  •  Fiat Viaggio, 2013

The all-new premium class Fiat Viaggio sedan's debut is without a doubt one of the eye-catchers at the 2012 Beijing International Auto Show. The Fiat Viaggio symbolises an ideal journey between Italy and China, and its Chinese name Fei Xiang reinforces the message, evoking the experience of a flying dream towards the discovery of a new lifestyle totally befitting the brand positioning La Vita è Bella (life is beautiful) which embodies the Italian philosophy of living life to the fullest with passion and style.

Design
Inspired by Italian design, the new Fiat Viaggio teams modern-day fashion elements with a note of lasting classics that add to the passionate Italian legend. Designed by Fiat Group's Style Centre in Turin, the Fiat Viaggio has a timeless, clean-surfaced expressive exterior design that blends fluid and curvaceous forms with strong proportions. A contemporary Fiat "face" ensures unmistakable brand identity. Rear tail lamps with refined LED lights deliver an image of superior quality.

The Fiat Viaggio is tastefully designed inside and out with discernible Italian style. Fiat designed the Viaggio to be a world compact sedan unlike any others in its segment. Equipped with the overall dimensions which are "lower, wider, and longer" inherited from the architecture and platform upon which it is based, the Fiat Viaggio affords a dynamic appeal tuned to bring class-leading ride and handling.

An extended C-pillar enables a sleek silhouette. The abundance of elegant chrome details (from the entry trim level) gives the Fiat Viaggio a highly sophisticated look.

The on-board experience is characterised by a "driver centric" interior design: a unique "floating island bezel" which combines the cluster and centre stack and helps distinguish the interior from others. No films, faux woods, or imitation metals: the dashboard boasts a clean, appliqué-free execution (featuring high-quality soft-touch surfacing with tactile grains in an elegant and warm dual tone (black/beige) cabin. Premium quality materials result in premium tactility. A balanced presence of chrome details and silver-plated elements add brightness and a touch of sophistication to the elegant dashboard. On top trim levels, the presence of the 8.4 inches touchscreen radio navigation unit adds to the sophisticated environment a top high-tech feature unique to the segment.

BMW 7-Series, 2013

  •  BMW 7-Series, 2013
The new BMW 7-Series is set to reinforce its position as the most innovative sedan in the luxury segment. The flagship model series of the BMW fleet embodies sporting elegance, refined powertrain technology and luxurious comfort in equal measure. And now, by making a clear step up in terms of product substance, the Sedan is set to underline its leadership. New LED headlights, an upgraded interior with optimised soundproofing, markedly improved ride comfort, a comprehensive selection of optional equipment and state-of-the-art safety technology combine to create an in-car experience from the top drawer. A line-up of either new or optimised drive systems, including the world's most powerful six-cylinder in-line diesel engine and the second-generation BMW Active Hybrid 7, set new performance and efficiency benchmarks.

Design: Stylish presence, unique equipment features, an unforgettable way to cover the miles
The BMW 7-Series meets the highest global standards when it comes to aesthetic appeal and innovative technology. In the luxury sedan segment it represents the epitome of athletic elegance and a supreme driving experience. The upgraded BMW 7-Series reaffirms its stylish presence and sporting prowess in 2012 through expressive new design features at the front and rear. Its dimensions have changed only marginally, but its eight-millimetre drop in overall height imbues its sweeping lines with extra expression and emphasises the perfect balance of the car's dynamic proportions.

All-new headlights sharpen the presence of the BMW 7-Series
From the front, the long, broad bonnet of the BMW 7-Series gives it an elegant and expressive profile. The precise contour lines of the bonnet draw the eye to the upright new BMW kidney grille as they extend forward. The grille's chrome surround is now larger, a change which - together with a new slat arrangement (nine slats instead of 12) - gives it greater prominence and reinforces the car's presence on the road. With their elegant accent strip and hallmark BMW corona rings, the optional new full-LED headlights accentuate the unmistakable appearance of the BMW 7-Series.

The large, full-width air intake dominating the lower section of the modified front apron is now split into three sections, a pair of chrome bars marking its outer sections and adding further depth to the car's sporty looks. Two narrow vertical air intakes sit beyond even the LED foglamps to the left and right of the wide intake. These are included as part of the "air curtain" technology, which lowers fuel consumption at higher speeds by forcing the air to flow more aerodynamically around the front wheels. The design of the air curtain therefore represents a fine technological advertisement for the BMW Efficient Dynamics strategy.

