The Porsche 911 RSR shone 2013 with magnificent first and second place finishes (GT-Class). The GT racer from Weissach, which is distinguished by its systematic lightweight design and refined aerodynamics, has been further improved in many aspects for 2014. And with success: it started the 2014 season impressively as class victor at the 24-hour race at Daytona.

The 911 RSR, which is used in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the new United Sports Car Championship in the USA and Canada as part of the WEC World Sportscar Championship series, made its appearance in 2013 as a successor to the successful 911 GT3 RSR. It is based on the seventh generation of the 911 sports car icon. As in its production car counterpart, its wheelbase was lengthened by a full ten centimetres. A new wishbone front suspension replaces the previously used MacPherson sprint strut suspension. The lightweight racing gearbox is also a special new development by Porsche Motorsport. Its six gears are shifted by shift paddles on the steering wheel. The 470 hp four-litre flat six engine was taken from the previous model and optimised in its details.

One of the central focuses in developing the 911 RSR was to attain a balanced weight distribution. The vehicle's centre of gravity is also significantly lower than in the previous model. Carbon fibre material assumes a special significance here. The front and rear wings, front and rear lids, the doors, underbody, wheel arch panels, rear wing, dashboard and centre console are made of this exceptionally lightweight and strong material. In addition, all windows are made of very thin and lightweight polycarbonate. The familiar lightweight lithium-ion battery of the GT street models also makes a contribution towards weight savings.

More service-friendly for shorter pit stops
The look of the new 911 RSR is marked by broad flared wings and a deep cooling air channel at the front end. The new air flow system enables a centrally located radiator at the front end, which operates even more efficiently than in the previous model. Climate control of the interior was also made more efficient. For enhanced service friendliness and shorter repair times, a quick-change concept for body parts was tuned for long-distance racing. The nose, front lid and rear apron are attached with quick-action clamps and can be replaced within just a few seconds.

The static cornering lights that are positioned very low in the front end improve the driver's view in bends. This improves night-time driving safety. The reflective labels on cockpit controls, combined with anti-glare interior lighting, provide for optimal legibility in darkness. The layout of switches on the new steering wheel was developed together with the Porsche factory drivers. From the outset, they contributed their wealth of experience in GT motorsport to the design of the 911 RSR.

Numerous improvements
The 911 RSR was systematically further improved for the 2014 season. The redesigned front end, for example, and the new rear wing provide for optimal aerodynamic balance and therefore for greater stability in fast driving through bends. Even more precise steering response, which leads to better vehicle handling in bends at slow and moderate speeds, was attained by optimising front suspension kinematics. Further improvements to the car's structural rigidity result in more precise steering response. Also new is the engine air induction system, which was optimised in its details, such as in its air filter geometry, which contributes towards reducing the effects of contamination on power output. The new FT3 safety fuel tank with a lowered centre of gravity enables improved filling under race conditions.

Live telemetry that is permanently transmitted to the command station via the car's roof antenna ensures that engineers are always well informed of all relevant vehicle data with over 200 measurement values. In addition, all data is stored on a memory card in the vehicle.

With the GT3, Porsche is marking this 911 anniversary year by opening a new chapter in the area of high performance sports cars for circuit tracks. Both engine and transmission, as well as body and chassis are entirely new, and extend the 911 GT3 concept with an impressive performance leap. This is due to the new active rear-wheel steering, and the GT3-specific Porsche dual-clutch transmission with the characteristics of a sequential gearbox used in motor racing. Following the total production of 14,145 GT3 cars since 1999, the fifth generation of the 911 GT3, an all-round redevelopment, is set to take on the pole position among the thoroughbred Porsche sports cars with naturally aspirated engines.Porsche has a race car at its heart. And never was the close relation to car racing so tangible. The new Porsche 911 GT3 stands for a redefined, even more emotional driving experience. The sports car that was developed from scratch offers even more dynamism and refined everyday practicality at the highest level.

The mission of the Porsche 911 GT3 is unmistakable: driving dynamics. Each and every relevant detail has been fine-tuned to that. The result is impressive: the new 911 GT3 laps the Nürburgring Northern Loop, indisputably the most challenging race track in the world, in a mere 7:25 minutes. A benchmark of great significance for the sportiest 911 with a naturally aspirated engine. Because around 80 percent of all 911 GT3 vehicles are also driven on race tracks.

Drive system and chassis of the new 911 GT3 have been systematically developed to even better performance, precision and transverse dynamics. Additionally, Porsche is using active rear-wheel steering for the first time. Depending on the speed, the system steers in the opposite or the same direction as the front wheels, thereby improving agility and stability. Among the other new driving dynamics features are the electronically controlled, fully variable rear differential lock, and the dynamic engine mounts. The height, toe and camber of the newly developed all-aluminium chassis are still adjustable. The new, 20-inch forged alloy wheels with central locking are used for optimal road contact.

New high-performance drive system with cutting-edge technology
Porsche has developed an entirely new engine for the 911 GT3. For the first time, the classical six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine has direct petrol injection in the racing car-like 911, combined with high-performance elements such as dry sump lubrication, titanium connecting rods and forged pistons.

In combination with valve control by rocker lever, an extremely high-revving engine capable of reaching up to 9,000 rpm emerged. For the driver, this means an even broader engine speed range that can bring decisive time advantages on the race track. The speedy response of the drive system is enhanced by the new power transmission without any interruption in propulsive power. As the first 911 GT3, the new model has a Porsche Doppelkupplung dual-clutch transmission (PDK) that had been originally developed for racing and has now made a comeback in a perfected form. The PDK is another feature specially developed for the 911 GT3, with characteristics directly inspired by the sequential gearboxes used in motor racing, thus granting the driver further benefits when it comes to performance, dynamics and driving fun.

Fascinating sports engine with high-revving concept
The new engine of the Porsche 911 GT3 is based on the six-cylinder used in the current 911 Carrera generation. The structural changes to the base engine had one principal goal: to develop the characteristic 911 GT3 high-revving concept further. High speeds enable high performance and gear changes, whereby the revolutions remain in the range of maximum power after shifting up. Thus the six-cylinder reaches its maximum performance of 475 hp (350 kW) at 8,250 rpm; the nominal torque of 440 Newton metres (Nm) is available at 6,250 rpm. The consistent development focus made it possible to increase the maximum speed to 9,000 rpm. This enables the 911 GT3 to reach peak performance values among street-legal vehicles. The result is a drive system that ventures even further into the racing range than ever before with a litre performance of 125 hp per litre.

With its low moving masses, the engine develops high speed dynamics. Thus the new 911 GT3 does not only feature an enormous revving capacity but also an excellent response across the entire engine speed range. These features ensure a particularly sporty driving experience in all conditions.

