 BMW 5-Series Touring, 2014

The BMW 5-Series Sedan currently rolling off the assembly line is the sixth-generation model. An impressively harmonious balance between sporting flair and elegance has been a defining feature of the four-door variant since it first made the leap from the drawing board to the road and went on to become the most popular executive car in one market after the next. Entering the fray in 1991 and now in its fourth generation, the BMW 5-Series Touring blends hallmark BMW dynamics and all-embracing comfort with a variable-usage cargo area designed to meet the requirements of a wide range of activities. And the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, unveiled in 2009, has seen BMW introduce drivers to an all-new type of car. Its extravagant design represents the expression of sports performance, luxurious long-distance comfort and versatility.

Global market leader: BMW 5-Series defends its leading position in the world's car markets
To date, over 6.6 million BMW 5-Series cars have left the factory. And the current BMW 5-Series is in excellent shape to surpass the record set by the highly successful last two generations, each of which sold in excess of 1.4 million units. A total of more than one million units of the current BMW 5-Series Sedan have been delivered to customers since the sales launch of the 5-Series in March 2010. No other generation has bettered these sales figures over such a short period of time.

The BMW 5-Series defended its leading position as the best-selling car in its class in supreme style once again last year, further extending its upward curve of constantly rising sales figures since its market launch.

Soaking up acclaim around the world: BMW 5-Series earns top ratings, wins design awards, heads readers' surveys
The quality and popularity of the BMW 5-Series are reflected in the host of prizes and distinctions awarded to the members of the model family around the world. In early 2013 the BMW 5-Series secured class victory - for the third year in succession - in the readers' survey "The Best Cars" conducted by the German motoring magazine "auto, motor und sport". This success came not long after the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition with BMW BluePerformance technology had been voted "Car of the Future" and awarded the ADAC automobile association's "Yellow Angel". The BMW 5-Series as a whole had been named "Germany's favourite car" in the same competition in 2011.

In addition to the red dot award, iF Product Design Award and Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, the BMW 5-Series has also picked up a notable collection of international distinctions in recognition of its successful exterior design. Beyond these, the BMW 5-Series has been voted "Car of the Year", "Best Car", "Premium Car of the Year", "Family Car of the Year" and "Executive Car of the Year" in various countries.

This broad spread of qualities has been recognised with a swathe of impressive ratings elsewhere as well. German car journal "Auto Bild" crowned the BMW 525d Touring "Value Champion 2012" on account of its high value retention in the used car market. The title had been awarded to the BMW 520d Sedan the previous year. And the BMW 5-Series emerged from both the Euro NCAP and the US NCAP crash tests with the highest rating of five stars. It was also the first vehicle to achieve a 100 per cent score in the Safety Assist category of the Euro NCAP crash tests.

Design and body: Timeless elegance, cutting-edge functionality and made-to-measure luxury
Instantly captivating and enduringly compelling, the aesthetic qualities of the BMW 5-Series models have secured sales success around the globe and a wealth of awards and distinctions. "We haven't completely redesigned the BMW 5-Series, we've just given its character a slightly sharper sporting edge," says exterior designer Won Kyu Kang, describing the modifications made to the BMW 5-Series Sedan and BMW 5-Series Touring.

The BMW 5-Series Sedan and BMW 5-Series Touring: sporting contours for the front end, xenon headlights as standard

Sporting elegance is the standout characteristic of the BMW 5-Series Sedan and BMW 5-Series Touring. Their design is defined by the hallmark BMW proportions created by a long bonnet, long wheelbase, short overhangs and set-back passenger compartment. At the front end, additional contour lines for the BMW kidney grille surround and the restructured lower air intake accentuate the car's sporting appearance. All the variants of the new BMW 5-Series model family are fitted with xenon headlights as standard.

Joining the LED fog lamps on the options list are Adaptive LED Headlights. Here, both the dipped and main beams are generated by LED units positioned on horizontal ribs in the centre of the two light rings, which are levelled off at the bottom. Sweeping chrome inserts with engraved BMW lettering add the finishing touches to the distinctive and extremely high-class appearance of the Adaptive LED Headlights. The side indicators are now integrated into the exterior mirrors on all new BMW 5-Series models. And the Sedan and Touring have newly structured rear lights with particularly thin and strikingly contoured LED light strips. These lights and an additional crease in the rear apron emphasise the wide track of both models.

New BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo: powerful presence at the front, dynamic elegance at the rear

The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo combines signature BMW proportions with an innovative body concept. The elegantly stretched coupé roofline, four doors with frameless windows and a high-opening tailgate exude sporting intent, luxurious long-distance comfort and extensive variability. Carefully targeted modifications to the car's design shine an even brighter spotlight on its unmistakable character, which meets the highest standards across an extremely wide spectrum.

A new air intake highlights the powerful presence of the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo's front end. The tailgate, meanwhile, has been extended rearwards and gives the roofline's transition into the rear an even more harmonious appearance. All of which allows the car as a whole to cut a lower-slung and dynamically stretched figure. These sharpened contours have also had a positive effect on the boot capacity of the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, which has been increased by 60 litres to 500 litres.

Horizontally structured and three-dimensional surfaces play a defining role in the new look of the rear end. Vibrant light and shade effects around the licence plate mount, a dynamically sweeping crease extending into the flanks and a chrome trim strip in the rear apron give the tail end a lighter and sportier feel. This impression is reinforced by the new outline of the two-section rear lights. Their horizontal layout is accentuated internally by a light design distilled into two LED light strips.

