, stretched, dynamic
From the sculpted fluidity of its contours and dynamic, stretched silhouette to the artistry, ambition and authenticity of its interior, Q30 Concept represents a coherent design vision.

The Infiniti Q30 Concept design language creates a unique place for Infiniti, reflecting the brand's intent to deliver outstanding product substance in terms of design, materials, fit and finish, craftsmanship and performance.

Bold sections and intersecting lines of its body side play with light and shadow. Its muscular body surfaces evoke lithe and graceful cats, such as the cheetah's movements of floating grace.

Evolving Infiniti Design Language
Just as younger premium customers want freedom to disrupt convention, Infiniti designers are stretching out to challenge - even to provoke - the design conventions of the premium car segment with new, more contemporary ideas.

Infiniti Q30 Concept represents the latest evolution of the Infiniti design philosophy introduced with the Infiniti Q50. Yet Infiniti designers had the freedom to explore bolder, even more sensual sculpting, enhanced muscularity and playfulness, reflecting Infiniti's approach as the seductive alternative to traditional premium automobile brands.

Infiniti Q30 Concept also incorporates dramatic design cues from visionary Infiniti concept vehicles - Essence, Etherea and Emerg-e - in a realistic vision of what a future production compact premium car in the Infiniti lineup could be.

Building on Infiniti's reputation for precision, the Q30 Concept envisions a finely crafted body shape reflecting engineering quality in terms of body shut lines, consistently tight panel gaps and torsional rigidity.

Infiniti Performance Imagery
The enhanced muscularity and athleticism of the Infiniti Q30 Concept - with its sleek profile and wheels-at-the-corners stance - offers the visual promise of engaging performance and dynamics.

Infiniti's forthcoming compact premium entry will be the first Infiniti model Sebastian Vettel, Infiniti's Director of Performance, will influence from its inception.

The three-time Formula One world champion from Infiniti Red Bull Racing has engaged with Infiniti's technical teams around the world as part of Infiniti's commitment to infuse its brand with a performance pedigree.

Bespoke Interior Introduces Dissymmetry
The bespoke feel of the interior design envisions Infiniti's ambition of interior design and quality leading the premium segment.

Q30 Concept signals Infiniti's intent to achieve that goal by charting its own design path as a premium brand exemplified by its interior design, with its warm, inviting and emotionally engaging experience for the vehicle occupants, eschewing the more clinical approach found in other premium brands.

Designers achieved this through pursuing greater artistic freedom to create highly sculptural shapes, featuring a unique execution of Infiniti's "dual wave" effect and pursuing the notion of dissymmetry.

Dissymmetry, an unconventional approach, orients design features - from air vents and armrests to the instrument clusters - for more sculpted visual appeal. The technique creates an interior design for Q30 Concept markedly in contrast to any found in premium car products from traditional market leaders.

Insight about younger and younger-minded premium customers inspired the Infiniti Q30 Concept design team.

The overall effect is enhanced by the harmonious contrast of materials in the cabin. The initial impression is a black-and-white theme, but closer examination reveals a richer feel characterised by creme leathers and a slight bronze effect adding warmth to blacks, creating sumptuous warmth.

As younger premium customers have embraced furniture design, fashion and clothing, Q30 Concept's interior conveys an understated expression of personality for its target customer. The careful choices of colors, materials, contrasts and accents express thoughtful coordination.
Design for the Future
Infiniti Q30 Concept is the design precursor for Infiniti's future compact premium entry. Infiniti has previously announced plans to produce a compact model in Sunderland, United Kingdom, starting in 2015.

As envisioned by the Q30 Concept, Infiniti has a clear strategy to grow in key global markets, particularly China and Europe, and expand its offering in established markets such as the United States.

The Infiniti Q30 Concept's design appeal and compact footprint represent Infiniti's philosophy of how to extend its brand to a more urban customer base, such as that found in many Asian markets, as well as Europe.

Infiniti expects compact premium products to become a significant facet of its offering in the years ahead. Infiniti's portfolio is expected to broaden, from covering about 60 per cent of the premium sector today to beyond 85 per cent in the future.