Special cylinder heads with rocker arm control from motor racing
The focus of the new development were the cylinder heads, which differ fundamentally from those of the base engine, and were specifically developed for the 911 GT3. To enable peak performance values and engine speeds, the new cylinder heads are equipped with large intake and exhaust ports, large valves, and separate valve control with rocker arm. Cooling and oil supply are also particularly powerful to account for the high loads.

The valve actuation via rocker arms with hydraulic valve clearance compensation is another unique feature. The concept embodied in the Porsche 911 GT3 engine originates from racing and allows very high engine speeds on the one hand, while the other cams with performance-oriented profiles permit for large strokes and long valve opening times. The advantage of the rocker arm control is mainly in the low moving masses that allow high engine speeds, and the large contact area between the cam and rocker arm.

Advanced dry sump lubrication ensures the oil supply
The typically high and frequent lateral acceleration occurring with an ambitious driving style on the race track makes high demands on the oil supply. That's why the 911 GT3, as previously, has dry sump lubrication, i.e. the oil is siphoned permanently from the oil pan and is stored in a separate receptacle. In addition, the new 911 GT3 engine has for the first time an oil separator, a construction that also originates in racing. The oil separator consists of a cover between the crankcase and the oil pan featuring 18 single holes (three per cylinder) with crescent-shaped blades. Especially with high torques, the splash oil stirred up by the crankshaft is separated at the crescent-shaped blades ("planed") into the oil pan. Thus the amount of splash oil in the crankcase is lessened and as a consequence the so-called splashing losses of the engine are reduced. Alongside the demand-controlled oil pump, the new 911 GT3 also has two splash oil nozzles per piston that are opened in tandem depending on the temperature, load and torque. This guarantees an intensive cooling of the pistons, which are subject to high thermal loads.

More torque at the press of a button
As was the case with the predecessor, the new 911 GT3 also offers the driver the possibility of increasing the torque in the mid range at the press of a button. When activated, the backpressure in the sports exhaust system is further reduced, improving gas exchange, thus increasing the torque in the 3,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm range considerably again.

Dual-clutch transmission PDK with special 911 GT3 layout
The dual-clutch transmission (PDK) originates from Porsche racing. With the Porsche 911 GT3, it returns to the racetrack: the motor sports engineers have revised the PDK extensively both in terms of mechanics and control technology for the new high-performance sports car.

The resulting transmission provides the driver with all the essential driving dynamics of the previous manual transmission, complemented with the performance benefits of the dual-clutch transmission. During racetrack use, it can therefore be driven much like a sequential manual gearbox - with even more performance and emotional driving fun.

Two modes are available to the driver: manual shifting or the adaptive shift programme. Manual shifting is done using two paddles on the steering wheel, the right for upshifts and the left for downshifts. Shorter shifting travel and optimised actuating force result in even faster gearshifts with concise feedback, similar to the operating characteristics of the 911 GT3 Cup race cars. Alternatively, the driver can also shift using the selector lever, with a shift pattern based on that used in professional motor sports: shifting up is done by pulling the lever back, shifting down by pushing it forward.

Ready for the racetrack: "lighting shifts" with extremely short reaction and gearshift times

Gearshifting strategy and response times of the 911 GT3 PDK were consistently designed for maximum performance, and are fundamentally different from the other Porsche sports cars. This becomes apparent to the driver during manual upshifts in the form of a "lightning shift," which permits reaction times of less than 100 milliseconds. To enhance driving performance, lighting shifts are implemented with a torque overshoot, and the gear change is conducted with a highly dynamic adaptation of the engine speed to the newly selected gear. The switching times are in a range that was previously reserved for the world of motor sports.

Paddle-neutral: de-clutching function in the 911 GT3 PDK
The dynamics of a sports car driven to optimum lap times is also determined by the clutch. That's why the PDK comes with a "paddle-neutral" feature. If the driver pulls both shift paddles simultaneously, the clutches of the PDK are opened, and the flow of power between the engine and drive is cut off. Once both shift paddles are released, the clutch engages at lightning speed if the PSM is switched off. With PSM switched on, the clutch is closed quickly, but in a less pulsed manner.

This function offers two principal advantages: the driver can, for example, neutralise the driving behaviour of the vehicle when oversteering in a wet curve by pulling the paddles, thus redirecting additional cornering force to the wheels of the rear axle. The second aspect relates to individual influence of the driving dynamics due to the pulsed onset of the driving force when engaging the clutch. Comparable to a traditional coupling with a manual transmission, the rear of the vehicle can be consciously destabilised for dynamic leaning into the curve. Furthermore, the driver can use the paddle-neutral for accelerating from a standstill. As is the case with manual transmission vehicles, the driver alone decides on how to accelerate using clutch and accelerator foot, without any assistance from drive and dynamic handling control systems.

Adaptive shifting with sports strategies
or the first time, the PDK provides the driver of the new 911 GT3 with the alternative of leaving gearshifting to the adaptive transmission control. In principle, the PDK of the new 911 GT3 comes with two gearshifting strategies: Normal and PDK Sport. This means that the gear changes of the new Porsche 911 GT3 are always fast. Gear shifts and shift points are adapted to the dynamics of the driver.

The PDK Sport mode is activated by pressing the correspondingly labelled button on the centre console. In this mode, the PDK uses shift maps that are tailored to the requirements of pure circuit race track operation. Gears are held longer, and upshifts occur at higher engine speeds. The circuit race track optimisation also entails that the shifting programme is still performance oriented, even at a moderately sporty driving style. The high-performance sports car is therefore always running at the performance-oriented operating points, and increased traction is available at any time without the driver having to shift gears.

Like the latest 911 Carrera models with PDK, the new 911 GT3 possesses the dynamic "Launch Control" start up function for maximum acceleration from a standstill. In the new 911 GT3, this function can be accessed at any time without having to activate another button. Analogous to the 911 Carrera models, the readiness for the acceleration start is displayed in the tachometer of the instrument cluster ("Launch Control").

With the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is doubling the driving fun to be had from the new 911 Carrera by putting a Cabriolet alongside the Coupé. The debut of the new generation of the sports car classic is being followed only a few months later by the open-top models of the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S in the new 911 design.

What the Coupé began with the new aluminium-steel body, the Cabriolet continues with the all-new, unique hood: As a result, the typical 911 roof line is initially retained in its entirety. Even when closed up, the Cabriolet cuts a fine figure. Intelligent lightweight design, even including the use of magnesium in the hood, ensures less weight and more sportiness, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. With the open-top 911s as well, Porsche has managed to reverse the weight spiral and make the new Cabrio models significantly lighter than its predecessors.