Interior: each model variant offers its own take on long-distance comfort, variability and a luxurious ambience

New details inside all the cars in the new BMW 5-Series provide a refined premium impression and increased functionality. In all models the Control Display of the standard iDrive operating system is now bordered on both sides by high-quality chrome trim strips. And the storage compartments and cup holders in the centre console of the Sedan and Touring now have increased capacity.

Generous levels of space, exquisite materials and high-quality workmanship all contribute to the premium ambience characteristic of the BMW 5-Series model family, as do exclusive interior design details like the standard iDrive and the black-panel technology of the instrument cluster and automatic climate control system's display.

The iDrive Controller can be ordered as an option with a touch-sensitive surface allowing character recognition. For example, a destination can be programmed into the navigation system by spelling out the desired address using finger movements on the Controller's surface. The existing "Speller" in the Control Display can also be used to this end, and the driver can alternate freely between the two operating methods while entering a command.

Other option unique in this segment is the multifunction instrument display designed to enhance driving pleasure. This 10.25-inch TFT cockpit screen takes its cues from the Driving Experience Control mode selected. Varying graphics and colour schemes ensure clear differentiation. In COMFORT mode the instrument display depicts a classical combination of four circular instruments. A magnifying glass function highlights the car's current speed and revs. In ECO PRO mode the rev counter morphs into an EfficientDynamics display, which indicates how efficiently you are driving. In SPORT mode the speedometer shows the car's speed digitally in the form of a large central figure, while the gear currently engaged is displayed in the centre of the rev counter.

The new BMW 5-Series Sedan underlines its qualities as a mile-devouring car for business use or trips away with its high level of long-distance comfort for all passengers. What's more, its boot can hold 520 litres of cargo.

For those with further-reaching requirements when it comes to load capacity, the BMW 5-Series Touring will be the model of choice. An array of individual solutions lends the Touring a level of functionality and variability unmatched in its segment. Even when all the seats are in use it offers 560 litres of boot capacity, which can be expanded to as much as 1,670 litres as the occasion demands. The rear seat backrests split 40 : 20 : 40 as standard and can also be ordered with an adjustable tilt angle as an option. A pair of levers in the load compartment allows the folding-down process for the backrests to be initiated from the boot, and their approach into a horizontal position is now cushioned slightly to settle them into place. The load compartment cover is automatically lowered when the tailgate is closed. Plus, the tailgate of the BMW 5-Series Touring comes as standard with a Soft Close Automatic function and a rear window that can be opened separately from the tailgate itself, flipping up automatically at the touch of a button.

BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo: the perfect combination of luxurious long-distance comfort and versatility

The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo offers an unmatched blend of luxurious long-distance comfort and versatility, fusing the imposing elegance of a Sedan with the variable-usage interior of a Touring model and the versatility of a Sports Activity Vehicle. Its seating position - slightly raised to a height somewhere between that offered by a sedan and an SAV - allows particularly comfortable entry and exit. Rear passengers can enjoy legroom and headroom normally the preserve of luxury cars. The rear seats slide forward by 73 millimetres and the angle of their backrests can be adjusted through 33 degrees. When released from its locked position, the partition behind the rear seats follows the longitudinal movements of the seats, allowing boot capacity to grow from 500 to 650 litres. The partition and rear seat backrests can be split 40 : 20 : 40. Folding down all the elements and moving the rear seats all the way forward allows the Gran Turismo to reveal its maximum 1,750 litres of load capacity. To load items into the boot, one can either open the full, high-opening tailgate or a separate boot lid below the rear window. Similarly to a sedan, this smaller opening allows access to the load area without disturbing rear seat passengers.

Automatic tailgate operation comes as standard on the BMW 5-Series Touring and BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo and is also available as an option for the BMW 5-Series Sedan. The function of the optional Comfort Access system that allows the tailgate to be opened hands-free has been extended - for all members of the new BMW 5-Series model family - to include a closing mechanism, which means that a movement of the foot under the rear apron can now be used to prompt the tailgate to close as well as open. After unloading items from the boot, customers can therefore also close the tailgate without having to put down the items they're holding.

BMW 5-Series customers can choose from a wide selection of exterior paint colours. New additions to the range - and available for all models - are Calisto Grey metallic, Jatoba metallic, Mineral White metallic and Glacier Silver metallic. New variants have also been added to the line-up of optional light-alloy wheels.

Exclusively composed BMW Lines are now available for the first time to all members of the new BMW 5-Series model family as an alternative to standard specification. Customers can choose between the BMW Luxury Line and BMW Modern Line design packages, which shine the spotlight on selected facets of the car's character to great effect. Both Lines include LED fog lamps, 18-inch (BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo: 19-inch) light-alloy wheels, B-pillar trim and exterior mirror bases in high-gloss black, illuminated door pulls with chrome trim and likewise illuminated door sill strips with aluminium inserts bearing BMW lettering. Luxury / Modern badges can be found on the front side panels.

The BMW Luxury Line exudes a high level of elegance and exclusiveness thanks to a carefully assembled selection of further particularly high-class features for the exterior and interior. The chrome finish of the trim bars in the outer sections of the lower air intake, the fronts of the black kidney grille slats, the window recess finishers, the trim strip in the rear apron and the exhaust tailpipe embellishers all add gleaming touches. Leather upholstery with exclusive stitching, a black sports leather steering wheel and interior trim strips in exquisite Fineline anthracite wood create a particularly refined interior ambience.

