Bugatti Veyron Jean Bugatti, 2013

Bugatti Veyron Jean Bugatti, 2013

The technology in the Bugatti Legend Edition "Jean Bugatti" is based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, whose 8-litre W16 engine generates an enormous 1,200 PS and an unparalleled 1,500 Nm torque at 3,000 to 5,000 rpm, and which can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds.
With its "Jean Bugatti" Legend model, Bugatti pays homage to a prominent figure in 20th century automotive history. Gianoberto Carlo Rembrandt Ettore Bugatti, known as Jean, was the eldest son of Ettore Bugatti and the most gifted of his four children. From the late 1920s onwards, Jean used his own structural and design ideas to exert more and more influence over the development of the company located in Molsheim, Alsace. In 1936, he took over as head of the company at the age of 27. By the time of his tragic accidental death in 1939, Jean had secured his place in automotive history thanks to his pioneering engine and chassis designs and concepts for vehicle bodies.

The successful launch of its "Les Légendes de Bugatti" (Bugatti Legends) series at 2013 Pebble Beach in California, Bugatti presents the second vehicle in this exclusive edition as a world premiere at the 2013 International Motor Show in Frankfurt. The French luxury car manufacturer intends the Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse "Jean Bugatti" to be a celebration of the oldest son of company founder Ettore Bugatti and his most famous creation, the Type 57SC Atlantic. Like all other five models in the Legend series, the "Jean Bugatti" is limited to three vehicles. It costs 2.28 million euros (plus tax and other charges).

One of the most extraordinary designs created by Jean Bugatti has to be the Type 57SC Atlantic, one of the most exclusive and exceptional sport coupés ever built and ranking among the most expensive vintage cars in the world. The Legend vehicle to be unveiled in Frankfurt is a call back to La Voiture Noire ('The Black Car'), an Atlantic model which was driven by Jean Bugatti himself and has been lost since the Second World War.

Design
For the first time ever, the Bugatti horseshoe sparkles in precious platinum.

In developing the Jean Bugatti Legend Edition, the designers at Bugatti aimed to follow the concept of its historic predecessor, the Type 57SC Atlantic La Voiture Noire, as closely as possible.

Exterior
The body of the Jean Bugatti Vitesse Legend Edition is constructed entirely from jet black, clear-coated carbon fibre, making it the embodiment of elegance and the apex of technical engineering. The use of platinum lends an air of extravagance to the vehicle, with the famous Bugatti horseshoe on the front grille and the EB logo on the rear taking on a resplendent appearance. Bugatti is using this precious material for the very first time on the exterior of one of its modern models.

The vehicle's elegant, minimalist appearance is further punctuated by its wheels, which feature black diamond-cut rims.

In reference to the Legend Edition's namesake, the signature of Jean Bugatti has been lasered onto the petrol and oil cap and painted Arctic grey.

Interior
The designers also took care to adhere to the motif of the historic La Voiture Noire as much as possible for the interior of the Vitesse Jean Bugatti Legend Edition. As such, it has been fully fitted out in leather. The Vitesse will also feature the same beige and brown tones that were present in the Type 57SC Atlantic. The seats, instrument panel, steering wheel, dash panel, centre console, door trim panels and windscreen crossmember are all rendered in chocolate brown.

As in the original vehicle, the chocolate brown is contrasted against the leather upholstery in a light beige silk colour across the extended centre console. This upholstery is continued in the footwell, the outer door trim panels and the handle recesses. The colour of the decorative stitching in the vehicle has been selected to complement the leather used.

The intricate, particularly eye-catching embroidery on the doors and the cover of the rear storage compartment once again harks back to the vehicle's legendary predecessor, given that the side silhouette of the Type 57SC was embroidered onto the chocolate brown doors using contrasting beige silk thread. From a bird's eye view, the Atlantic's silhouette is immortalised using brown thread for decorative stitching on the rear beige-coloured storage compartment.

The results of this passion for detail and the desire to use the finest materials throughout the engineering process can be observed in the interior's steering wheel as well - as for the exterior of the vehicle, the EB logo has been styled in gleaming platinum. Also staying true to the original Type 57SC is the selector lever, which is rendered in valuable rosewood.

Additional specific Legend Edition features in the vehicle include a leather insert embossed with the lettering "Les Légendes de Bugatti" in the extended section of the centre console, and door sill plate displaying the likeness and signature of Jean Bugatti.

A historic predecessor: the "Voiture Noire"
Just four Type 57SC Atlantic vehicles in total were built between 1936 and 1938. Only two of these vehicles still exist today in their original condition. The Atlantic is the most famous version of the Type 57. At the time, Jean Bugatti wanted to offer a motorsport version of the standard model, thereby resulting in production of the SC version (SC stands for supercharged).

Jean Bugatti, whose skill in developing unique body designs was already proven by the Type 41 Royale, Type 55 Roadster and Type 50, was responsible for the shape and style of the Atlantic, which was intended to be extremely light and aerodynamic. Aluminium was the material chosen, giving the Atlantic its unmistakable design feature - a clearly accentuated dorsal seam which runs at a right angle from the windscreen to the rear bumper and effectively welds the two halves of the aluminium body together. This element continues to play a fundamental role in vehicles designed by Bugatti even today. As the floor of the vehicle sits between the longitudinal chassis members rather than on the frame itself, this means that the wheels are offset from the body and accentuated by enormous wings, thereby providing the car with a footwell. Seen from above, the extremely long bonnet flows to the rear of the vehicle in an oval shape, further highlighting the graceful and elegant design of the Atlantic.

The sport coupé was equipped with a straight-eight engine with 3,257 cm³ displacement, which produced 200 PS. However, even though it was able to reach speeds of over 200 km/h at the time, it was never entered into a race.

The specific Atlantic which served as the godfather of the Jean Bugatti Legend Edition is the legendary La Voiture Noire, which was the first of four vehicles produced in total. It belonged to Bugatti and was lost in transit amid the confusion of World War Two. The location and circumstances surrounding its disappearance are still shrouded in mystery.

Brabus B63S-700 6x6, 2013

  •  Brabus B63S-700 6x6, 2013

The innovative Brabus lighting concept sets further visual signals. It includes dark-tinted LED lights integrated into the front spoiler edges. Even more dominant are the black Brabus xenon headlights and daytime running lights with integrated turn-signal function for all current models of the venerable off-roader. The now obsolete production turn signals on top of the fenders are replaced with clear-coated matt carbon-fiber covers. In conjunction with the matt carbon-fiber structure on the hood and the carbon-fiber shells for the exterior mirrors they round out the belligerent 6x6 look to full effect.