Hallmark BMW proportions, such as a long wheelbase, short front overhang, long, sweeping bonnet and set-back passenger compartment with a coupe-like roofline, define the sporting and elegant silhouette of the BMW 7-Series. A new design feature that stands out from the side is the indicator integrated into the lower section of each exterior mirror, which makes the car easier to see and therefore safer to drive.

The powerful rear of the BMW 7-Series exudes a feeling of sporting assurance. The horizontal lines and subdivision of the rear into several levels visually lowers the height of the car. The design of the brand's familiar L-shaped rear lights, linked by an eye-catching chrome strip, remains unchanged. They are, however, richer in contrast thanks to differing shades of red. A second, delicately sculpted chrome strip draws a visual connection between the two slim reflectors in the rear apron and gives the rear view a more exclusive and solid feel overall. Another slim chrome bar between the four chromed tailpipe embellishers in the rear apron is a distinguishing feature of the 12-cylinder flagship model.

Exclusive design for the new Rear Seat Entertainment package
The picture of stylish exclusivity and luxurious character is painted with equal clarity inside the new 7-Series. The interior possesses an undeniable air of quality and harmoniousness. Smoothly flowing forms, exquisite materials and stylish colour combinations determine the car's luxurious overall impression. Dakota leather and Nappa leather can now be ordered in Ivory White with the world colour Black and Veneto Beige with the world colour Veneto Beige. The outstanding build quality of the BMW 7-Series reflects the attention to detail of the car's creators, and evidence of the precise craftsmanship at work is striking.

A typical feature of BMW interiors is their unflinching focus on the driver - the way in which they gravitate ergonomically towards the person behind the wheel. In the new 7-Series, this includes the addition of newly designed, more slender front seats offering the best possible ergonomics, optimum lateral support and ultimate long-distance comfort. Sports seats and multifunction seats are also available in place of the standard items. The latter can be ordered with a folding table in the backrest or with the Rear Seat Entertainment package as an option. A brand-new feature are the 9.2-inch screens which, instead of being integrated into the front seats, appear to be "floating" on them. Their exclusive design takes its inspiration from the latest breed of flatscreen monitors, which gives them an extremely slight and lightweight look.

The new BMW 7-Series can be specified as an option with individual rear seats that can be adjusted to suit individual requirements. The backrest angle and seat position can both be varied, as can the position of the head restraints. The controls are the same as those for the front seats with memory function.

The long-wheelbase version of the BMW 7-Series provides the ideal platform on which to maximise long-distance comfort. All of the 140 millimetres added to the wheelbase of the standard-length 7-Series are used to lay on a calm and relaxed journey for the rear passengers in a first-class environment. Indeed, changes to the roofline of the long-wheelbase version create 10 millimetres of extra headroom in the rear.

Extending centre speaker adds to the audio experience
The optimum interior soundproofing of the BMW 7-Series takes the on-board experience another step towards perfection. Additional insulation materials in the B and C-pillars, skirts and boot area team up with intricate sealing around the window frames and exterior mirrors to minimise driving noise. All of which brings the sound experience generated by the new Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System even more powerfully to the fore. The 1,200-watt music system is hooked up to 16 speakers, some of which are positioned behind illuminated, satin-finish aluminium grilles sited in the mirror triangles of the doors and the parcel shelf. The most attention-seizing member of the speaker line-up is the illuminated centre speaker which extends out of the instrument panel and uses B&O Acoustic Lens Technology. Its distinctive form guarantees perfect sound quality in every seat. When the music system is switched off, the centre speaker retreats back into the instrument panel almost without trace. Meanwhile, the new ambient lighting for the interior creates a pleasant ambience, especially at night. Footwell lights for the driver and front passenger and indirect roof liner illumination via lights integrated into the B-pillars further enhance the feeling of well-being. The colour of the ambient light can be altered according to taste.