The BMW Modern Line package displays a strikingly contemporary and dynamic edge. The air intake bars, kidney grille slats, rear trim strip and tailpipe embellishers come in matt chrome, and the instrument panel and sports leather steering wheel can be specified as an option in the light colour shade Oyster. Interior trim strips in dark Pearl and exclusive stitching for the optional leather upholstery ensure the interior creates an eye-catching impression.

Powertrain and chassis: The perfect balance of dynamics and comfort
The appeal of Sheer Driving Pleasure in a premium executive class car is set to grow even further in both strength and reach with the launch of the new BMW 5-Series model family. The host of optimised details included in all variants of the new BMW 5-Series have led to (in some cases significantly) reduced fuel consumption, but with no drop-off in sporting ability. Indeed, some models now actually offer improved performance. Added to which, all engine variants now meet the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust gas standard.

A new entry-level diesel variant, additional models equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive and an even more powerful yet also more efficient range-topping V8 power plant join the action, completing an engine line-up that now covers an output spectrum from 105 kW/143 hp to 330 kW/450 hp. The new BMW 5-Series Sedan and new BMW 5-Series Touring can be specified with a choice of four petrol and six diesel engines. Beyond this, the Sedan also comes in BMW ActiveHybrid 5 full-hybrid and BMW M5 high-performance guise. The engine line-up for the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo comprises two petrol units and three diesels.

The cutting-edge chassis technology underpinning all the models in the BMW 5-Series family delivers a balance of dynamic performance and ride comfort without precedent in this market segment, while the Electric Power Steering system comes with Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance as standard. The BMW 5-Series Touring and BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo are also fitted as standard with automatic self-levelling air suspension at the rear axle. Among the options available for all members of the BMW 5-Series family are the Integral Active Steering and Adaptive Drive systems, which no other model in this segment offers. Targeted enhancements of acoustic and suspension comfort in the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, meanwhile, lend even further emphasis to its role as the supreme long-distance specialist of the line-up. The Sedan and Touring have likewise made notable advances in these areas.

An efficient start: new entry-level diesel engine for the Sedan and Touring
BMW TwinPower Turbo technology ensures an exemplary balance of driving pleasure and fuel consumption across the engine range. In the new entry-level diesel engine, which powers the BMW 518d Sedan and BMW 518d Touring, this package of technology consists of a turbocharger with variable inlet geometry and common rail direct injection with solenoid valve injectors. The 2.0-litre engine develops a maximum output of 105 kW/143 hp, generates peak torque of 360 Newton metres (266 lb-ft) and accelerates the new BMW 518d Sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.6 seconds. The four-cylinder unit burns an average 4.5 - 4.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 62.8 - 57.7 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle (CO2 emissions: 119 - 129 grams per kilometre, depending on the gearbox and tyre format specified).

The selection of diesel power plants available for the Sedan and Touring includes two four-cylinder variants - fitted in the BMW 520d producing 135 kW/184 hp and the BMW 525d with 160 kW/218 hp - and three six-cylinder units. With average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres (62.8 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 119 grams per kilometre, the new BMW 520d matches the figures of the 520d EfficientDynamics Edition it replaces.

Further up the range, the BMW 530d develops 190 kW/258 hp and the BMW 535d produces 230 kW/313 hp. And rounding off the line-up are two M Performance cars: the BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and BMW M550d xDrive Touring. They also use a 3.0-litre straight-six engine deploying M TwinPower Turbo technology with three turbochargers to deliver unrivalled peak output of 280 kW/381 hp and maximum torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft). Three diesel engines are available for the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, powering the BMW 520d Gran Turismo, BMW 530d Gran Turismo and BMW 535d Gran Turismo.

Even more powerful, even more efficient: the V8 engine for the BMW 5-Series
The new generation of the V8 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the BMW 5-Series model family takes to the stage armed with a 10 per cent rise in output yet also significantly reduced fuel consumption. The eight-cylinder unit, found under the bonnet of the BMW 550i Sedan, BMW 550i Touring and BMW 550i Gran Turismo, now also combines its two twin-scroll turbochargers and High Precision Direct Injection with VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. The power plant generates 330 kW/450 hp and maximum torque of 650 Newton metres (479 lb-ft) from its 4.4-litre displacement. The new BMW 550i Sedan, for example, sweeps from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds. Its average fuel economy in the EU test cycle stands at 8.6 - 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres (32.9 - 32.1 mpg imp). CO2 emissions come in at 199 - 206 g/km, depending on the tyre format specified.

The Sedan and Touring variants of the BMW 520i, BMW 528i, BMW 535i, BMW 518d, BMW 520d and BMW 525d are fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Each of those models can also be specified as an option with the extremely fast and precise, not to mention extraordinarily efficient, eight-speed automatic transmission provided as standard for the BMW 550i, BMW 530d and 535d, as well as all variants of the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo. The eight-speed automatic now comes with a coasting function and can also be ordered with shift paddles on the steering wheel. Shift paddles are also included with the eight-speed sports automatic transmission, a standard feature of the BMW M550d xDrive, which stands out with its ultra-impressive shift dynamics.

Additional models with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive
The selection of engine variants that can be combined with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system has also been expanded. The BMW 520d xDrive Sedan and BMW 520d xDrive Touring are both new additions to the range, the electronically controlled distribution of drive between the front and rear axle giving them a noticeable increase in traction and directional stability, not to mention an even sharper dynamic edge through quickly taken corners.

All-wheel drive is also available as an option for the Sedan and Touring versions of the BMW 528i, BMW 535i, BMW 525d, BMW 530d and BMW 535d, and the BMW 550i Sedan. The M Performance cars channel the power from their six-cylinder diesel engines through all four wheels as standard. All the models in the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo line-up - with the exception of the BMW 520d - can be ordered with xDrive.