Each of the two new Cabriolets has the same engine as its Carrera Coupé equivalent. The rear of the 911 Carrera Cabrio houses a 3.4-litre flat engine generating 350 hp (257 kW) of power driving the rear wheels through a seven-gear manual transmission. The open-top Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet comes with a 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine developing 400 hp (294 kW) and also a seven-gear manual transmission featured as standard. That means that the open-top 911s as well are distancing themselves even further from the competition in terms of efficiency; both models consume less than ten litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC). 
The Cabriolets as well have the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) available as an optional extra, delivering even lower fuel consumption and shorter acceleration times.

With the longer wheelbase compared with the predecessor model, the wider front track and the new electro-mechanical power steering, the new Cabriolets offer even sportier driving characteristics, greater precision and agility. Depending on model, there are other standard or optional active control systems available as well that further enhance the driving dynamics.

The 911 Carrera Cabriolet will be launched in Germany on March 3, 2012. The prices for the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet start in Germany with 100,532 Euros, the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet starts with 114,931 Euros including value-added tax in both cases.

Open-top lightweight 911 with new design language
The new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet's design echoes its predecessor's styling while developing an entirely new design language: thanks to a longer wheelbase combined with shorter overhangs, the vehicle makes a compact, made to measure impression. A vehicle height reduced by a further four millimetres (three millimetres in the case of the 911 Carrera S) compared with the 911 Carrera Coupé strikes a distinctly sporty tone in outward appearance.

As a result of the 52 millimetre wider front track compared with the predecessor, the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet has an even more solid stance on the road. The vehicle's 61 millimetre greater width at the front creates an even more harmonious vehicle silhouette. Larger air intakes underneath the redeveloped front lights emphasise the striking appearance. Together with the new Bi-Xenon headlights, they give the new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet a distinctive face.

The rear end echoes the sporty looks of the car's front end. It is characterised in particular by the new wider rear spoiler below the engine lid air intakes. The outer edge of the lid is part of the continuous design edge, which cleverly emphasises the vehicle's width. The compact dimensions of the redeveloped top system when stowed enabled the space above the engine to be used to best effect. The result: an elegantly flat and harmonious rear section.

Body: even stiffer and up to 60 kilograms lighter
The innovative lightweight-body of the 911 Carrera family was redesigned from the ground up for Coupé and Cabriolet alike. That means that the open-top 911 and fixed-roof model share both the weight advantages of the aluminium-steel body and the significantly improved rigidity, complemented by local reinforcement elements. It was possible to improve dynamic torsional rigidity, which has a critical influence on comfort, by 18 per cent in the new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet models. Notwithstanding the 911 Carrera Cabriolet's increased dimensions, all the measures as a whole have yielded significant weight reductions compared with the predecessor models.

Refined ambiance with numerous customisation options
The open-top 911 Carrera models' interior equipment largely follows the interior concept of the Coupé. As before, a central design element is the centre console rising up to the front. It ensures improved ergonomics by closer integration of driver and front passenger.

The new operating concept makes controlling the vehicle's central functions uncomplicated and intuitive. The new Cabriolets also offer greater comfort in the rear. For example, the shorter installation length of the new roll-over protection system creates more legroom compared with the predecessor model.

The dashboard is classically laid out. The 911's trademark five round instruments provide all the important information about the vehicle's operating state. The new 4.8-inch, high-resolution, TFT colour screen in the instrument cluster to the right of the rev counter contains extensive configurable display options for vehicle status, audio, telephone, navigation, map display, on-board computer and tyre pressure monitoring. With the optional Sport Chrono Package, a so-called G-Force display for showing longitudinal and lateral acceleration can be accessed on the multi-function screen. Vehicles with manual transmission also feature a shift assistant display for performance-optimised driving. The driving light assistant featured as standard automatically switches from daytime running lights to dipped beam as dusk falls and, for example, when traversing tunnels.

Sports seat system with greater range of adjustment as standard
The Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet's interior is rounded off by the sports seat system, featured as standard, with electrically adjustable backrest angle and height. Over and above the standard seat functionality, the optional sports seats with fully-electrical 14-way adjustment offer electrically-powered fore and aft adjustment, seat cushion angle, seat cushion height adjustment and four-way lumbar adjustment. The 18-way Adaptive Sports Seats Plus and prominent seat bolsters, also available as an option, feature additional adjustment of the seat cushion and seat back bolsters for optimal side support in any driving situation. Both versions include the Memory Package and electrical steering column adjustment. In conjunction with optional heated seats, seat ventilation is available for all sports seat versions.

Sound Package Plus featured as standard, top-of-the-range sound systems from Burmester® and BOSE® upon request

The new CDR-31 audio system, combined with the Sound Package Plus, featured as standard, provides acoustic information and entertainment. Porsche has teamed up with Burmester® to develop a special system for the 911 Carrera as the top-of-the-range sound system offering. The experience of the multiple prize-winning systems in the Panamera and Cayenne has been harnessed to achieve total output and sound quality unprecedented in the sports car segment. The system comprises twelve individually controllable loudspeakers, including an active so-called subwoofer built into the bodyshell with 140 millimetre speaker diameter and integrated 300 watt Class D output stage; complemented by 12 amplifier channels with a total output of more than 800 watts.

The BOSE® Surround Sound System continues to be offered as an option. It also features twelve loudspeakers, including a 100 watt active subwoofer built into the bodyshell with Class D output stage and 200 millimetre speaker diameter as well as eight amplifier channels, ensuring an impressive aural experience. This delivers an overall output of 445 watts.

Innovative lightweight roof with Coupé characteristics
The attention-getter with the 911 Carrera Cabriolet is the unique and all-new panel bow top. Thanks to the innovative technology, it has been possible for the first time to achieve the previously unachievable Coupé-like roof curvature of the closed top, which offers aerodynamic advantages into the bargain. Moreover, the weight of the entire top remains on a par with the predecessor model, notwithstanding the increased length and significantly enhanced comfort.

The top can be opened and closed in approximately 30 seconds respectively - as in the case of the predecessor up to a speed of 50 km/h. It is operated by means of a button on the centre console or, from the outside, by means of the remote control.

Porsche has traditionally set the highest standards for the 911 top. That is why the new folding roof as well - as with every previous 911 - is a completely standalone development. The first distinctive feature is apparent at a glance: the fabric roof is tensioned in an elegant arc from the front window frame to the convertible top compartment with styling that is almost identical to that of the Coupé. No roof bows are discernible under the fabric nor are there any sections that interrupt the flowing design. Even the heatable rear window is virtually flush-fitting thanks to a new technique and is integrated with the cover with only the most discreet of seams.

Porsche new development: Lightweight magnesium panel bow top
Critical to this shape, previously unachievable with fabric tops, is the innovative design as a panel bow top. This entails the entire fabric top - with the exception of the side panels - being tensioned over a rigid roof surface comprising four directly abutting individual segments. The four elements are the front roof frame, two panel bows and the rear window, the frame of which is made of magnesium, like the other segments.