2 wheels more than normal, plus power in abundance as is the norm for Brabus: in the Brabus B63S-700 6x6 a particularly exclusive power off-roader based on the Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 celebrates its world premiere at the 2013 IAA in Frankfurt/Main.

The Brabus lends the most exclusive G-Class of all times even more punch: powered by a 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo with Brabus B63S-700 engine tuning producing 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp), the six-wheel drive powerhouse weighing in at around four tons sprints from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.4 seconds. The top speed is limited electronically to 160 km/h (100 mph) due to the 37-inch off-road tires.

As a contrast to the striking black, chrome and carbon-fiber Brabus exterior, the Brabus interior designers picked a fiery red Mastik leather/Alcantara interior.

The Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 built in small-series production comes normally with a 5.5-liter eight-cylinder four-valve Biturbo engine producing 400 kW / 544 hp (536 bhp). Brabus can draw upon the world's most extensive engine tuning program for Mercedes-Benz automobiles in the case of this special model as well.

The Brabus B63S-700 performance kit, which is also available for all other current Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG SUVs, unleashes the inherent power slumbering in the turbocharged V8 engine. To realize the enormous power increase by 115 kW / 156 hp (154 bhp) the peripherals of the V8 are modified extensively.

The production turbochargers are replaced by two special Brabus turbochargers with larger compressor unit, which produce a higher boost pressure. Brabus Gold Heat Reflection sheathing for the intake and charge-air pipes further lower the charge-air temperature. This measure contributes equally to the power yield and to the flawless durability, which also manifests itself in the Brabus Tuning Warranty of three years, up to 100,000 kilometers/62,000 miles (see Brabus Warranty Terms and Conditions, updated July 2013) that is unparalleled in the industry.

Special high-performance metal catalysts with 75-mm (2.9 in.) downpipes are installed to lower the back pressure. The stainless-steel sport exhaust system with controlled butterfly valve was custom-developed for the G63 6x6 AMG and offers both optimized power yield and active control of the exhaust note. Drivers can select at the push of a button between the subtle "Coming Home" mode and a markedly potent exhaust note in the "Sport" position. The Brabus exhaust system also puts its visual stamp on both sides of the vehicles with two striking dual sidepipes.

Specially calibrated Brabus mapping for the engine management system coordinates the perfect interaction of all high-performance components while also ensuring compliance with the stringent Euro V emission standards.

With these major modifications the B63S-700 engine, which is also available for the G63 AMG 4x4 model, produces 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp) at a low 5,300 rpm. The Brabus engine also delivers a much heftier torque: between 2,000 rpm and 4,500 rpm the engine sends a massive 960 Nm (708 lb-ft) of torque instead of the standard 760 Nm (561 lb-ft) to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. This is complemented by special Brabus aluminum shift paddles that facilitate manual gearshifts from the multifunction steering wheel of the G-Class. The high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner Motul.

The equipped the six-wheeled heavyweight turns in an acceleration performance that can measure up to full-blooded sports cars. 7.4 seconds for 0 - 100 km/h (62 mph) are absolute tops for a vehicle weighing in at just less than four tons. The heavy-duty off-road tires the 6x6 is equipped with necessitate limiting the top speed to 160 km/h (100 mph).

Brabus also gives the 6x6 a strategic visual upgrade. The imposing nature of the front is further strengthened by purposeful modifications. The Brabus front spoiler edges attach to the production fascia and are combined with an additional molding below the special radiator grille with integrated Brabus logo. The Brabus carbon-fiber hood scoop adds another striking highlight. The mirror-polished Brabus underride guard provides an interesting contrast to the all-black paintwork.

Other focus of the Brabus refinement for the mightiest G model ever is in the cockpit. The company upholstery shop meticulously crafted an exclusive Brabus fine leather ambiance from a combination of fiery red and black leather and Alcantara.

The great love of detail and the quality of the upholsterers' craftsmanship is evident in the pinpoint precision of the topstitching of the leather floor and the headliner. The passengers are welcomed by stainless-steel scuff plates with backlit Brabus logo. The Brabus interior designers add some pronounced accents with aluminum components such as pedals and door-lock pins.

BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo, 2014

  •  BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo, 2014
The eye-catching features of the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo are a powerfully formed front end, an elegantly stretched silhouette with coupe-style roofline, frameless side windows and a flowing rear end with large load aperture. Here, an extended rear spoiler - the first of its type on a BMW - provides visual lightness as well as reducing lift at touring speeds. The clear increase in length over the Sedan and Touring benefits not only the car's elegant silhouette, but also the amount of space available on board.

The new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo represents a high-calibre addition to the premium reaches of the mid-size segment. This new concept performs a genuinely unique role within the successful BMW 3-Series range and provides a fresh and distinctive take on aesthetic appeal, space and functionality. The BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo fuses the dynamic sporting attributes of the 3-Series Sedan with the practicality and versatility of the 3-Series Touring, and backs these qualities up with a palpable increase in space and long-distance comfort. The new addition to the range exudes aesthetic and emotional appeal, boasts a distinctive presence on the road and offers similarly pronounced driving pleasure.

Ease of access, a raised seating position offering an outstanding view out to all sides and luxurious expanses of space around every passenger provide an instant feel-good factor. The Gran Turismo offers more room in the rear compartment in particular. Indeed, passengers in the three full-size rear seats will encounter legroom normally only found in luxury-class cars.

The broad range of qualities - both functional and aesthetic - allows the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo to tick all the right boxes for active and demanding drivers who use their car in a variety of ways but would also value the aesthetic appeal of a coupe. All of which allows the new Gran Turismo to make a compelling case for itself as both an elegant business carriage and a dynamic, comfortable tourer for family trips away and leisure activities.

Design: Innovative, emotional and practical.
The first impression delivered by the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo invariably centres on the striking combination of dynamic and aesthetic appeal. Attractive proportions, four doors with frameless windows, the coupe-style, gently falling roofline and large tailgate define the distinctive character it has chiselled for itself within the BMW 3-Series ranks. Powerful lines and taut surfaces sketch out an athletic body which lends the car an actively forward-surging purpose, as well as suggesting a high degree of functionality. Indeed, the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo sets new standards inside as well as out. A convincing sense of roominess, a high seating position, generous levels of space and intelligent load area management seal its status as a one-off in the premium mid-size segment.