State-of-the-art chassis technology delivers dynamics and comfort to order
The fine-tuning carried out on the chassis for the new BMW 5-Series models makes for an even more assured conversion of engine power into dynamic performance and ride comfort. Both the double-wishbone front axle and the integral rear axle are made largely from aluminium. They allow the spring and damper systems to respond with great precision to inconsistencies in the road surface and ensure optimum road holding at all times. The overall result is a balance between sporting ability and ride comfort that no rival can better. What's more, the car's set-up can be adapted to suit individual needs or the driving situation at hand using the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console. Pressing the button changes the driving mode, altering the responses of the accelerator and steering, as well as - if fitted - the shift characteristics of the automatic gearbox and the settings of the electronically controlled dampers.

After unloading items from the boot, customers can therefore also close the tailgate without having to put down the items they're holding.

New to the BMW 5-Series: BMW Lines offer detailed personalisation

BMW 5 ActiveHybrid, 2014

  •  BMW 5 ActiveHybrid, 2014

The broad spread of qualities has been recognised with a swathe of impressive ratings elsewhere as well.

Another option unique in this segment is the multifunction instrument display designed to enhance driving pleasure.

BMW 4-Series Convertible, 2014

  •  BMW 4-Series Convertible, 2014
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is visibly larger in width, track and wheelbase than the BMW 3-Series Convertible
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible heralds a new era in the premium mid-size range of open cars offered by BMW. The new design language introduced with the BMW 4-Series Coupe is even more evident in this second model of the series, enhancing the appearance of the BMW 4-Series Convertible while setting new standards in terms of dynamics, elegance and extraordinary driving pleasure - with the top up or down. In addition to having its own distinct design, the BMW 4-Series Convertible sets itself apart from its BMW 3-Series cousins through a number of distinguishing technical features.

The vehicle's impeccable balance of proportions and characteristic flowing lines stem from the typical BMW short overhangs front and rear, the stretched bonnet and set-back passenger compartment. The striking BMW design features up front - such as the double-kidney grille, twin circular headlights and the large air intakes in the front apron - are keen to display this convertible's family ties with the BMW 3-Series.

However, the dynamic convictions of the BMW 4-Series Convertible are expressed by elements such as the so-called Air Breathers positioned rearward of the front wheel arches. Together with the Air Curtains, these elements reduce turbulence and aerodynamic drag at the front wheels. The markedly flat design of the boot area at the rear underlines the flowing harmony of the overall vehicle silhouette. Horizontal lines and muscular wheel arches combine to accentuate the car's wide track and rear-wheel drive concept.

Improved roof design and construction. Extra comfort. More functionality
The design language of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible is reflected in the car's unmistakable and elegant silhouette with balanced proportions when the top is down, and in the sleek look of the roofline - without a B column - when the hardtop is closed. The three-piece retractable hardtop of the BMW 4-Series Convertible is distinguished by advanced soundproofing with its "noise-absorbing" headliner, ensuring quietness and genuine passenger comfort under all weather conditions - even in winter. The interior roof is fully lined and features lamps that add to the ambience expected of a premium sport coupe. When the top is down and stored in the boot, the standard load and unload assistance function pivots the folded roof in the luggage compartment upwards to provide ample storage space and easy access. Thus even large and bulky items and luggage can be conveniently stowed when the top is down. The low and sporty seats ensure more headroom as well as added rear legroom in comparison to the predecessor model.

Individual equipment lines and exclusive details
The interior of the BMW 4-Series Convertible presents a stylish fusion of sporty allure, elegance and exclusivity. All of the controls are arranged ergonomically around the driver to provide optimum access to all functions. The doors are designed so that all the lines converge towards the rear, and bright colour combinations featuring a two-tone effect for the door and side panels contribute in combination with the hardtop cover to the "boat deck" look. This wrap-around interior design provides for a seating ensemble that allows all passengers to share the open-sky driving experience.

The design of the seats is new and includes integrated seatbelts. The seats are electrically adjustable as standard. If desired, the standard seats and the optional sport seats with recessed head restraints can be equipped with neck warmers for the driver and front passenger, an optional extra available for the first time.

When the top is down, the temperature setting is automatically controlled in relation to the outdoor temperature and the speed of the vehicle.

In addition to the standard model, three specially equipped lines and an M Sport package are also available. The Sport Line, Modern Line and Luxury Line versions can be selected to personalise the new convertible with special interior and exterior accents. The fine materials and meticulous craftsmanship underline the premium ambience of the BMW 4-Series Convertible.

Driving dynamics from the top drawer
In addition to the enjoyment of the unrivalled open-air driving experience at the push of a button, the BMW 4-Series Convertible also impresses with exhilarating performance and sovereign handling. BMW engineers have succeeded in making key improvements in areas such as steering accuracy, precision and agility. Sophisticated chassis technology, torque-steer-free Electric Power Steering, 50:50 weight distribution, a programme of fine-tuning in the wind tunnel and a lightweight construction concept enabled them to build an unadulterated driving machine. The sporty look of the convertible is evident in the longer wheelbase, wider track and standard lower suspension when compared with its predecessor model. Among many factors, the extremely low centre of gravity also accounts for the remarkable performance and handling of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible.