With the top closed, the occupants enjoy a level of climate and noise comfort that comes closer to that of the Coupé than ever before. For example, the exterior material is underlaid over its entire area with an insulating mat. On the inside, the roof segments are covered with dimensionally stable roof linings that convey a comfortable interior feeling. The side panels as well are entirely clad with fabric so that with the hood closed, no technical components are visible any longer. The headroom as well is also broadly the same as inside the Coupé.

New: Fully integrated electric wind deflector
A further innovation in the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet is the built-in electric wind deflector. That makes fitting and removal a thing of the past. The new wind deflector is attached to a U-shaped tensioning bracket, which is fully integrated into the rear area when retracted, thereby not encroaching on the available space on the rear seats. At the push of a button, this bracket deploys within two seconds, in the process unrolling a mesh that is tensioned at right angles by a second movable deflection bracket behind the front seat armrests. The wind deflector can be deployed up to a speed of 120 km/h.

Sportier, more comfortable suspension
The complete redesign of the suspension has a knock-on effect on the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet's sportiness and comfort as well. In both models, the 100 millimetres longer wheelbase ensures significantly greater driving stability at high speed.

The wider front track width, 46 millimetres for the 911 Carrera Cabriolet and 52 millimetres for the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, further improves driving stability and agility when cornering. In addition - depending on model featured as standard or as an optional extra - the enhanced Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), the new Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, the completely revamped electro-mechanical power steering, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), the modified braking system and new wheels and tyres ensure driving performance of the highest order.

Electro-mechanical steering with Porsche's trademark precision and feedback
The new 911 Carrera generation sees Porsche's first use of electro-mechanical power steering, which is vastly superior to every other system on the market in terms of its efficiency and precision. The fundamental advantage compared with hydraulic power steering is the reduction in fuel consumption by at least 0.1 l/100 km. Additional new functions further enhance comfort and safety. Specific feedback is passed to the driver through the steering wheel and negative or unnecessary influences are filtered out.

Faster and safer cornering: Porsche Torque Vectoring
In the new 911, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) ensures yet greater agility, featured as standard in the open-top 911 Carrera S and available as an optional extra for the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. The system is available in two versions: the PTV version with mechanical differential lock when twinned with manual transmission and in PDK vehicles as PTV Plus with electronically controlled, fully variable differential lock. In a nutshell, PTV/PTV Plus improves the vehicle's steering behaviour and precision by means of precisely modulated braking interventions on the inside rear wheel when being driven in a highly dynamic style.

Option: Sport Chrono Package accentuates all sporty 911 characteristics
All new 911 Carrera models feature a Sport button as standard. It enables the driver to choose between more comfortable or fuel-efficient tuning and a sportier setup. The optional Sport Chrono Package with additional Sport Plus button makes for an even wider spread between a sporty setup and driving comfort in everyday use. In addition to refining all the relevant systems and functions for maximum performance, for the first time the Sport Chrono Package features controlled, dynamic engine mounts. The magneto-rheological engine mounts have been enhanced based on the technology introduced in the 911 GT3 and optimised for the new 911 Carrera.

A critical contribution to the impressive performance enhancement of the new 911 generation is made by Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), available as an option for the 911 Carrera S. Equipped with this system, the open-top model as well achieves a new level of lateral acceleration and handling. The vehicle's lateral inclination, for example when entering a bend, when cornering and changing lanes at speed is almost completely offset by the variable stabiliser system up to the maximum lateral acceleration.

Porsche Intelligent Performance: more power, exemplary low fuel consumption
The production models of the open-top 911 traditionally have the same engines as the Coupés. This has not changed with the new generation. But in return the differences with the predecessor models have become all the greater: developed in accordance with the principle of Porsche Intelligent Performance, fuel consumption fell and output increased.

Courtesy of enhancements within the engine itself, accompanied by the new functions thermal management, on-board electrical system recuperation and auto start/stop function, the new models are up to 15 per cent more economical and up to 15 hp more powerful. In short: even as a Cabriolet, the 911 Carrera remains, by an even greater margin, the benchmark for efficient performance among premium sports cars.

Intelligent efficiency: Electrical system recuperation, thermal management, coasting
To increase efficiency, the boxer engines feature electrical system recuperation and map-controlled cooling water thermal management.These measures alone reduce fuel consumption based on the NEDC by 0.45 l/100 km. But it doesn't stop there: Porsche is introducing the auto start/stop function for all transmission variants in the new 911 Carrera generation - including for the manual transmission. The occasional short interruptions are having a big effect: the automatic engine cut-off when the vehicle is stationary is saving 0.6 litres of fuel for each 100 kilometres driven based on the NEDC.

The principle of only drawing on engine power when it is actually needed has resulted in a new sports car function in the new 911 Carrera with PDK transmission: coasting. In principle, coasting is nothing other than the car rolling along without power, and as a result you can achieve fuel consumption for a limited distance equivalent to when the engine is idling. In practice that means fuel savings of up to one litre per 100 kilometres with a forward-thinking driving style in everyday driving.

Sound Symposer for even more intense acoustic driving fun
The new Porsche 911 Carrera generation offers the driver even sportier driving pleasure, sound-wise as well. And that not just with the top down: the Sound Symposer, featured as standard in both models, ensures an even meatier and sportier engine sound in the interior and is controlled by means of the Sport button, featured as standard.

In 1963, Porsche presented the original model to the public. Since this first announcement - initially as the type 901 - the 911 has excited automotive fans across the globe. Porsche will unveil the limited edition model to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 911 at the IAA in Frankfurt, which opens its doors to the public on 12 September, 2013.


The Porsche is celebrating a special anniversary of the 911 sports car at the 2013 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt with a commemorative 50 Years Edition - half a century since the iconic coupé made its debut in the German city. Appropriately, the special model will be limited to 1,963 cars.

Like the first coupé, the Porsche 911 50 Years Edition combines a distinctive silhouette with a rear-mounted, flat-six engine and rear wheel drive. Yet its efficient performance, active sports suspension and exclusive body styling add contemporary appeal. Over seven successive generations, the Porsche 911 continues to resolve apparent contradictions - such as between tradition and innovation and performance and efficiency - andhas become renowned as the quintessential benchmark sports car.

The special anniversary 911 is based on the 911 Carrera S, but is clothed in the wider body - 44 mm broader across the rear wheel arches - that is typically reserved for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models. The unique exterior styling is combined with features that have contributed to the 50-year success story of the car. For example, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), with special tuning to complement the increased track width, adds to the exceptional cornering dynamics. The car also features a sports exhaust system for increased emotional character.

Powered by a 400 hp 3.8-litre flat-six engine, the 911 50 Years Edition sprints from 0-62 mph [0-100 km/h] in 4.5 seconds (4.3 secs with PDK) and can reach a top speed of 186 mph [300 km/h] (185 mph [298 km/h] with PDK). The NEDC Combined fuel consumption is 29.7 mpg [9.5 l/100km] (32.5 mpg [8.7 l/100km] with PDK), which equates to CO2 emissions of 224 g/km (205 g/km with PDK).