At 4,824 millimetres long, 1,489 millimetres tall, 1,828 millimetres wide and with a 2,920-millimetre wheelbase, the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo is notably larger all round than the Sedan and Touring variants of the 3-Series range. However, the designers' clever use of proportions, surfaces and lines ensures that the Gran Turismo appears to cut a similarly low-slung and dynamic figure as its siblings. Its dimensions allow it to lay on impressive levels of space for passengers and their luggage, as a result of which it passes the "long-distance comfort" test with flying colours. At 520 litres, its boot capacity is up 25 litres on the BMW 3-Series Touring's, while an extra 70 millimetres of rear legroom place it between the BMW 5-Series and BMW 7-Series, i.e. firmly in luxury class territory.

Front view: powerful dynamics.
The eye-catching front end of the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo makes no secret of its BMW 3-Series family ties, but also brings its own individual flavour into the mix. The broad, powerful BMW kidney grille and modified front apron underline the car's sporting character, while striking twin headlights with corona rings (if xenon headlights are specified) and LED accent lights form a visual unit with the slightly forward-slanting kidneys and reinforce the sense of both width and presence. The silhouette of the headlights is larger than on the Sedan. Large air intakes below the headlights emphasise the sporting character of the car, as do the aerodynamically motivated apertures for the Air Curtains. The bonnet, meanwhile, has smoother contours than the Sedan and Touring. The most prominent design cue remains the kidney grille, which draws the visual focus of the front end further towards the road and gives the car a lower-slung and sportier feel. Another identifying feature of the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismoare the "blades" set into the outer air intakes of the front apron.

Side view: elegance with a coupe-style roofline.
The link between the front and rear of the BMW 3-Series GT is particularly seamless. Hallmark BMW proportions and a coupe-style roofline sloping down towards the rear stretch the car's silhouette, while powerfully taut surfaces and rising lines lend the flanks their inherent dynamic verve. The smooth transition of the roofline into the rear creates extra interior space while showcasing the car's enviable functionality. The BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo is the brand's first-ever model to sport an active rear spoiler. At lower speeds it retracts virtually out of sight, leaving barely a ripple in the coupe-style roofline. One feature that is most definitely visible from the side are the forward-surging kidney slats, which dart up into the bonnet, underlining the agile character of the Gran Turismo.

The dominant theme of the car's flanks is the double swage line, made up of two character lines running alongside each other, which is central to the appearance of the latest BMW 3-Series. Viewed in tandem with the pronounced door sill line it strengthens the body's dynamic wedge shape. The high-set side window graphic, which rises slightly at the Hofmeister kink, lends pleasingly aesthetic emphasis to the clear forward orientation of the exterior design. A new element of the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo comes in the form of the Air Breathers. Located just rearwards of the front wheels, they are designed to reduce drag around the wheel arches. The Air Breathers team up with the Air Curtains to underline the sporting character of the car's design and provide tangible evidence of the innovative aerodynamic solutions devised by BMW as part of its BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy.

Rear view: a powerful tail end with compelling functionality.
The rear of the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo is highlighted by horizontal surfaces and lines emphasising muscular width and unshakable roadholding. The wraparound section below the spoiler has an extremely flat appearance and visually lowers the stance of the rear. The interplay between light and shadowed surfaces generates a dynamism even when the car is stationary.

The extended rear lights, in customary BMW L-shaped design, stretch far into the sides of the car, add further presence to the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo's powerful breadth and make the car appear lower to the road. Two integrated bars of LEDs allow a slim light design and ensure the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo's distinctive appearance is maintained both day and night. The large tailgate, meanwhile, showcases the versatility and functionality of the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo. It allows optimum access to the load area and, thanks to its wide, generously sized aperture, makes it easier to load and unload even bulky items.

Interior: surprising spaciousness, generous freedom of movement.
"The focus of the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo's interior is clearly on the rear compartment - here we wanted to create a totally new, spacious yet also cocooning ambience." Georg Allmendinger, interior designer for the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo.

The new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo adds 200 millimetres to the length of the BMW 3-Series Touring and has a 110-millimetre longer wheelbase. The new model variant also stands 81 millimetres taller. These generous dimensions create a luxurious feeling of space for the passengers and ensure unbeatable freedom of movement in every seat. The front and rear passengers all benefit from a seating position raised by 59 millimetres, which allows an outstanding view out and makes entry and exit significantly easier. The Gran Turismo also raises headroom another notch.

Space-loving elegance with lounge-style character.
Rear passengers enjoy a particularly impressive increase in space. Indeed, the Gran Turismo offers a full 70 millimetres of extra legroom in the rear, providing a freedom of movement normally only found in luxury-class cars. Thanks to the car's longer wheelbase - and a reduced overlap with the rear wheel arches as a result - the full breadth of the rear seat bench can be used without restriction and three adults can be seated in comfort. This supreme feeling of space is complemented by the design forms, colour scheme and materials employed in the interior. The flowing lines of the door panels link the front and rear compartments into a single stylistic unit, while the interplay of the flat roofline and frameless windows with the cocooning character of the interior creates a spacious lounge-style ambience in the rear compartment, and thus the ideal environment for relaxed touring.

Maximum long-distance comfort.
An array of storage compartments and other practical details helps lay on a suitably sumptuous level of long-distance comfort. A pair of cupholders are integrated into the centre console, but can be swapped for an oddments tray if desired. And large door pockets front and rear can accommodate up to one-litre drinks bottles (0.75 l in the rear). The BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo can be adapted precisely to meet changing requirements. To this end, the rear seat backrests are fitted with folding head restraints and can be split 40:20:40 as standard, allowing the load area to be increased in stages from 520 up to 1,600 litres. Folding down only the central segment creates a large through-loading aperture that enables four people to bring several pairs of skis or snowboards on board with them. Folding down all the backrests, meanwhile, creates a slightly rising, almost level and flush-fitting load compartment floor.

Load area: large, practical and versatile.
The perceived value and functionality of the generously sized load area in the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo impress in equal measure. The gaping 1,120 x 618-millimetre (width x height) load aperture and high-opening electric tailgate make it easier to load up bulky items. Another extremely practical feature is the cargo function for the rear seat backrests. The tilt angle of the backrests can be adjusted through 15 stages and 19 degrees and even brought into a vertical position if required. This allows the space available in the load compartment to be adapted to changing requirements, a process aided by the smooth panel surfaces of the load area's side walls. Another example of the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo's practical qualities is the two-piece parcel shelf. The larger segment opens with the tailgate, facilitating access to the load area. The second segment remains on its railing, allowing smaller items to be left in place even when the tailgate is opened. When not in use the sections can be easily removed and stored away neatly under the load compartment floor. The new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo is fitted as standard with button-controlled electric tailgate activation, but the options list also includes the Smart Opener (part of the Comfort Access option), which allows the boot lid to be opened hands-free with a movement of the foot under the rear bumper.