Authentic Materials
Reflecting Infiniti's philosophy that premium character begins with genuine materials, the Infiniti Q30 Concept makes creative use of ceramic, leather and metallurgical artistry in the vehicle interior:
Sculpted ceramic, integrated in the upper front seatbacks, is used to house speakers for the audio system not only due to its design appeal but its special audiophile properties.
Metalwork throughout the interior features genuine metal crafted with a high degree of finishing art. Metal surfaces, in the centre console, door panels, seats, vent bezels and controls, feature contrasting matte and gloss finishes.
Leather features bespoke-tailoring with the selective use of Infiniti-signature violet stitching, particularly the instrument panel and seats.
The Q30 Concept exterior incorporates genuine carbon fibre - inspired by the Infiniti Red Bull Racing RB9 Formula One Car - in the grille and the lower sill on the body sides. Subtle use of Infiniti violet highlighting on selected surfaces of these carbon fibre elements adds another Infiniti design cue, communicates lightweight performance character and contributes an edgy attitude.

The inner spokes of Infiniti Q30 Concept's 20-inch wheels also feature violet accents graduated in intensity from inner to outer. This graduated approach can be found elsewhere in the vehicle, particularly the precise melding of contrasting materials in the seats.

Honda CR-V, 2013

  •  Honda CR-V, 2013

The third-generation CR-V marked the first CR-V in 2007 to feature a vertically opening tailgate, a feature made possible by removing the spare wheel from the back door. Lower in height, shorter in length and wider than its predecessors, it offered improved on-road dynamics. A mid-life facelift in 2009 introduced the new generation i-DTEC diesel engine and saw a diesel engine combined with an automatic transmission for the first time in the CR-V.

Originally launched at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show, the Honda CR-V was one of the first of the modern generation of 'soft roaders'. It became a benchmark for this fast growing segment with its practical size and excellent utility. The CR-V was designed primarily for on-road use, but with SUV styling and the quality customers expect from a Honda product. Sales began in Europe in 1997 and the CR-V quickly became a firm favourite with buyers. Production of European specification CR-Vs started at Honda's plant in Swindon, United Kingdom in 2000.

Launched in late 2001, the second generation CR-V took many cues from the original, retaining all of its best features including the rugged 4x4 styling and the 'on demand' Real Time Dual Pump 4WD system. It offered improved performance and economy, achieved through the introduction of Honda's 2.0-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, while the new body structure delivered increased interior space.

A further sales boost came in 2005 with the introduction of Honda's much acclaimed i-CTDi diesel engine. Perfectly complementing the petrol engine, the high output, high torque engine significantly enhanced the CR-V's all-round appeal.

Over five million CR-Vs have been sold across the world since its introduction in 1995 and the new, fourth generation builds on the success of its predecessors with even greater quality, practicality and refinement. The model that helped define the compact-SUV sector has been comprehensively redesigned for the European market.

For the first time in Europe, the new CR-V will be offered with a choice of both two- and four-wheel drive, while improvements to both the petrol and diesel engines have resulted in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

EXTERIOR DESIGN
The pursuit of the perfect balance between a car and an SUV influenced every element of the development process, including the exterior styling.

Exterior Designer Manabu Konaka explains: "The Honda CR-V has always been a car for every occasion. It can be both casual and formal, but the aesthetic must always convey solidity and reliability."

The length and height of the car have been reduced by 5 mm and 30 mm respectively compared with the current model, without reducing the interior space.

While the fourth generation model is instantly recognisable as a member of the CR-V family, it still manages to assert its own identity. The new model takes on a more aggressive and aerodynamic stance with deeper sculpting of the bodylines and a bolder nose section. The front bumper's smooth, flowing lines are joined by a horizontal three-bar grille and deep-set headlights. The lower front bumper is designed to convey SUV capability with a generous approach angle. The signature vertical rear brake lights, which have featured on every generation of Honda CR-V, remain but the fourth generation introduces a more three-dimensional style. The CR-V's large wheels and bold wheelarches further emphasise its dynamic presence and capability.

The CR-V has been designed as a global car but the European model features a number of exterior refinements developed specifically for this market. A revised front bumper emphasises its dynamic appeal, while front LED daytime running lights and rear LED lights are other stylish additions.

The position of the windscreen has been brought forward by 60 mm (measured from bottom of the windscreen) relative to the overall length of the car. As a result, the size of the engine compartment has been reduced.

"At Honda, every project leader pursues our man-maximum, machine-minimum philosophy," says Nakagawa. "It is always our goal to reduce the size of the mechanical parts in order to provide more space for the occupants. It is a big challenge for our engineering and production teams, but one that we must take on."

The repositioning of the windscreen and the new bonnet design have provided a second benefit: the area of the nose of the car that cannot be seen from the driver's seat has been reduced to improve visibility and make the CR-V easier to manoeuvre.

A 10 mm increase in both the steering wheel and seat height adjustments has also ensured that a broader range of drivers can achieve an ideal driving position.