Giving a clear indication to the rear-mounted location of the flat-six power plant are bespoke chrome strips on the fins of the engine compartment grille. These are complemented with special trims on the front air inlets, and in a strip across the car between the rear lights. A further contemporary interpretation of 911 leitmotifs are the unique five-spoke cast alloy wheels whose style has been inspired by the so-called 'Fuchs' wheels, a legendary rim that was in fact a Porsche design and first fitted to the 911 in 1966. The new 20-inch diameter wheels are finished in matt black paint with machine-polished centres.

Two unique colours are available for this anniversary 911; a darker Graphite Grey and a lighter Geyser Grey metallic. Black is also available. Each of the cars has a '911 50' badge finished in two-tone 3D-style on the rear lid, which is repeated in three-colour embroidery on the head restraints and as a two-colour logo on the rev counter and the aluminium door sill plates. It is also displayed on the passenger side fascia strip together with the limited edition number of the individual vehicle.

Other exterior characteristics of the special model are high-gloss window frames and SportDesign exterior mirrors. A technical highlight is the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), which adds a dynamic cornering function to the already standard-fit Bi-Xenon headlights.

The inside, there are further styling touches reminiscent of the original 911 such as green labelling on the instruments with white pointer needles and silver caps on the instrument pivot pins. Another special feature are the centre panels of the leather seats, which are designed with a fabric pattern that evokes the 'Pepita' tartan design from the 1960s. The leather interior can be specified in Agate Grey or Black with decorative stitching. Sports seats with 14-way adjustment are standard, with 18-way Sport Seats Plus available as an option. The gear shift or selector lever - which, like the decorative panels on the dashboard, doors and centre console, is trimmed in brushed aluminium - comes from the Porsche Exclusive custom tailoring programme.

In the UK and Ireland the Porsche 911 50 Years Edition is priced from £92,257, in Germany at 121,119 EUR, and in the US at $124,100, not including a $950 destination charge.

The new generation Porsche 911 Carrera is emerging from one of the biggest development steps in the long history of this classic sports car. Almost 90 per cent of all components have been redesigned or redeveloped. With its all-new lightweight body, further drivetrain efficiencies and new suspension systems, the Coupé offers the driver improved Porsche Intelligent Performance. This manifests itself in yet further enhanced driving dynamics, up to 16 per cent lower fuel consumption and emissions combined with even greater everyday practicality.

The Porsche 911 Carrera's design and proportions have developed in step with the technology. One of the most pronounced points of differentiation is the 100 millimetre (3.94 inch) longer wheelbase.The body on the other hand is only 56 millimetres (2.20 inch) longer overall lengthwise, the overhangs being shortened by 32 millimetres (1.26 inch) at the front and twelve millimetres (0.47 inch) at the rear. The Carrera's roof line is around seven millimetres lower than that of its predecessor and around six millimetres for the Carrera S. The maximum headroom remains virtually unchanged. For Coupés with a sunroof, which for the first time is of the electric slide/tilt type, headroom has even increased by 15 millimetres. With an overall length of just under 4.5 metres (176.81 inch) and a maximum width of approximately 1.8 metres (71.18 inch) the 911 Carrera remains the most compact sports car in its class.

The Porsche 911 Carrera's stylistic evolution is apparent from every angle. Viewed from the side, new styling, larger alloy wheels and the more convex windscreen contribute to the even jauntier, more coupé-like character. Typical of the revised, wider front end are the new headlights and larger side air intakes. The wider, variably extending rear spoiler emphasises the new 911 Carrera models' greater power output. Together with other aerodynamic optimisations, it also ensures significantly lower lift while retaining an equally good cd value. Redesigned, narrower LED technology rear lights complete the rear profile.

The Porsche 911 Carrera sets new standards in Porsche Intelligent Performance. The innovative aluminium-steel lightweight body, combined with a raft of new components and functions, benefits efficiency and driving dynamics in equal measure.

The new 911 Carrera is the first passenger car in the world to feature a seven-speed manual transmission as standard. It is based on the module of the optional seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK). The close ratio of the first six gears affords the driver outstanding acceleration capability, with the seventh gear's quasi overdrive attributes offering further scope for fuel economy.

The Porsche 911 Carrera is the first sports car that Porsche has equipped with an auto start/stop function. The system can save up to 0.6 litres per 100 kilometres based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The auto stop/start function is married with both the PDK and manual transmission as standard. The joint thermal management system for engine and transmission and on-board electrical system recuperation reduce the new 911 generation's fuel consumption by a further 0.35 l/100 km. As the new cooling design dispenses with ventilation openings in the underbody, it also affords aerodynamic advantages, which are of benefit to performance.

The "sailing" function, making its very first appearance in a sports car with the optional PDK transmission, can save up to one litre of fuel for every 100 kilometres in everyday driving. If the driver takes his foot off the accelerator, depending on the driving situation, the engine is disengaged from the transmission; the 911 Carrera continues on its way with the engine idling. Especially at higher speeds, this function taps additional potential fuel economies.

In the Porsche 911 Carrera, optimised fuel consumption is complemented by Porsche-style downsizing: The 3.4-litre engine delivers more power from a smaller displacement than its predecessor with a displacement of 3.6 litres. That means the Porsche 911 Carrera with PDK is the first Porsche sports car to make it below the 200 g/km CO2 emissions threshold.

With its completely revamped suspension featuring numerous redeveloped components, the Porsche 911 Carrera raises the driving dynamics bar yet another notch. The longer wheelbase alone, combined with the wider track width at the front, generates an entirely different geometry with more sure-footed tracking and roll stability at high longitudinal and cornering speeds.

With the new electro-mechanical power steering, the Porsche engineers managed to develop a system that combines Porsche's trademark precision and feedback with superior consumption and comfort for the very first time. As the system only requires power when steering, the electro-mechanical system saves at least 0.1 litres per 100 kilometres.

The new active Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), available for the Carrera S as an optional extra, expands the lateral dynamics boundaries yet again by a sizeable margin. PDCC is an active roll compensation system that detects the very instant the vehicle begins to roll when cornering, eliminating it almost entirely. The system makes for greater agility in every speed regime, improved cornering and stable load change behaviour. PDCC therefore represents a new highlight in terms of driving dynamics.

Making its debut in the Porsche 911 Carrera S, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), featured as standard, ensures even better tracking and tracking stability, together with reduced sensitivity to load changes. Together with a seven-speed manual transmission, this system comprises a mechanical rear differential lock and variable torque distribution to the rear axle. In vehicles fitted with the Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), the even higher-performance PTV Plus comes with the electronically controlled, fully variable, rear differential lock. PTV or PTV Plus further improves agility and steering precision by means of selective braking interventions applied to the inside rear wheel. PTV and PTV Plus are also available for the 911 Carrera as an optional extra.