Four lashing points in the load compartment floor and a multifunction hook in the left-hand side panel are on hand for securing loads, while a multifunction storage tray under the load compartment floor and a deep compartment in the left-hand side panel swallow up all kinds of small items. Also located here is a 12-volt power socket to plug in a cool box or charge electrically-powered devices. The optional storage package, meanwhile, ups the comfort rating another notch when it comes to transporting both people and loads. In addition to an array of interior features, it also comprises handy extras for the load compartment. These include a remote release function for the rear seat backrests, a gas pressure spring for the load compartment floor, a sliding retaining net on the right-hand side panel, an additional strap for holding loads in place and a variable attachment system using two rails integrated into the load compartment floor.

Typical BMW 3-Series: functional elegance in the cockpit as well.
The cockpit of the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo fits the same template as the new 3-Series Sedan and new 3-Series Touring. In customary fashion, the driver-focused layout ensures optimum access to all driving functions. Crystal clear circular instruments with a black-panel display and a freestanding iDrive monitor in contemporary flatscreen design underline the sense of functional elegance. The iDrive Controller - within easy reach on the centre console - and the optionally fore-and-aft sliding/folding armrest between the front seats underscore the cabin's exceptional usability and comfort. Descriptions of additional equipment features, such as the full-colour Head-Up Display and cutting-edge convenience-enhancing and driver assistance systems, can be found in the "BMW ConnectedDrive" chapter.

  •  Bentley Continental GT V8 S, 2014

The new GT V8 S coupe returns a combined cycle fuel economy of 26.8 mpg (10.6 l/100km) and CO2 emissions of 246 g/km. The equivalent figures for the convertible are 25.9 mpg (10.9 l/100km) and 254 g/km.

The high-technology V8 engine also features high pressure direct injection, low friction bearings, advanced thermal management, energy recuperation via the electrical charging system and innovative turbocharger packaging for greater efficiency.

The appeal of the world's most stylish, luxury grand tourer is enhanced with the introduction of the new, sporting Bentley Continental GT V8 S. Available as both a coupe and convertible, the new GT V8 S models bring added excitement to the Continental range with lowered and retuned sports suspension, sharper steering, dramatic 'S' signature styling cues and a distinctive soundtrack from the uprated V8 engine.

These two new models expand the Continental family and provide an even more engaging driving experience from Bentley's already renowned 4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrain. The new Bentley Continental GT V8 S Coupe and Convertible will be unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Show.

Commenting on the introduction of the two new S models, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors, said: "The Bentley Continental is the definitive grand tourer. Its effortless performance, generous space, handcrafted luxury and all-wheel drive capability take you on a journey in refined style and comfort. Now, for those customers who want even more drama and excitement, the sharper, sporting edge of the new GT V8 S adds a new dimension to the Continental range."

More power, more performance, and a range of 500 miles on a single tank
Building on the success of the acclaimed Continental GT V8, the new GT V8 S models feature a more powerful version of Bentley's high-efficiency 4-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine developing 521 bhp (528 PS / 389 KW) at 6,000 rev/min and an immense peak torque of 680 Nm (502 lb.ft) at a mere 1,700 rev/min.

Delivered via a close-ratio ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, the increased power provides effortless, exhilarating high performance with breath-taking acceleration and imperceptibly smooth power delivery. Switch into S mode via the gear selector and the V8 S rewards the spirited driver with a sharpened throttle response while gears are held for longer with faster shifts.

The GT V8 S coupe dispatches the 0-60 mph sprint in just 4.3 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.5s) onto a top speed of 192 mph (309 km/h). The performance of the GT V8 S convertible is equally impressive, reaching 60 mph from a standing start in 4.5 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.7s) and a top speed of 191mph (308km/h).

The increased performance is achieved without detriment to the V8 engine's class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions, or its ability to cover more than 500 miles (805 km) between fill-ups.

The impressive combination of power, performance and economy is the result of an array of advanced technologies employed in the design of the Bentley V8 engine. Variable displacement, in which four of the eight cylinders shut down when cruising, reduces fuel consumption without any loss of refinement. When more power is required, the engine switches back automatically and seamlessly to the full eight cylinders.

The V8 engine's variable displacement system presented a unique challenge for Bentley exhaust engineers. When cruising on a light throttle in 4-cylinder mode, the exhaust system is tuned for refinement while maintaining a distinctive V8 sound. However, under acceleration the character of the system changes dramatically as the twin turbo-charged Bentley V8 transforms into an emotive growl.

A more agile, responsive and involving driving experience
The power and performance of the GT V8 S models are complemented by a range of chassis enhancements which deliver greater agility and a more involving driving experience without compromising the Continental's legendary ride comfort.

The GT V8 S retains the aluminium double-wishbone front and trapezoidal multi-link rear self-levelling air suspension with continuous damping control that is common to all Continental models. For the GT V8 S, there is a more sporting setup with subtly different tunes for Coupe and Convertible. Lowered sports suspension (by 10 mm) is complemented by increased spring rates (45% front, 33% rear) and revised damping for a more engaging and responsive drive. Bush stiffnesses are increased by up to 70%, while the rear anti-roll bar is stiffened by 54% over the standard GT V8 models for improved body control and turn-in. A recalibrated steering system completes the new chassis system, offering both improved precision and feedback through changes to static toe and camber and new software.

Careful recalibration of the Continuous Damping Control (CDC) system ensures minimal degradation in ride comfort despite the gains in handling performance.

The Electronic Stability Control is also optimised for the GT V8 S. The retuned system allows increased wheel slip at higher speeds with engine torque reinstated more quickly after a system intervention. This provides the spirited driver more opportunity to exploit the full potential of the uprated chassis and increased power.

The Lower Body Styling Specification - front splitter, side sills and rear diffuser - benefit aerodynamics by reducing front-end lift and provide greater stability at higher road speeds.

Shared with all Continental models, the all-wheel drive system employs an advanced Torsen differential and a 40:60 rear-biased power split. This ensures the delivery of safe yet dynamic handling in all road conditions.

Distinctive sporting design cues
While the elegant coachwork of the Bentley Continental GT is inspired by iconic Bentleys of the past, its modern, sculpted design, with crisp, highly defined feature lines, is formed using advanced body construction techniques, achieving class-leading standards of quality and body integrity.

For the new 'S models, the design of the Continental takes a more dramatic direction and its enhanced road presence is clear before a wheel is turned. The lowered suspension provides a more sleek and purposeful stance, complemented by unique, lower-body styling including a sharp front splitter, discrete side sills and subtle rear diffuser finished in Beluga gloss. The black gloss radiator grille with single chrome divider bar and 'figure of eight' exhaust tail pipes instantly signify the powerful V8 engine.