The synergy between form and function has played a critical role in the development of every generation of the Honda CR-V and this latest model is no exception. The expansive glass area of the windows reveals the spaciousness of the cabin.

With the rear seats folded flat, the boot capacity of the CR-V has grown by 147 litres to 1648 litres. If the space-saver spare wheel is specified, the volume increases to 1669 litres with the seats folded up, or 589 litres with the seats in place. The load length has been increased by 140 mm to 1570 mm, while the height of the load lip has been reduced by 25 mm to make it easier to load heavy or awkward items. The boot of the CR-V can now accommodate two mountain bikes or four sets of golf clubs.

A keyless entry system and power tailgate (unique to the European specification CR-V) provide enhanced practicality.

INTERIOR DESIGN - QUALITY AND FUNCTIONALITY
The interior design concept for the new Honda CR-V continues the man-maximum, machine-minimum philosophy. "The first thing that we wanted to achieve with the interior design was a feeling of openness," says the Interior Designer, Takehiro Ishibashi. "I wanted to communicate the feeling you get when you stand on top of a mountain, looking down on the valley and seeing a panorama of the landscape. It's a feeling of freedom, space and timelessness."

The influence of this thinking can be seen in the fascia design. "There are a number of horizontal layers which help emphasise the feeling of space," says Nakagawa. "We call this 'lean-layered' design. By arranging the major functions in a series of layers, you create an ergonomically-efficient environment that is very intuitive." The major controls have been further grouped according to their function, with a 'driver interface zone' behind the steering wheel and an 'information interface zone' in the centre of the cabin.

The materials used within the new CR-V have been carefully chosen for the European market. "The high quality finish on the top of the fascia was inspired by the marble-like pattern you find on Japanese Kobe beef," says Ishibashi. "On the decorative strip that flows across the fascia we used a special film that creates a 3D effect. I am really proud of our attention to detail in every aspect of this vehicle."

Care has also been taken to achieve a significant reduction in the engine and road noise entering the cabin. Sound insulation material has been applied to the floorpan below the passenger compartment, while sound absorption material has been fitted to the rear door, rear wheelarches, door frames, front bulkhead and bonnet. The doors also now feature a double seal. The net result is a 3dB reduction in cabin noise compared to the current CR-V.

The high quality ambience is further enhanced by an impressive range of equipment. In the cabin attention focuses on the 5in "intelligent" Multi-Information Display (i-MID), which controls the audio, telephone and navigation systems (where fitted). Also fitted as standard are Honda's acclaimed ECON mode which helps to minimise fuel consumption and Eco Assist system which advises drivers on how their driving style is impacting on fuel economy (see Efficiency).

In order to emphasise the feeling of space inside, the door casings have been sculpted to create a concave shape. This has also allowed the occupants of the front seats to be moved closer to the sides of the car, making it easier to step in and out. As a consequence, more space has been liberated between the seats for a centre console that houses three cupholders, a storage compartment, an armrest and air vents for the rear seats.

The hip point of the rear passenger seats has been lowered by 38 mm compared to the current model, resulting in a more comfortable seating position and increased headroom. A change in the design of the rear seats has also allowed Honda's engineers to introduce easy fold-down 60/40 Split Rear Seats, which can be folded flat in one movement. At the pull of a handle, the CR-V can be transformed from a five-seater passenger car into a versatile load-lugger. "This is a feature of which I am particularly proud," says Ishibashi. "It will make a big difference to how our customers use their CR-V."

EFFICIENCY
The CR-V has always been one of the most efficient SUVs on the market and Honda's engineers have worked tirelessly to hone every aspect of the fourth generation model. Improved aerodynamics and sophisticated electronics combine to achieve significant reductions in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

AERODYNAMICS
As with so many elements of the new CR-V, form and function go hand in hand in the aerodynamics of the car. The adoption of a flat under floor and sculptured wheelarches have smoothed the air flow under the car, while a longer roof combined with aerodynamically optimised front bumper and rear spoiler help to manage the air-flow over the body. The result is a reduction in the drag coefficient of 6.5% compared with the current CR-V benefitting performance, fuel economy and reducing exhaust emissions.

ENGINES
Under the bonnet of the Honda CR-V, customers will find either a 2.0-litre i-VTEC petrol engine or a 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engine.