Two petrol engines and one diesel available at model launch

At model launch the BMW 4-Series Convertible can be delivered with an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine (BMW 435i Convertible), a four-cylinder petrol engine (BMW 428i Convertible) and a four-cylinder diesel (BMW 420d Convertible). These engines cover the performance range from 135 kW/184 hp to 225 kW/306 hp and feature the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. These state-of-the-art engines imbue the BMW 4-Series Convertible with outstanding acceleration and elasticity while intelligently reducing fuel consumption in compliance with the EU6 standard.

Six-speed manual or eight-speed Sports automatic transmission

The power from the engines is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. BMW also offers all engine variants with an optional eight-speed Sports automatic transmission that allows the driver to change gears manually by using shift paddles on the steering wheel. Both transmissions are equipped as standard with the Auto Start Stop function.

BMW EfficientDynamics

The sheer driving pleasure of the BMW 4-Series Convertible is accompanied by outstanding economy. The source of this low fuel consumption can be traced to BMW EfficientDynamics, with innovations that can be found throughout the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. In addition to the optimised fuel economy of the petrol and diesel engines, the intelligent lightweight construction concept and honed aerodynamics - headlined by the Air Curtains and Air Breathers - also help to maximise efficiency. Other features such as the Auto Start Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, the gear shift indicator, on-demand operation of ancillary units and the innovative Proactive Driving Assistant all do their part to ensure low fuel consumption and reduced emissions, without compromising driving performance. The ECO PRO mode can even lead to fuel savings of 20 per cent. In conjunction with the automatic transmission, the new convertible - like the BMW 4-Series Coupe - also features a coasting mode for the first time.

BMW ConnectedDrive
BMW was early in recognising the significance of connecting the automobile with its environment through intelligent networking technologies and thus is able to offer unique mobility services and driver assistance systems. These innovations are available from the Connected Drive product range as standard or optional equipment for the BMW 4-Series Convertible and, for a limited time, some can even be ordered after the initial vehicle purchase. With these innovations, the new BMW 4-Series Convertible is setting standards in terms of safety, convenience and infotainment. Among the highlights are a new generation of the Navigation System Professional, the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display, Driving Assistant Plus, which warns the driver of a potential collision with a pedestrian, the intelligent, glare-free LED High Beam Assistant, Active Protection with Attentiveness Assistant and the latest development stage of the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.

Design and functionality: Aesthetic appeal, the exciting convertible experience and daily reliability without compromises

The new BMW 4-Series Convertible represents the fifth generation in the BMW heritage of premium mid-size convertibles.

Just like the BMW 4-Series Coupe, the new BMW 4-Series Convertible introduces new dimensions of aesthetic design and sportiness. At the same time, the new model reinforces the company's claim to years of market leadership when it comes to designing and building premium convertibles for the mid-size segment. More than ever before, it is the design language of the BMW 4-Series Convertible that accounts for its eye-catching and powerful presence on the road. The synergy of outstanding and dynamic performance with maximum driving pleasure is a further milestone in the story begun by the BMW 4-Series Coupe and now being continued by the launch of the BMW 4-Series Convertible.

Athletic elegance, impeccable proportions
Traditionally BMW convertibles have always been styling trendsetters thanks to their dynamic and balanced proportions, both when the top is up or down. The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is no exception. For example, its dimensions differ significantly from the outgoing BMW 3-Series Convertible. The overall length of 4638 millimetres has been extended by 26 mm, the wheelbase has grown by 50 mm and, together with the 43 mm added to the front track (1825 millimetres), this rounds off the athletic yet elegant appearance of the vehicle. The shorter overhangs in comparison with the BMW 3-Series Convertible, the long bonnet, the set-back passenger compartment and the wider track (+ 45 mm front, + 81 mm rear) further accent the silhouette.

Eye-catching front end with prominently sporting contours
Although the BMW 4-Series Convertible expresses more dynamic conviction and sportiness than its predecessor, the design of the front end reflects its close family ties with the BMW 3-Series. The kidney grille and twin headlights are characteristic design elements that are unmistakably BMW. The car's head-turning front end is a demonstration of precise contours and multifaceted surfaces. The optional adaptive full-LED twin headlights, with their hexagonal design, team up with the slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille to form a single stylistic unit and strengthen the athletic appearance of the BMW 4-Series Convertible on the road. The width of the vehicle is accentuated by a large air intake in the front apron below the headlight line. On the far left and right-hand edges of the air intake are the additional, aerodynamically refined small vertical apertures for the Air Curtains.

Flowing lines shape the elegantly sporty silhouette
Powerfully taut surfaces and precise, sweeping lines define the athletic outline of the BMW 4-Series Convertible. The sloping roofline stretches the car's overall appearance and elegantly accentuates the sporting profile of the flanks. The moulding at the juncture of the three-piece folding hardtop and the body is an eye-catching touch. It is available in chrome, black or satinated aluminium, depending on the model variant. Additionally, the shallow, homogeneous side window graphic with the signature BMW Hofmeister kink at the trailing edge of the C-pillar generates dynamic visual tension. Below the windows, the double swage line inherited from the BMW 3-Series teams up with the striking door sill line to strengthen the body's dynamic wedge shape. The car exudes dynamic elegance when the top is down, and the smooth, flowing look of the silhouette is in no way compromised by radio antennas or the roll-over bars, which are intelligently hidden behind the rear head restraints.

Located just rearwards of the BMW 4-Series Convertible's front wheels are Air Breathers designed to reduce drag around the wheel arches. Together, the Air Breathers and Air Curtains underline the sporting character of the car's design and provide tangible evidence of the innovative aerodynamic solutions devised by BMW as part of its BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy. The sporting character of the BMW 4-Series Convertible extends into the powerful design of the rear. The prominent horizontal lines and broadly stretched L-shaped tail lights positioned at the outer edges of the rear draw extra attention to the muscular wheel arches and wide track.