To complement the Porsche 911 Carrera's new exterior, the Porsche designers created an interior, the architecture of which takes its cue from the Porsche Carrera GT. The driver is now even more closely integrated with the cockpit thanks to the centre console rising up to the front with the high-mounted gear lever or gear selector located especially close to the steering wheel in typical motorsport fashion. The most important function and settings buttons for operating the vehicle are grouped in logical clusters on the centre console. Centrally located in the completely redeveloped dashboard, a larger seven-inch touch screen is used to control a rich array of functions. Naturally, the classic, established Porsche touches, such as the five round instruments with the centrally located rev counter and the ignition lock to the left of the steering wheel are also to be found in the new model. Also, both driver and front passenger are seated on newly developed sports seats with electric four-way adjustment. Additional sports seat versions with 14 and 18-way adjustment are also available as an option.

Porsche is proud to present the new Porsche 911 Carrera, a completely new generation of the iconic coupe that has been acclaimed as one of the world's benchmark sports cars since its launch in 1963.

Tradition meets modernity
True to the 911 tradition, the distinctive Porsche design language exudes power and elegance. The unmistakable silhouette still catches the eye while incorporating new, exciting contours and precisely designed details; a 100mm longer wheelbase for improved stability and greater interior space; front and rear overhangs are shorter, maintaining the compact footprint that has been a longstanding 911 attribute; the sporting stance is emphasised by the lower roof line and a wider front track increases on-road presence further still while raising the renowned chassis dynamics.

The rear-mounted, flat six cylinder engine is an equally symbolic component of the 911 identity; and behind the rear axle of the new car lies an uprated range of powerful, efficient and evocative 'boxer' engines. The Porsche 911 Carrera is powered by a new 3.4-litre engine developing 350 hp, and the Carrera S features a 400 hp version of the familiar 3.8-litre. These new engines offer performance improvements for both models. The 3.4-litre Carrera with PDK accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.6 sec, 0.1 sec quicker than the prior model. Pressing the Sport Plus button on the optional Sport Chrono Pack cuts that to 4.4 sec. The 3.8-litre Carrera S with PDK can accelerate from 0- 62 mph in 4.3 sec (Sport Plus 4.1 sec), 0.2sec quicker than its predecessor.

All-new lightweight body
Principle among the innovative steps forwards is the all-new, lightweight body, featuring intelligent aluminium-steel composite construction. It is responsible for a significant proportion of the vehicle weight reduction of up to 45 kg. The body structure also delivers significantly greater rigidity, and aerodynamic optimisation - including a wider, variably extending rear spoiler - has reduced the lift generated by the new 911 Carrera while retaining an impressive overall drag factor.

Innovative chassis technology
That the new 911 offers better acceleration in a straight line goes without saying, but it also offers top performance at an unprecedented level across the entire dynamic repertoire. In addition to the longer wheelbase, the greater agility, precision and driving stability are based, among other things, on the wider front track, a new rear axle and new electro-mechanical power steering.

Depending on the model, there are other standard or optional active control systems available as well that further enhance the driving dynamics. That is especially true for the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active roll stabilisation system, available for the first time on the Porsche 911 Carrera S. The system reduces body roll when cornering, with the result that the tyres are always in the optimal position relative to the road surface and thus able to transmit higher lateral forces. Consequently, maximum cornering speeds are increased, and even faster lap times on racing circuits are possible.

Exterior design
The familiar athletic appearance of the 911 is given further dynamism with a 100mm longer wheelbase, reduced height, and up to 20-inch diameter alloy wheels. At the same time, the typically compact exterior dimensions have been retained. Seen from the front, the eye is drawn to the trademark wide-arched wings, emphasising the wider front track and making the new 911 Carrera models adopt a particularly sporting stance on the road. The redesigned exterior mirrors are now mounted on the upper edge of the door and not as before on the mirror triangle. Not only is this aerodynamically advantageous, it also emphasises the new design line and visual impression of width.

Interior design
To complement the modern exterior, the Porsche designers created an interior style which takes its cue from that of the Porsche Carrera GT. The driver is now even more closely integrated with the cockpit thanks to the centre console rising up to the front with the high-mounted shift lever - or PDK gear selector - located close to the steering wheel in typical motorsport fashion. Classic Porsche style elements are also to be found inside, just as they are on the outside. For example, the instrument cluster with five round instruments, with the central dial naturally the rev counter. On the right is a new, high resolution multi-function screen, just one of the comfort features added to meet evolving customer demands.

Porsche Intelligent Performance
Setting the standard in its class, as it has for generations, the new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S raise the performance and efficiency standard to new levels. Fuel consumption and emissions of all versions are up to 16 per cent lower compared with its predecessors. Among other things, this is achieved by systems and functions such as auto start/stop, thermal management, electrical system recuperation, the world's first seven-speed manual transmission and - in conjunction with the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) - a 'coasting' function that decouples the engine for enhanced fuel efficiency when the throttle is closed.

The new electro-mechanical power steering system offers not only the typical precision and feedback expected of a Porsche, but also helps to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. For example, the Porsche 911 Carrera with the new 350 hp (257 kW) 3.4-litre direct injection engine and optional PDK returns 34.4mpg Combined based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) - 6mpg less than its predecessor. Also, at 194 g/km CO2, it is the first Porsche sports car to sit below 200 g/km CO2. In the case of the Carrera S, with its 400 hp 3.8-litre direct injection engine, economy when paired with the optional PDK is increased by 14 per cent, or 5 mpg, to 32.4mpg Combined despite 15 hp more power. That equates to CO2 emissions of 205 g/km.

Evidently, it has therefore been possible in the new 911 Carrera to extend yet further the span of apparently contradictory attributes such as performance and efficiency, sportiness and everyday usability that has always typified the Porsche 911. It could be said that the new 911 Carrera is thus more of a 911 than ever.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera celebrates its world premiere at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show and the new 911 models will be in UK Porsche Centres from December 17 2011.

The sky's the limit now for driving fun with the new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet which follows the Coupé introducing the superior attributes of the new generation 911 in the open-top sports car market segment. What the Coupé began with the new aluminium-steel body, the Cabriolet continues with the all-new, unique hood: intelligent lightweight design, even including the use of magnesium in the hood, ensures less weight and more sportiness, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort.

The new Cabriolets are the 911s with emotional appeal. With the top down, they convey a unique abundance of intense driving impressions between outstanding performance and calm comfort. This is based on the light, stiff body in conjunction with the long wheelbase. Reduced weight and a longer wheelbase compared with the predecessor generation are complemented by the wider front track and larger wheels. In terms of its performance, the new 911 Cabrio raises the bar not by an inch but by a yard. This is down to a precisely synchronised package of new and enhanced systems. Electro-mechanical power steering and, in the case of the Carrera S, Porsche Torque Vectoring with differential lock are featured as standard - in conjunction with PDK even regulated. If so desired, the new 911 Carrera ups the ante in driving dynamics terms with options such as PDCC roll stabilisation.