Both are developments of the engines found in the third generation CR-V but both have been comprehensively redesigned with a focus on reducing CO2 emissions. "We have placed a key emphasis on applying new technologies to reduce the friction in the engines and improve their efficiency," explains Nakagawa. Idle-stop technology has also been introduced on all models fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox. Improvements in fuel economy and a reduction of CO2 emissions in the new CR-V have been achieved without compromising driving pleasure.

i-DTEC DIESEL ENGINE
The power and torque outputs of the i-DTEC engine remain at 150PS and 350 Nm respectively, but the CO2 emissions have fallen from 171 g/km to 149 g/km (12%) for the manual version, and from 195 g/km to 174 g/km for models equipped with the five-speed automatic transmission.

The i-DTEC engine is all-aluminium, transversely mounted, with 4-cylinders, DOHC, four valves per cylinder, a variable nozzle turbocharger, piezoelectric injection and a second order balancer shaft. A continuously variable swirl control valve, located in the intake manifold, provides fine control of the swirl ratio, to give the ideal combustion environment within the cylinders at all times. This helps to reduce noise levels ( through reduced knocking) and produce smoother performance. A standard particulate filter (DPF) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation technology contribute to a reduction in NOx levels and further improvements in efficiency.

i-VTEC PETROL ENGINE
The power output of the 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine has risen from 150PS to 155PS. Despite this increase in performance, CO2 emissions have fallen from 192 g/km to 173 g/km for the manual version, and from 195 g/km to 175 g/km for the automatic.

Customers opting for the two-wheel drive version (only available with a petrol engine) will see a further reduction in emissions to 168 g/km. The introduction of a front-wheel drive CR-V responds to changing market conditions. Across Europe, two-wheel drive models now account for 51% of the petrol-engined compact-SUV market according to a survey conducted in 2011.

The Honda CR-V's petrol engine uses Honda's long-established VTEC system, which is able to adjust the lift and opening duration of the valves. The system is complemented by Variable Timing Control (VTC), which monitors the engine load and controls the phasing of the inlet camshaft. These work together to produce a remarkably broad and smooth power band. Based on input from a position sensor located at the rear end of the inlet camshaft, the engine's ECU varies the inlet camshaft position relative to that of the exhaust camshaft. In this way it can advance and retard the opening of the inlet valves.

During acceleration, VTC is set at a relatively small degree of valve overlap to provide the optimal output, the valve opening angle using the inertia of the intake air. In addition, as engine speed builds, the VTEC mechanism switches from the low speed cam to the high speed cam, but with the same degree of overlap.

At high engine speeds, there is much greater valve overlap, which reduces pumping losses, maximises exhaust gas recirculation, and provides the best balance between fuel consumption and power output.

ECON MODE
The new CR-V is equipped with an ECON button as part of the Eco Assist™ system. When activated, ECON mode alters the mapping of the drive-by-wire throttle system to ensure a smooth increase in torque for a more relaxing drive and greater fuel efficiency on the 2.0 litre i-VTEC models only. In addition, it alters the operation of the cruise control on the 2.0 litre i-VTEC models and the air conditioning systems, allowing for slightly increased variances with the set speed or the set temperature in order to conserve fuel whenever possible. For all models, the air conditioning controls the compressor and decreases the voltage of the fan drive to reduce the load on the engine, improving fuel efficiency.

ECO ASSIST
When Honda developed the 2nd Generation Insight hybrid, the engineers discovered that different driving styles could create as much as a 15 per cent variance in fuel economy.

In response to this they developed ECO Assist, which helps drivers optimise their driving efficiency. It uses the car's speedometer to advise drivers how their driving style is impacting fuel economy. If the car is being driven economically, the dashboard glows green. If the driver slightly exceeds the best level of throttle control, the dashboard will glow white/green. Finally, it will glow white during heavy acceleration and deceleration. A variation (different colours and/or different parts of the dashboard would light up) of this system was implemented on subsequent hybrid models (CR-Z and Jazz) as well as onto the current Civic. The system helps driver's improve their efficiency.

IDLE STOP
Idle Stop technology is standard on all new CR-V models with a manual transmission and this seamless system can contribute up to a 5 g/km of CO2 saving for the diesel engine. When the driver reaches a standstill and selects neutral, the engine will automatically stop when they release the clutch. It automatically restarts when they depress the clutch to select a gear. A display on the dashboard indicates the operation of Idle Stop and the system can be disabled using a button on the fascia.

RIDE COMFORT AND HANDLING
The new CR-V marks the introduction (in Europe) of a two-wheel drive model as well as upgrades to the car's suspension, steering and four-wheel drive system. The new CR-V development team undertook an extensive test program on European roads, focusing on ride comfort and high speed stability.