BMW 2-Series Coupe with M Performance Parts, 2014

  •  BMW 2-Series Coupe with M Performance Parts, 2014

The BMW M Performance Power Kit available for the BMW 220d Coupé creates perfect starting conditions, increasing the output of the 4-cylinder diesel engine by 12 kW/16 bhp to 147 kW/200 bhp and maximum torque by 40 Nm to 420 Nm. The increased sprint capacity achieved has no impact on fuel consumption and exhaust emission figures. A BMW M Performance silencer system is available for the BMW M235i Coupé which reduces exhaust gas pressure to produce a striking, sports-style sound. In addition BMW M Performance tailpipe trim elements are offered in chrome or carbon, bearing the M logo.

The market launch of the BMW 2-Series Coupé clinches pole position in the premium compact segment. The figure 2 in the model designation stands for supreme sporty flair while the letter M refers to the attractive features available for making a dynamic driving experience even more intensive. As in the case of the BMW M Performance automobile BMW M235i, BMW M Performance parts developed for all variants of the BMW 2-Series Coupé will be available as of the market launch in March 2014. The retrofit components designed in close collaboration with BMW M GmbH in the areas of drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit perceptibly boost driving dynamics as well as underscoring the athletic appearance and sporty interior ambience of the new 2-door model. The product selection forms part of the Original BMW Parts program and enables the driver of a BMW 2-Series Coupé to add a touch of individual style in a way that expresses motor racing enthusiasm.

A highlight in the suspension area is the BMW M Performance limited-slip differential available for the BMW M235i Coupé. When the dynamic stability control function DSC is deactivated, the torque-sensitive mechanical limited-slip differential in the rear axle ensures traction-optimised distribution of drive torque between the rear wheels. It reduces the slip that occurs on the wheel with less grip by transferring more drive power to the other wheels using a blocking effect. This converts engine power into forward momentum as effectively as possible so as to be able to accelerate out of a bend even more dynamically, for instance.

Products available for all model variants include the BMW M Performance sports suspension including a lowering of 20 millimetres as compared to the standard version, as well as specific dampers and shortened coil springs finished in red, and the especially light and high-capacity BMW M Performance brake system with brake calipers painted in a choice of red, yellow or orange. 19-inch forged BMW M Performance light alloy wheels are also available in two design versions.

The exterior components created to optimise aerodynamic properties have been developed with characteristic M precision. As a supplement to the M sports package available ex works and in conjunction with the BMW M Performance rear spoiler in carbon there is a BMW M Performance Aerodynamic Kit available for the front apron which has been tailored specifically to this model. The combination of air ducting elements at front and rear guarantees an ideal aerodynamic balance and can be supplemented with a diffuser insert for the rear apron as well as attachments for the side sills. Other individual accents to the outer appearance of the BMW 2-Series Coupé can be added by means of a black decorative grid for the BMW kidney grille, exterior caps in carbon, side sill foils with M Performance inscription and BMW M Performance accent stripes in two colour versions.

An cockpit ambience inspired by motor racing is created by the BMW M Performance sports steering wheel in Alcantara/carbon finish with red central marking and Race Display in 12-o'clock position, a gear lever and handbrake handle in carbon and an Alcantara gaiter. A carbon finish is likewise available for the gear selector switch of the automatic transmission. Other features available for a highly sporty and individually designed interior include interior strips in carbon and Alcantara, high-grade steel pedals and a driver footrest in corresponding design.

BMW 2-Series Coupe, 2014

  •  BMW 2-Series Coupe, 2014
There is clear water between the BMW 2-Series Coupe and the BMW 1-Series, the new model assuming a character all of its own. This differentiation is immediately recognisable in the design of the new car, but it also makes its presence felt in terms of performance. The BMW 2-Series Coupe is an even more eye-catching creation than its predecessor, the resoundingly successful BMW 1-Series Coupe (of which more than 150,000 units have been sold worldwide). As well as a standalone appearance and increased dimensions, there is also greater depth to its product substance in terms of both technology and standard equipment. The result is a new dimension in driving dynamics, aesthetic appeal and premium allure in the compact segment, highlighted by the "2" in the new car's model designation. The number 2 has denoted the presence of a supremely sporting driving experience in a compact two-door car for over 45 years - ever since the introduction of the BMW 02 range.

BMW model family celebrates the premiere of another new model series - BMW 2-Series Coupe raises the bar in the premium compact segment in terms of dynamic ability, aesthetic appeal and emotional allure; a distinctive vehicle concept unique in its segment, with a two-door body in classic three-box design typical of BMW Coupes, four seats, rear-wheel drive and an engine range and chassis set-up focused squarely on sporting ability.

This is not the first time that BMW has treated the compact segment to its customary brand of driving pleasure. The BMW 1-Series, for example, has fulfilled this role for almost 10 years now, its standout position among its rivals rooted most prominently in its rear-wheel-drive concept (still a unique proposition in this class), powerful engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a compelling premium character. And now the BMW 2-Series Coupe takes the levels of driving pleasure on offer in a compact model to even greater heights. The new two-door cuts a particularly impressive figure with its distinctive body design, a range of extremely powerful engines and specially configured chassis technology.