With the open-top 911s as well, Porsche has managed to reverse the weight spiral and make the new Cabrio models significantly lighter than their predecessors, by up to 60 kilograms depending on equipment. As a result, for the same engine output, the new 911 Carrera generation combines enhanced performance with significantly lower fuel consumption - in short "Porsche Intelligent Performance".

Innovative lightweight roof with Coupé characteristics
The attention-getter with the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet is the unique and all-new panel bow top. Thanks to the innovative technology, it has been possible for the first time to achieve the previously unachievable Coupé-like roof curvature of the closed fabric top, which offers aerodynamic advantages into the bargain. Moreover, the weight of the entire top remains on a par with the predecessor model, notwithstanding the increased length and signifi cantly enhanced comfort. The top can be opened and closed in approximately 13 seconds respectively - as in the case of the predecessor up to a speed of 50 km/h. It is operated by means of a button on the centre console or, from the outside, by means of the remote control.

Porsche has traditionally set the highest standards for the 911 top. That is why the new folding roof as well - as with every previous 911 - is a completely standalone development. The first distinctive feature is apparent at a glance: the fabric roof is tensioned in an elegant arc from the front window frame to the convertible top compartment with styling that is almost identical to that of the Coupé. No roof bows are discernible under the fabric nor are there any sections that interrupt the flowing design. Even the heatable rear window is virtually flush-fitting thanks to a new technique and is integrated with the cover with only the most discreet of seams.

Porsche new development: lightweight magnesium panel bow top
Critical to this shape, previously unachievable with fabric tops, is the innovative design as a panel bow top. This entails the entire fabric top - with the exception of the side panels - being tensioned over a rigid roof surface comprising four directly abutting individual segments. The four elements are the front roof frame, two panel bows and the rear window, the frame of which is made of magnesium, like the other segments. A large proportion of the frame guides are also made of this very light material; only the lateral guides, the drive levers and the rear tension bow are of aluminium. All frame components are kinematically linked so that only one hydraulic cylinder is required on each side to move the top. When it comes to closing the top, Porsche relies on a refinement of the tried and tested, centrallylocated, electric central locking mechanism, which is supported by lateral centering pins.

The panel bows and top are not locked together so that the four magnesium segments can dovetail one on top of the other when the top is opening whereas the fabric top is stowed using the tried and tested Z-folding technique. Thanks to this unique concept, the roof package comprising the fabric top, roof frame, panel bows and rear window requires only minimal stowage space of approximately 23 centimetres in height and around 55 centimetres in length when in the open position. Whereas the front section of the top remains visible when the top is open, the sickle-shaped flap covers the rear section - as before. Unlike the predecessor model, this significantly enlarged convertible top compartment lid now extends as far as the spoiler. This does away with the need for a body joint, with the rear looking even more elegant as a consequence.

With the top closed, the occupants enjoy a level of climate and noise comfort that comes closer to that of the Coupé than ever before. For example, the exterior material is underlaid over its entire area with an insulating mat. On the inside, the roof segments are covered with dimensionally stable roof linings that convey a comfortable interior feeling. The side panels as well are entirely clad with fabric so that with the hood closed, no technical components are visible any longer. The headroom as well is also broadly the same as inside the Coupé.

New: fully integrated electric wind deflector
A further innovation in the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet is the built-in electric wind deflector. That makes fitting and removal a thing of the past. The new wind deflector is attached to a U-shaped tensioning bracket, which is fully integrated into the rear area when retracted, thereby not encroaching on the available space on the rear seats. At the push of a button, this bracket deploys within two seconds, in the process unrolling a mesh that is tensioned at right angles by a second movable deflection bracket behind the front seat armrests. The wind deflector can be deployed up to a speed of 120 km/h. The effect is equivalent to that in the predecessor model, ensuring that draughts are eliminated to a very large extent and that wind noise is minimal when the top is open. A deployed wind deflector is automatically retracted when the top is closed.

Latest generation adaptive rear spoiler
The Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet adopted the Coupé's variable spoiler concept albeit with modified parameters. With the top closed, the spoiler settings are the same as those of the Coupé, as the new top generates an almost identical airflow. Unlike when the top is open, in which case the spoiler assumes specifically developed positions. Depending on the vehicle configuration, the spoiler also extends to different heights and at different angles. Additionally, a flow element located on the leading edge of the spoiler is controlled by means of a special pivoting kinematic mechanism, ensuring optimal airflow over the spoiler blade. The spoiler is extended automatically at 120 km/h and retracted at 80 km/h but can also be extended below these speed limits at the push of a button.

cd = 0.30: Cabriolet with exemplary aerodynamics
The basic building blocks of the aerodynamic concept for the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet are the streamlined surface of the body, the new top, the variable rear spoiler and the cooling system, which requires no large air intakes on the underside of the vehicle and therefore makes possible a largely smooth vehicle floor. Optimised air intake and air outlet cross sections also improve the guidance of the cooling air so that despite the cooling system that has been upgraded to cope with the enhanced engine and braking performance, the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet's exemplary cd of 0.30 - with the top closed - remains unchanged.

Open-top lightweight 911 with new design language
The Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet's design echoes its predecessor's styling while developing an entirely new design language: thanks to a longer wheelbase combined with shorter overhangs, the vehicle makes a compact, made to measure impression. A vehicle height reduced by a further four millimetres (three millimetres in the case of the 911 Carrera S) compared with the 911 Carrera Coupé strikes a distinctly sporty tone in outward appearance. As a result of the 52 millimetre wider front track compared with the predecessor, the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet has an even more solid stance on the road. The vehicle's 61 millimetre greater width at the front creates an even more harmonious vehicle silhouette. Larger air intakes underneath the redeveloped front lights emphasise the striking appearance. Together with the new Bi-Xenon headlights, they give the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet a distinctive face.

The rear end echoes the sporty looks of the car's front end. It is characterised in particular by the new wider rear spoiler below the engine lid air intakes. The outer edge of the lid is part of the continuous design edge, which cleverly emphasises the vehicle's width. The compact dimensions of the redeveloped top system when stowed enabled the space above the engine to be used to best effect. The result: an elegantly flat and harmonious rear section.

Body: even stiffer and up to 60 kilograms lighter
The innovative lightweight body of the 911 Carrera family was redesigned from the ground up for Coupé and Cabriolet alike. That means that the open-top 911 and fixed-roof model share both the weight advantages of the aluminium-steel body and the significantly improved rigidity, complemented by local reinforcement elements. A continuous side impact support strut made of square ultra high-strength steel is fitted between the B-pillars. The side panel is also reinforced with ultra high-strength components, for example in the form of door sill reinforcements and reinforcement pits as well as stabilising components in the A and B-pillars. It was possible to improve dynamic torsional rigidity, which has a critical influence on comfort, by 18 per cent in the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet models.