The signature 20-inch wheels are unique to the 'S' models with an open-spoke design that reveals distinctive, red-painted brake calipers. Subtle 'V8 S' badges are applied to each front fender, and as with the other members of the Continental V8 family, the famous Bentley Wings badges feature a red centre.

In common with the Continental GT W12, the GT V8 S models are available in the full palette of 17 paint colours, of which seven vibrant hues are specifically recommended by Bentley Design to match the sporting character of the new model. Of these, two shades (Kingfisher Blue and the new Monaco Yellow) are signature colours for the GT V8 S.

Hand-crafted contemporary luxury
The cabin of the Continental GT is renowned for its supreme luxury with soft-touch leathers, wood veneers, polished metals and deep-pile carpeting, hand-crafted in Bentley's unrivalled workshops at the factory in Crewe, England.

The cabin of the 'S' models presents a thoroughly modern interpretation of Bentley luxury in which colour and tone offer further appeal to the senses.

Available with a range of striking duo-tone interiors, customers may also select from the full range of seventeen hide colours. The GT V8 S coupe also features a unique contrast centre-stripe for the hide-trimmed roof lining, matched to the colour of the main hide. Contrast stitching throughout, including to the steering wheel, is also available as an option.

Knurled chrome detailing to the gearshift lever and ventilation controls provide a perfect contrast to the Piano Black veneers which are sanded and lacquered up to 18 times to produce a truly flawless finish. Discreet 'V8 S' badges are displayed on each sill tread plate.

As with all Continental models, the 'S' models include advanced infotainment technology as standard, including an 8-inch touchscreen which displays the car's navigation, audio and telephone systems as well as the ride and comfort settings for the air suspension, all complemented by a 30GB on-board hard drive.

Tailoring the specification
Customers may tailor the specification of the GT V8 S by selecting from a range of optional equipment.

The sports exhaust option features redesigned silencers, revised pipe architecture and re-tuned mountings which result in a free-breathing system that delivers a full-blooded V8 sound track.

The optional Mulliner Driving Specification features 21-inch 7-spoke Black Edition wheels, drilled alloy foot pedals, a 'jewel' filler cap and a cabin trimmed in diamond-quilted, perforated leather with indented headlining. Other key options include Mulliner dark - tint front and rear lights and Beluga gloss door mirrors to match the Lower Body Styling Specification.

Deliveries of the new Bentley Continental V8 S start in early 2014.

Sporty, elegant and multi-faceted - Audi presents the new A3 Cabriolet. The compact four-seater impresses at first glance with its flowing lines and soft top. It is also at the top of its class technically - with systematic lightweight design, new engines, multi-faceted networking and high-performance assistance systems.

The Exterior design
The new Audi A3 Cabriolet has grown compared to the previous model: its length increased from 4.24 to 4.42 meters (13.91 to 14.50 ft), its wheelbase from 2.58 to 2.60 meters (8.46 to 8.53 ft) and its width from 1.77 to 1.79 meters (5.81 to 5.87 ft). Only its height (1.41 meters [4.63 ft]) was reduced by 15 millimeters (0.59 in). This gives the four-seat convertible a more elegant and sporty look on the road. Luggage capacity grew by 60 liters (2.12 cubic ft), and it is easier to load. The wheel housings can handle wheels up to 19 inches in size.

The front of the Audi A3 Cabriolet is characterized by the Singleframe radiator grille. The flat headlights give it a resolute look; they emphasize the horizontal styling and the air intakes in the bumper. Audi offers headlights with LED technology as an option; they are the only LED headlights in the compact segment to offer variable headlight leveling control.

The rear overhang plays a key role in the harmonious proportions of the two-door car. The windshield frame is made of aluminum - and an aluminum-look trim strip runs around the entire car. On the flanks, the design features a taut tornado line and contoured sheet metal surfaces that create a fascinating interplay of light and shadow.

The soft top
The new A3 Cabriolet has a soft cloth top that is stretched over a lightweight kinematic mechanism made of magnesium-steel, and it complements the car's design perfectly. At the press of a button, the top opens or closes electro-hydraulically in less than 18 seconds, even while driving up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). In the opened state, the top - folded into three layers - rests in a tray that barely affects luggage capacity, which is 287 liters (10.14 cubic ft).

The fully automatic soft top has a glass rear window and is offered in Black as standard. A fully automatic acoustic top is available as an alternative; it has a thicker inner foam layer which reduces the already low interior noise level of the Audi A3 Cabriolet even more. The acoustic top is available in the three exterior colors of Black, Gray and Brown, and its roofliner is available in black and lunar silver. A wind deflector is standard for the Ambiente trim line, and head-level heating is an option for the front seats. An active rollover protection system protects the occupants in case of a rollover accident. It consists of two spring-loaded plates that are recessed into the body.

Body
In the base version, the car's curb weight is just 1,365 kilograms (3009.31 lb) - the new Audi A3 Cabriolet is around 50 kilograms (110.23 lb) lighter than the previous model despite its larger size and better comfort. Including its special reinforcements, which deliver high torsional stiffness, the body-in-white weighs 30 kilograms (66.14 lb) less than previously; the engine hood is made of aluminum. Weight was also significantly reduced in the interior and in the engines. This let Audi - a pioneer in this technical field - set an impressive best value in the compact class. Customers can choose from 16 different exterior paints for the body.

The Interior
Elegantly drawn lines and clean surfaces also typify the interior design of the new Audi A3 Cabriolet. The instrument panel is lean and low, its front is slightly curved, and the center console is angled slightly towards the driver. The large, round air vents in jet design, the control panel for the air conditioner and the three-dimensional trim strips bring premium class elegance into the interior. The optional lighting package includes a touch-sensitive switch for the reading lights - a feature being offered for the first time.

As in every Audi, workmanship quality is uncompromisingly high, and the car's controls are simple, intuitive and convenient. It offers enough space for four adults, and the seatbacks of the two rear seats can be folded down which opens up a wide through-load area. The steering wheel and seats are new designs, and the also new electro-mechanical parking brake is operated by a pushbutton on the center console.

The trim lines are named Attraction, Ambition and Ambiente. The S line sport package for the Ambition line immerses the interior space entirely in black. Customers can choose cloth, leather or Alcantara/leather upholstery materials. The Audi design selection lasso brown conveys an exclusive look.