Characteristic features of a BMW Coupe
The specific vehicle concept behind the BMW 2-Series Coupe - unique in its segment - is faithfully reflected in its body design. The two-door model is first and foremost a Coupe from the BMW brand, and the design features that identify a member of this special breed - a three-box body with clearly defined boot and low-slung silhouette, a long bonnet, doors with frameless windows and a dynamically stretched roofline flowing smoothly into the rear end - are carried over into a compact model with greater enthusiasm and intent than ever. The ultra-sporty driving characteristics of the BMW 2-Series Coupe - generated by a hand-picked selection of engines and chassis technology tuned to make the perfect pairing - are thus unambiguously expressed in the design of the exterior. The 135 kW/184 hp four-cylinder engine in the BMW 220i Coupe is making its debut in a compact BMW model, and the 240 kW/326 hp six-cylinder in-line engine under the bonnet of the BMW M235i Coupe earns it top billing as the most powerful petrol driven member of the BMW M Performance Automobile line-up.

The specific proportions of the BMW 2-Series Coupe are contained within a body measuring 4,432 millimetres in length. The two-door model is therefore 108 millimetres longer than the BMW 1-Series and 72 millimetres longer than the outgoing BMW 1-Series Coupe. The new compact Coupe is also 32 millimetres wider than its predecessor (at 1,774 millimetres), and has a 30-millimetre longer wheelbase (2,690 millimetres) and wider tracks (front: 1,521 millimetres, +41 millimetres; rear: 1,556 millimetres, +43 millimetres). At the same time the vehicle height has been lowered by 5 millimetres to 1,418 millimetres. The result is an increase in interior space and 20 litres of extra boot capacity (now 390 litres). Added to which, the BMW 2-Series Coupe also boasts more efficient aerodynamics than both the BMW 1-Series and its predecessor, as reflected in a Cd of 0.29 for the BMW 220i Coupe.

Sporting tradition on a compact footprint
The BMW 2-Series Coupe builds on the brand's tradition of compact models offering a satisfying degree of driver engagement. And the presence of the 2 in the model designation creates a close link to this heritage. The introduction in 1966 of the BMW 1600-2, for instance, opened up a whole new vehicle segment. Inspired most profoundly by its precisely tailored package of powertrain and chassis technology, the two-door Coupe became a global standard-bearer for sporty handling and intense driving pleasure in the compact car segment. Additional engine variants increased the appeal of the new model series. For example, the BMW 2002 presented in 1968 took centre stage - in terms of both popularity and its success in turning "Freude am Fahren" (Sheer Driving Pleasure) from a slogan into an experience for whole new target groups. The most spectacular variant was the 125 kW/170 hp BMW 2002 turbo - the first model from a European manufacturer to gain the services of a turbocharger.

The design: Strong character cuts a distinctive figure
An instantly beguiling blend of sporting prowess and elegance marks out the design of BMW Coupes. And the exterior features which are such a key element of this identity have been carried over to the compact segment car with greater purpose than ever for the BMW 2-Series Coupe. The proportions, lines and surface design of the car have all been tailored to accentuate both the agile driving properties of the two-door and its unique appearance. The BMW 2-Series Coupe has its own specific design language, which secures it a stand-out position in the brand's model range and - most importantly - sets it apart unmistakably from its segment rivals.

Sporting presence, muscular agility and assured elegance come together in the exterior design of the BMW 2-Series Coupe. Defining elements of its interior, meanwhile, include the driver-focused cockpit design you expect of a BMW and a light and contemporary brand of functionality. The car's more clearly distinguished design identity illustrates its progress in moving the game on from its predecessor. The BMW 2-Series Coupe embodies Sheer Driving Pleasure in more concentrated and intense form than ever before in the premium compact segment.

Classical BMW features and a fresh interpretation of traditional Coupe elements

The individual vehicle concept of the BMW 2-Series Coupe is underlined by its specific front and rear end design, dynamically stretched lines and an almost 11-centimetre increase in body length over the BMW 1-Series. Characteristic design elements of a BMW Coupe have been carried over into the compact segment and signature brand features given a fresh twist.

Another stand-out feature of BMW Coupes - the hallmark three-box body structure with a clear distinction between roofline and boot - has a particularly clear presence in the new compact model. Like the side swage lines that wrap around into the rear end, this feature picks up on characteristic styling elements of the BMW 02, drawing a link between the new car and the brand's long tradition of sporting and agile compact models.

Lines tapering down dynamically towards the BMW kidney grille lend the front end of the BMW 2-Series Coupe a forward-surging presence. The modified contours of the headlight units narrow at their inner extremes, while a standard accent strip - or, if the optional bi-xenon lights are fitted, an LED accent light - cuts across the top of the hallmark BMW twin circular lights. The BMW kidney grille, which is separated from the headlights by narrow strips on either side, protrudes clearly from the front of the car and slants forward at a slight angle. The three-dimensional design of the grille surround and its 11 vertical bars reinforce the car's striking appearance. The lower air intake is split into three sections. The two outer elements are particularly large and their outlines replicate the form of the headlight units. Air Curtains are integrated harmoniously into an additional section at the outer edges of the front apron and channel the onrushing air precisely behind the front side panels, causing it to hang over the wheels like a curtain. This reduces turbulence and further enhances the outstanding aerodynamics of the BMW 2-Series Coupe.