The underlying idea of the intelligent lightweight design concept is using the right material in the right place. Notwithstanding the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet's increased dimensions, all the measures as a whole were able to deliver significant weight reductions compared with the predecessor models.

New roll-over protection system also increases rigidity
Less weight and greater rigidity compared with the predecessor generation means greater safety in addition to further improvements in driving dynamics and efficiency. Here too the open top 911 Carrera continues to be exemplary. For example, the automatic roll-over protection system was completely redesigned based on the tried and tested system. Whereas previously individual roll hoops were screwed onto an aluminium subframe, the new open top 911 features a compact, self-supporting gantry made of welded and high-strength aluminium profiles. This made it possible to reduce both space and weight requirements. Because of its high component rigidity, the supporting frame is also used to strengthen the body. It contributes to torsional rigidity by means of diagonal struts extending to the B-pillar and the convertible top stowage compartment.

In the event of an impending rollover, two newly developed sections located behind the rear seats are deployed by means of a pyrotechnically actuated spring mechanism. If the top is in the closed position, a carbide metal pin on each of the two roll hoops penetrates the safety glass of the rear window. Accidental triggering is practically impossible because sensing and actuation and constant monitoring is provided by the highly accurate airbag control device with built-in rollover sensor.

High degree of passenger protection for all types of accident
In the event of a crash in a longitudinal or lateral direction, the external forces are spread across longitudinal and lateral beams in the front and rear of the car in a predefined way. Ultra high-strength steels are used to ensure high rigidity, optimal deformability and energy absorption. They surround the passenger cell like a cage and by their extreme dimensio nal stability contribute critically to preserving the interior and thus to passenger protection. It goes without saying that as a result of the coordinated deformation behaviour of the aluminium luggage compartment lid and wings and of the aluminium-steel hinges, the intelligent lightweight design also complies with the ever more stringent global requirements as regards pedestrian protection.

The exemplary passenger protection in the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet is complemented on the front seats by two-stage full-size airbags, head airbags built into the door panels (POSIP) and thorax side airbags as well as Isofix/top tether anchors on the rear seats. An Isofix system for attaching child seats on the front passenger seat is available as an option.

Porsche Intelligent Performance: more power, exemplary low fuel consumption
The production models of the open-top 911 traditionally have the same engines as the Coupés. This has not changed with the new generation. But in return the differences with the predecessor models have become all the greater: developed in accordance with the principle of Porsche Intelligent Performance, fuel consumption fell and output increased. Courtesy of enhancements within the engine itself, accompanied by the new functions thermal management, on-board electrical system recuperation and auto start/stop function, the new models are up to 15 per cent more economical and up to 15 hp more powerful. In short: even as a Cabriolet, the 911 Carrera remains, by an even greater margin, the benchmark for efficient performance among premium sports cars.

The previous engines and transmissions were an outstanding starting point for these efficiency-raising concepts. Porsche's first venture into downsizing within a model range was the flat-six engine in the 911 Carrera, reducing the piston stroke by four millimetres with the total displacement falling from 3.6 to 3.4 litres. The dimensions of the 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine in the Carrera S remained unchanged.

Both engines feature direct fuel injection, variable intake valve timing and valve lift switching (VarioCam Plus) and breathe through an especially flow-optimised and thus efficiency-enhanced intake manifold. The air filter as well has been optimised to offer less flow resistance. In the 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine of the 911 Carrera S, a controlled resonance flap further improves the charge level, thus providing high torque at low revs and an even torque curve.

The transmissions: seven speeds for dynamics and efficiency
The strategy for more efficient performance is continued with two transmissions combining uncompromising sportiness with fuel-economising, long gear ratios: the world's first sevengear manual transmission in a passenger vehicle and the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), also with seven gears. Drivers of the manual transmission 911 Carrera as well can now sample the delights of the fuel consumption benefits for which the PDK is renowned: up to 19 per cent lower revs for the same speed and thus up to ten per cent lower fuel consumption at constant speed. A peculiarity of the new manual transmission is the shift gate lock to the seventh gear. It prevents the driver from unintentionally getting into the shift gate slot for the seventh gear during sporty driving, when he fast upchanges from fourth to fifth gear.

Intelligent efficiency: electrical system recuperation, thermal management, coasting
To increase efficiency, the boxer engines feature electrical system recuperation and mapcontrolled cooling water thermal management. In terms of electrical system recuperation, the battery is primarily charged during the braking or coasting phases. Reducing the generator charging current with a full battery in turn reduces the load on the combustion engine in acceleration phases as the combustion engine does not have to sacrifice so much power for charging the battery. Thanks to the intelligently managed cooling system shared by both engine and transmission, both of them reach their operating temperatures more quickly, meaning better combustion under partial load with less friction. The aforementioned measures alone reduce fuel consumption measured by the NEDC by 0.45 l/100 km. But it doesn't stop there: Porsche is introducing the auto start/stop function for all transmission variants in the new 911 Carrera generation - including for the manual transmission. The occasional short interruptions are having a big effect: the automatic engine cut-off when the vehicle is stationary is saving 0.6 litres of fuel for each 100 kilometres driven based on the NEDC.

The principle of only drawing on engine power when it is actually needed has resulted in a new sports car function in the new 911 Carrera with PDK transmission: coasting. In principle, coasting is nothing other than the car rolling along without power, and as a result you can achieve fuel consumption for a limited distance equivalent to when the engine is idling. In practice that means fuel savings of up to one litre per 100 kilometres with a forward-thinking driving style in everyday driving. Coasting is initiated by slowly taking one's foot off the accelerator or by manually changing up if the highest gear is already engaged. Coasting is ended by accelerating, braking or by manually changing gear. Coasting is better for fuel consumption because it enables the vehicle to harness its kinetic energy and convert it into distance covered.

Sound Symposer for even more intense acoustic driving fun
The new Porsche 911 Carrera generation offers the driver even sportier driving pleasure, sound-wise as well. And that not just with the top down: the Sound Symposer, featured as standard in both models, ensures an even meatier and sportier engine sound in the interior and is controlled by means of the Sport button, featured as standard.

The Sound Symposer is a passive system, creating not an artificial engine sound but directing the new boxer engines' distinctive sound into the vehicle interior at the push of a button. This is done by an acoustic channel picking up the intake vibrations between the throttle valve and air filter. The acoustic channel incorporates a membrane that transmits the vibrations into the interior in the area of the rear window shelf. A controllable valve located in front of the membrane enables the Sound Symposer to be activated or deactivated by means of the sport button, as the driver wishes.