Assistance systems
Driving in the new Audi A3 Cabriolet is even more impressive with its highly developed assistance systems. The driver information system with efficiency program and attention assist are already standard features on the Ambition and Ambiente lines. The options program includes adaptive cruise control, Audi side assist, Audi active lane assist, camera-based traffic sign recognition, park assist with selective display and various feature levels of the Audi pre sense safety system.

Also extremely attractive is the line-up of infotainment components; at the very top are the Bang & Olufsen sound system and MMI Navigation plus. The super-slender seven-inch monitor extends from the instrument panel electrically. The user terminal has a rotary/push button control that is designed as a touchwheel with MMI touch - the touchwheel's top surface is a touch-sensitive pad for inputting alpha and numeric characters.

The Audi connect concept aims to network the driver with his or her environment. In the new Audi A3 Cabriolet, this function - which supplements MMI Navigation plus - provides a connection to the Internet, and whenever possible via the fast LTE transmission standard. The integrated WLAN hotspot lets passengers use their mobile devices to surf and e-mail freely.

The system brings Internet services from Audi connect into the car for use by the driver - from navigation with Google Earth images and Google Street View to online traffic information and services such as Facebook and Twitter. The latest service from Audi connect is parking information; it shows available parking spaces in parking and underground garages and parking lots.

Drivetrain
The three newly developed engines being offered in the Audi A3 Cabriolet at its launch all emphasize the car's sporty character. The two TFSI engines produce 103 kW (140 hp) and 132 kW (180 hp) from 1.4 and 1.8 liters of engine displacement, respectively. The 2.0 TDI develops 110 kW (150 hp); Other engines will follow - ranging from the 1.6 TDI with 81 kW (110 hp) to the 2.0 TFSI, which will power the Audi S3 Cabriolet with 221 kW (300 hp). All engines in the new Audi A3 Cabriolet combine the technologies of direct injection, turbocharging and a start-stop-system.

On average, the three engines offered at market launch have twelve percent better fuel economy than the engines in the previous model - and they do so while improving driving performance. The 1.4 TFSI, for example, accelerates the new Audi A3 Cabriolet from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 9.1 seconds, yet its combined fuel consumption value is 5.0 liters fuel per 100 kilometers (47.04 US mpg) and its CO2 emissions are 114 g/km (183.47 g/mile). Also contributing to this efficiency is Audi cylinder on demand (COD) technology, which deactivates two of the engine's cylinders in low load conditions.

The new Audi A3 Cabriolet also features state-of-the-art technology in power transmission. At its launch, the 1.8 TFSI is being offered with a seven-speed S tronic; together with the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system, it offers a free-wheeling function that further improves fuel economy. The 1.4 TFSI and 2.0 TDI are each paired with a manual six-speed transmission. This will be followed by the quattro all-wheel drive system - another new feature and USP of the compact Cabriolet.

Chassis
The chassis of the new Audi A3 Cabriolet impresses with sophisticated technology that delivers sporty handling, superior vehicle safety and a high level of comfort. Some of the components of the MacPherson front suspension are made of aluminum; the four-link rear suspension handles longitudinal and transverse forces separately. The power steering system features an efficient electromechanical drive.

The ESC stabilization control system integrates an electronic limited slip differential - this makes handling even smoother and safer at the vehicle's cornering limits while driving fast through curves. The brakes are powerful and durable. Wheel sizes range from 16 to 19 inches, and tire sizes range up to 235/35. Two versions of the sporty chassis are offered; the sport suspension lowers the body 15 millimeters (0.59 in), while the S line sport suspension is 25 millimeters (0.98 in) lower.

High-end options in the new Audi A3 Cabriolet include the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system (standard on the Ambition line). The driver can use this system to modify engine management, power steering, S tronic and air conditioning operation over several modes. This control also extends to optional systems such as the adaptive suspension control system Audi magnetic ride, adaptive cruise control, adaptive light and progressive steering whose steering gear ratio becomes increasingly more direct when turning.

The new Audi A3 Cabriolet will come off the assembly line at Audi's plant in Gyor, Hungary, which Audi has expanded with an investment of more than 900 million euros. Sales begin this autumn in Germany, and first deliveries will be in the first quarter of 2014. The base price for the 1.4 TFSI (103 kW with cylinder on demand technology) is 31,700 euros. Many sporty and comfort/convenience options round out the standard features; they include the deluxe key and S sport seats with integrated head restraints and diamond topstitching in the shoulder area.

Audi S3 Cabriolet (preliminary data)
In the top S3 version, which will follow shortly after the car's initial launch, the compact Cabriolet delivers very sporty driving performance. The 2.0 TFSI engine produces 221 kW (300 hp) and transfers 380 Nm (280.27 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft. With a six-speed S tronic, the car completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.4 seconds. The combined fuel consumption of the four-cylinder turbo is 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers (33.13 US mpg).

The quattro drivetrain operates with an electronically-controlled hydraulic multi-plate coupling. The body was lowered 25 millimeters (0.98 in), and 17-inch brakes are mounted behind the 18-inch wheels. 19-inch wheels are also available in conjunction with Audi magnetic ride. Progressive steering is standard.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta, 2014

  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta, 2014

Uconnect with 5" or 6.5" RadioNav touchscreen
Designed to enrich the driving experience and perfectly integrated in the design of the car, the innovative Uconnect multimedia device is available with a 5" or 6.5" touch-screen with satellite navigation system and voice commands for easy control of several multimedia sources and outputs. The Uconnect system lets you access all the main functions, from the analogue and digital radio (DAB) - in markets where the optional is sold - through to all the main multimedia resources (mediaplayer, iPod, iPhone, smartphone) which can be connected via USB port or Aux-in socket.

The system also includes an advanced Bluetooth interface to access extra functions, such as phone call management or reading received SMS text messages via text-to-speech technology, innovative Audio Streaming system that reproduces music files and web radio stations directly from a smartphone in streaming via Bluetooth on the UConnect device. Finally, with the Uconnect Nav with 6.5" touch-screen, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014 customer can rely on the satellite navigation function with 3D bird's eye view maps and progressive route guidance or the text-to-speech function for entering the destination address using voice commands.

Renewed style, new engines and more technological content to continue playing its starring role. The new Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014 will contribute to consolidating the outstanding sales performance the model has obtained so far: from in mid-2010 to date, more than 212,000 units have been ordered worldwide.

New 150 HP 2.0 JTDM 2 engine
The new 150 HP 2.0 JTDM engine is making its first appearance with the 2014 range. It is equipped with the second-generation MultiJet injection system that both optimises engine combustion in all operating conditions and ensures reduction in fuel consumption and noise at the same time.

Using a small-sized turbocharger means delivering the highest torque in the segment at low rpm (380 Nm at 1750 rpm) and maximum running flexibility.