The side view of the BMW 2-Series Coupe sees signature brand features like a long bonnet, short overhangs, set-back passenger compartment, Hofmeister kink (the counter-swing in the window frame at the trailing edge of the C-pillars) and door openers integrated into the swage line blending with coupe-specific design elements, chief among them the slim window graphic and sweeping roofline gliding back smoothly into the rear end. A prominent character line above the door sill sweeps up rearwards of the B-pillar into the rear wheel arch, whose powerfully flared form focuses the mind on the car's rear-wheel drive and swells the BMW 2-Series Coupe's body to its broadest point. The dynamic wedge shape of the two-door model is emphasised, too, by the door sill line itself, which likewise rises up towards the rear. The BMW 2-Series Coupe also has doors with frameless windows and turn signal indicators integrated into the exterior mirrors.

The rear of the BMW 2-Series Coupe is a broad and powerful affair, an impression reinforced by the single-piece light units reaching far into the car's flanks in the L-shape familiar from other BMW models. An unmistakable night design is provided by the likewise L-shaped LED rear light strips within the units. The third brake light positioned at the upper edge of the rear window is also fed by LED units.

The lines along the sides of the boot lid taper downwards slightly. This styling cue, along with the additional crease and suggested diffuser element in the rear apron, accentuates the BMW 2-Series Coupe's road focus and low centre of gravity. And yet the new car also has a wider boot aperture than its predecessor.

The exterior paintwork of the BMW 2-Series Coupe can be ordered in a choice of two non-metallic and 10 metallic shades, while customers can also specify Estoril Blue metallic as part of the M Sport package.

Interior: cockpit design ensures maximum driving pleasure; premium ambience can be enjoyed from four seats

The dominant themes of the BMW 2-Series Coupe's interior are the driver-focused design of the cockpit, contemporary functionality and high-quality materials. An Easy Entry function for the front seats facilitates access to the two rear seats, which offer 21 millimetres more legroom than the outgoing Coupe, while headroom for the driver and front passenger has grown by a similar extent. Functionality levels are raised another notch by features including large storage compartments in the doors. The structure of the surfaces for the instrument panel, centre console and door trim is dominated by the "layering" effect created by various overlapping surfaces. The length of the doors is emphasised by the converging lines of the door trim elements.

If the BMW 2-Series Coupe is fitted with an optional navigation system or the BMW Professional radio, it will also feature the BMW iDrive operating system, which includes a freestanding onboard monitor in flatscreen design. The Control Display comes in 6.5 or 8.8-inch form, depending on the version specified, while the Controller on the centre console has a touch-sensitive surface which allows the driver to input characters (if the Navigation system Professional is fitted).

Dakota leather trim is available as an alternative to the standard cloth seat surfaces in a choice of three colours. The interior trim strips come in matt Satin Silver as standard but are also optionally available in brushed aluminium or Fineline Stream exquisite wood.

Serving the cause of individual style: BMW Sport Line, BMW Modern Line and the M Sport package

The BMW Lines - available as an alternative to standard specification for the BMW 2-Series Coupe - offer harmoniously coordinated exterior and interior design and equipment features. Both the BMW Sport Line and BMW Modern Line include 17-inch light-alloy wheels in exclusive designs, ambient lighting with variable use of colours and special seat upholstery, interior trim strip and car key designs. BMW Sport Line brings a high-gloss black finish for the outer air intake surrounds, the front of the kidney grille bars, the cross rib in the centre air intake and the rear apron, emphasising the dynamic credentials of the two-door newcomer. And BMW Modern Line serves the cause of progressive elegance through the use of matt aluminium for the design elements mentioned above and a body-coloured paint finish for the cross rib in the centre air intake.

Also available from the launch of the BMW 2-Series Coupe is the M Sport package developed specially for the new model. This option comprises bespoke suspension tuning (including a 10-millimetre drop in ride height and 17-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design), aerodynamically optimised body elements (including large front air intakes, striking side skirts and a diffuser for the rear apron), plus a special design for the BMW kidney grille and an exhaust tailpipe embellisher in high-gloss chrome. In addition to aluminium door sill strips bearing the M logo, features such as sports seats for the driver and front passenger, Aluminium Hexagon interior trim strips with an accent strip in Estoril Blue, a special dial design for the instrument cluster, ambient lighting and an M driver's footrest also combine to bring an intense aura of sporty driving to the interior of the BMW 2-Series Coupe.

The driving experience: A perfect balance of agility, efficiency and comfort

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology ensures an unbeatable balance between driving pleasure and fuel economy in both the petrol and the diesel engines available from launch for the BMW 2-Series Coupe. Output is up by as much as 10 kW over the new car's predecessor, yet average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle has dropped by up to 21 per cent, depending on the model. The specially assembled engine line-up for the BMW 2-Series Coupe, the advanced chassis technology tuned precisely to the engine output on offer and the rear-wheel-drive configuration unique in its segment provide a sporty driving experience beyond the reach of any rival, combined with outstanding comfort. Added to which, the standard Driving Experience Control switch gives drivers the option - at the touch of a button - of adjusting the car's set-up to their individual preferences or the driving situation at hand.

One four-cylinder petrol engine and one four-cylinder diesel unit are available from launch, putting 135 kW/184 hp at the disposal of the BMW 220i Coupe and BMW 220d Coupe. Joining them centre stage, with a six-cylinder in-line engine developing 240 kW/326 hp, is the BMW M235i Coupe (see chapter 5). And following hot on the heels of that trio are two more four-cylinder diesel models in the form of the BMW 218d Coupe (105 kW/143 hp) and BMW 225d Coupe (160 kW/218 hp). All the engines can be combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox (standard in the BMW 225d Coupe) for fuel consumption and emissions figures that are even lower than those achieved with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. All model variants come with extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology as standard and meet the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust standard.