The heart of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014 2.0 JTDM 2 engine is without a doubt the third generation Common Rail injection system that uses innovative injectors able to control the amount of diesel injected into the combustion chamber with utmost precision with a particularly quick and flexible injection sequence thanks to the balanced hydraulic servo valve.

More in detail, up to eight injections per stroke are possible together with strategies that optimise the increasingly advanced combustion, such as the Injection Rate Shaping (IRS) system which involves two consecutive injections so close together in time as to generate a continuous and modulated fuel supply into the cylinders. In this way the combustion process is improved, all to the benefit of quieter operation and particulate and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Furthermore, the new injection system is even simpler and more reliable because the injectors have a simpler structure with 40% fewer components.

The Exterior
Moonlight Pearl, Anodizzato Blue and Bronze: three new liveries to enhance the dynamic lines of a model that is a blend of sportiness and elegance. The new look of the front grille and the chrome-plated frame of the foglights renew its front. This is the starting point for the design of the entire car, which combines an energetic personality with a distinctly elegant form. The front headlights have DRL with LED technology and a day light function for maximum active safety. The innovative rear lights use LED technology in the same way, which serves not only a stylish purpose but also preventive safety.

The three new alloy wheels (16'', 17'' and 18'') clearly highlight the profile of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014. The side windows recall the appearance of a coupé and emphasise the dynamism and fluidity of the shapes, thanks also the concealed rear door handles. The ribs on the vehicle sides elongate the car while the clean lines which end at the rear accentuate the angular shape of the car body.

The Interior
Attention to detail and high quality materials chosen to represent the ultimate expression of Italian style. What particularly stand out are a new door panel and handle and the brand new insert on the central console and dashboard. All elements are treated with uniform scratch-proof paint and the trims are homogeneous in colour and materials. The result is a superior quality environment that welcomes passengers into a warm and enveloping atmosphere. The seats and steering wheel are new, too, and further highlight the perceived quality and on-board comfort.

In particular, making their début on the Quadrifoglio Verde version are the new specific sports seats upholstered in black leather/Alcantara with contrasting stitching with electro-welded logo on the backrest (also available on the QV Sportiva Pack).

Now the Progression version offers the black/anthracite grey fabric, while the Giulietta MY 2014 Distinctive customer can choose between two colour combinations for the fabric upholstery: black/tobacco or anthracite grey. The Exclusive version comes with leather/fabric upholstery that can be in the shade of either black/anthracite grey or tobacco/anthracite grey. All the upholstery is available in top quality leather in the shades of red, tobacco or black on request.

Sporty design and a new form which refers to the Alfa Romeo grille also for the steering wheel, now characterised by a aluminium insert, black, white or red stitching - depending on the interiors and trim levels - and an upholstery in top quality leather made with special foam that ensures a safe and immediate grip. Finally, the luggage compartment has been renewed with a specific black trim for the entire volume (bottom, sides and behind the rear seats). The storage compartment on the left of the steering wheel, the upper glove compartment on the dashboard and the USB port starting from today placed close to the DNA selector - so its use is more convenient and immediate - complete the new features inside the Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014.

Driving satisfaction
Alfa Romeo Giulietta has assumed a place in the tradition of the best Alfa Romeo models, drawing on its heritage of dynamic performance, without compromising on efficiency and convenience in everyday use. The secret behind this performance is continuous technological research, which finds its utmost expression in the Giulietta. This is demonstrated by the "Compact" architecture - created with high-resistance materials which allowed the weight of the structure to be limited - in addition to the Dual Pinion active steering and the sophisticated suspension configurations (MacPherson at the front and the advanced Multilink at the rear). Furthermore, driving satisfaction and comfort adapt to meet every customer's specific needs thanks to the Alfa DNA selector, a device that customises the vehicle's behaviour to suit different road conditions and driving styles. The new architecture of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta was designed to integrate the vehicle's different systems and exploit them to the full, thus emphasising the three set-up functions (Dynamic, Normal and All Weather) available through the Alfa DNA selector. The device, fitted as standard on the entire range, is designed to modify the operating parameters of the engine, gearbox, steering system and Q2 electronic differential, in addition to the behaviour logic of the Electronic Stability Control system (ESC).

Comfort, passenger room and greater soundproofing
Outstanding quality of construction impressive on every level for an excellent standard of comfort. The longitudinal and vertical filtering capacity of the suspension ensures high driving comfort while important technical refinements - such as specific interventions on bumpers, wheel arch, pedal unit and luggage compartment - make the Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014 even quieter and more enjoyable to drive.

Comfort is another strong point: the quality of the materials used for the dashboard and the ergonomics of the interior space in general contribute to a great on-board experience. There hasn't been any compromise on load capacity either, thanks to a luggage compartment with a very regular shape which can be exploited to the full, with a width of 1023 mm between the wheel arches and a maximum capacity of 350 litres, in line with that of its main rivals.

Efficiency: the optimal performance to consumption-emissions ratio
The Giulietta's exceptional efficiency is confirmed by the excellent performance to consumption ratio, a value which is further increased by the latest-generation Alfa TCT twin dry clutch automatic transmission. The innovative transmission ensures greater efficiency and driving comfort and a sportier feeling than the automatic transmissions with torque converter. Suffice it to say that the Giulietta MY 2014 powered by the 170 HP 1.4 TB MultiAir with TCT achieves outstanding results in its segment, improving on the already impressive standard set by the manual gearbox both in acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h and fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The transmission works in either all-automatic or sequential mode. The "up and down" positions of the precise and ergonomic gear lever are managed manually by the driver, who can also choose to combine it with the "shift paddles" on the steering wheel. The driver can also customise his car's character using the Alfa DNA driving selector to enhance its features of comfort, performance, safety and efficiency.

Safety
Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014: one of the safest cars in its category that turns the tables for those who think that safety detracts from performance. In addition to the undisputed dynamic features of the model, all versions fit plenty of standard equipment, such as six airbags, ESP, three-point seat belts with double pretensioner, anti-whiplash system and third load line for excellent passenger compartment protection.

These are followed - again as standard - by certain systems which are unique in this category, such as Alfa DNA with electronic Q2 differential, the system which allows torque to be transferred to the outer wheel when cornering, to prevent understeer at the front, with benefits for the car in terms of traction, safety and driveability. And there's more: DST, which prompts drivers to correct their driving in the event of an emergency through impulses at the wheel. Finally, the Pre-fill system guarantees maximum promptness during emergency braking. All these features translate into an extremely high active and passive safety level. The Giulietta earned five stars in crash tests according to the stricter parameters introduced by Euro NCAP from its launch, scoring 97% for adult passenger protection, one of the highest scores in the category.

Range
5 trim levels (Impression, Progression, Distinctive, Exclusive and Quadrifoglio Verde) - depending on the countries where marketed - to offer safety, comfort and driving pleasure to the various Alfa Romeo Giulietta MY 2014 customers.

All the devices linked to active and passive safety are fitted as standard on the entire range. The standard equipment of the Impression trim level includes: 6 airbags, the Alfa DNA system (with Q2 electronic differential and DST), and the innovative ESC (including ASR and Hill Holder). The manual climate control system and tyre pressure monitoring sensor complete the standard equipment.

The second level, Progression, proves to be an ideal choice for those looking for more on-board comfort with the added rear electrical windows and CD/MP3 sound system with dual tuner function and controls on the steering wheel.

The Distinctive version adds: 16" alloy wheels, leather steering wheel with radio controls, fog lights, dual zone automatic climate control system, new seats upholstered with quality fabric, front armrest with storage compartment and the elegant chrome-plated insert (chrome line) that frames the side windows and refrigerated storage compartment.

The Exclusive trim level is at the top in terms of comfort and technology and offers: leather/fabric upholstery, 17" alloy wheels, rear armrest, lumbar front seat adjustment, electrically folding door mirrors, rear parking sensors, electrochromic rear view mirror and rain and dusk sensors.

The range is completed by the 235 HP Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1750 TBi Quadrifoglio Verde (four-leafed clover), a legendary symbol which has competed on tracks all over the world. Equipped exclusively with the highest-performing engine in the range, the version is distinguished by its thoroughbred sports design, combined with 17'' (optional 18'') wheels, guaranteeing segment-leading driving pleasure and surprisingly limited fuel consumption and emissions for this power rating. The Giulietta thus reinterprets the "Quadrifoglio Verde" with a modern touch, combining the utmost driving pleasure with greater environmental awareness for an eco-conscious and environmentally-friendly sportiness.

Packs
Style, Visibility, Comfort, Lusso, Premium, Business, Sport and QV Sportiva: many specific packs available depending on the market to further customise your Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV MY 2014. The QV Sportiva Pack is designed for customers who want a car with exciting performance, top-level technological equipment and great looks. Inspired by the legendary Quadrifoglio Verde, the QV Sportiva Pack includes: a sporty low ride, new 18" alloy wheels and 225/40 tyres, side skirts, oversized Brembo brakes with red calipers, dark finish headlights and rear Privacy windows. Volvo S60 R-Design, 2014

  •  Volvo S60 R-Design, 2014

Lower and firmer chassis
The R-Design Sport chassis has been lowered 15 mm compared with the Dynamic chassis in the standard S60 and V60, and the spring stiffness is 15 per cent higher compared with the dynamic chassis in the standard S60 and V60. This gives responsive driving pleasure with full control.

The new R-Design versions of Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 feature an outstanding blend of a renewed sports appearance, a dynamic driving-focused chassis and engine output up to a substantial 329 horsepower with the Polestar performance option.

Unique new front
All three R-Design cars - including the XC60 - now feature a unique face with a redesigned, dynamic, expressive nose. The frameless Tech Matte Black grille has high-gloss black stripes, a silk metal diagonal and a refined R-Designed emblem. The DRL lights in the outer corners reinforce the low, road-hugging impression.
At the rear, the unique diffuser with aero fins is flanked by the round, high-tech R-Design tailpipes.

New generation R-Design interior
The new sport seat come as standard in the R-Design cars. It features a blend of black nubuck textile and perforated leather. The embroidered R-design logo with a blue 'R' confirms the sporty aura. Full leather seats are available as an option.

The Adaptive Digital Display features the option to switch between three layouts with different configuration and functionality - Elegance, Eco and Performance. In the R-Design versions, the Elegance theme boasts a radiant blue colour.

The design team has dedicated much attention to all the interior details that emphasize the distinctive R-Design aura.

"By blending inlays with a perforated look, black leather and contrasting stitching, the design team has created an interior with all the details in perfect harmony, crowned by the black headliner. The new stainless steel tread plate with a bright blue 'R' in the R-Design emblem is another exquisite detail," says Doug Speck.

Sporty ride with up to 329 horsepower
R-Design models can be combined with all the engines available for the standard versions. The range spans from the D2 diesel with 115 horsepower (not available in the XC60) to the 3.0 litre, six cylinder T6 petrol turbo with 304 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque.

The T6 buyer can boost performance to 329 horsepower by opting for the Polestar software that charges the specially designed sport accelerator pedal with an extra 25 hp.

Quicker acceleration
Acceleration times in the T6 version, using the new paddle shift with the automatic gearbox in Sport mode, have been cut in all three cars with 0-100 km/h now down to 5.9 seconds (previously 6.1) in the S60 T6. The equivalent figure for the V60 T6 is 6.0 seconds (6.2), while the XC60 T6 now covers 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds (7.3).

Monotube dampers
The S60 and V60 R-Design features rear monotube dampers, delivering compression and return damping via the same valve. This gives shorter, faster fluid flow, which in turn means the damper responds more quickly.

Stiffer bushings counteract oscillation, and roll and movements are more controlled. The bushings that attach the rear dampers to the body are 20 per cent stiffer compared with the Dynamic chassis. The front tie-blade bushing is a substantial 400 per cent stiffer to counteract wheel bouncing and shaking.

A strut brace under the bonnet ties together the suspension strut towers to stiffen up the body structure.

The Volvo XC60 R-Design chassis is also stiffer than the standard car and has more dynamic driving properties - without compromising ride comfort. The shock absorber springs and anti-roll bars are adjusted and tuned to be firmer and more balanced. The result is improved control and a sportier, road-hugging drive.

Corner Traction Control
Just like in the standard variants, a range of electronic systems that sharpen the sporty driving experience backs up the chassis in the R-Design cars.

Corner Traction Control, which uses torque vectoring to provide smoother cornering, is now also standard on the XC60. The DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) system also has several other functions that improve driving and safety properties:
  • Advanced Stability Control. With a gyroscopic roll-angle sensor the anti-spin system can deploy faster and with greater precision.
  • Engine Drag Control prevents the wheels from losing their grip during engine braking on a slippery surface.
  • The DSTC system also has a sports setting that makes it possible for the driver to disable the anti-spin function.
Driver-orientated appeal
The new Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 R-Design will be available in all markets that sell the standard versions of these models. Volvo Cars expects that about 10 per cent of buyers will choose the R-Design version, but this increases to over 30 per cent in some markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia.