New screen experience: the multifunctional instrument display
A particular highlight of the BMW 7-Series is the multifunctional instrument display, which makes its debut appearance on the options list. In place of the traditional instrument cluster - in which four circular analogue dials keep the driver informed of the car's speed, engine revs, fuel level and oil temperature -an almost seamlessly integrated 10.25-inch display provides a totally new and appealing screen experience consciously inspired by the looks of the latest electronic devices.

While the familiar format of four circular instruments is retained here, the extended black-panel technology hands the driver a whole new set of display options. For example, the display shows varying information and different colour and mood worlds in the COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO driving experience modes, ensuring greater safety and efficiency and demonstrating an exemplary focus on the driver. The information shown is tailored to the driving mode currently engaged and therefore changes accordingly. All of which means the display the driver sees in the instrument cluster is always the optimum one for the driving situation at hand.

In SPORT mode the display takes on a signature BMW orange hue. This display mode purposefully retains a very puristic look and only shows the driver the most essential information, so that he can maintain maximum concentration on the road ahead. The speedometer shows the car's speed in digital form only with a large, centrally positioned figure, while the gear currently engaged is boldly displayed in the middle of the rev counter if the driver is shifting manually using the steering wheel paddles. As well as the changes in colour, the displays in the instrument cluster also deliver additional information tailored to the situation at hand - such as status and function updates, Check/Control messages and navigation instructions - which drivers can call up as and when they wish.

Control Display
The introduction of the new multifunctional instrument display is accompanied by a technical and stylistic update for the central Control Display positioned between the driver and front passenger. A black surround lends the recessed 10.25-inch display additional visual depth, which has the effect of making it look even larger. Vertical electroplated bars border the screen to the sides and add extra visual flourishes which the electroplated surrounds for the cupholder lids carry over into the centre console.

Powertrain and chassis: Even more ways to enjoy refined power delivery, enhanced efficiency and a step up in comfort
The new BMW 7-Series is poised to strengthen its position even further as the most innovative sedan in the luxury segment. New and comprehensively revised engine variants set new standards in terms of performance and efficiency. All the engines available for the new 7-Series team up with an intelligent eight-speed automatic transmission and distinguish themselves with significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions. The Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration and the second-generation Driving Experience Control switch with ECO PRO mode offer additional potential for fuel-saving. Carefully optimised suspension and Electric Power Steering for all rear-wheel-drive models also take driving comfort to a new level, while self-levelling air suspension for the rear axle likewise comes as standard on all models.

Alongside the flagship BMW 760i with 12-cylinder powerplant and the entry-level engine in the BMW 730i (not available in all markets), customers can choose from the new six-cylinder in-line unit powering the BMW 740i and the revised V8 petrol engine in the BMW 750i. The six-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 730d and BMW 740d also offer drivers the combination of increased output and lower fuel consumption. Making its debut, meanwhile, is the new BMW 750d xDrive. Under its bonnet lies the new Twin Power Turbo six-cylinder diesel engine - the world's most powerful diesel engine of its kind. Rounding off the range is the second-generation BMW Active Hybrid 7 with new six-cylinder in-line engine and significantly reduced emissions.

BMW 760i: refined 12-cylinder engine still top of the tree
The V12 engine with BMW Twin Power Turbo technology, direct petrol injection and continuously variable camshaft control represents the pinnacle of the BMW 7-Series engine range - no change there. The all-aluminium powerplant generates output of 400 kW/544 hp from its 5,972 cc displacement and makes peak torque of 750 Newton metres (553 lb-ft) available as low down as 1,500 rpm. That's enough to propel the BMW 760i effortlessly from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). With average fuel economy of 12.8 litres per 100 kilometres (22.1 mpg) and CO2 emissions of 299 g/km, this most cultured of power merchants achieves unprecedented efficiency for its output class.

BMW 750i: eight-cylinder engine develops more power but burns less fuel
The revised V8 petrol engine under the bonnet of the BMW 750i is making its debut. The 4,395 cc eight-cylinder powerplant retains the impressively smooth assurance and spirited power delivery of its pre-update days. However, optimised high-pressure direct injection and reduced charge cycle losses - thanks in the main to the seamlessly variable control of intake valve lift - have pushed its performance potential to a higher level than its predecessor and substantially reduced its fuel economy and emissions. In its latest development stage, the engine generates peak output of 330 kW/450 hp (+ 10 %) and unleashes peak torque of 650 Newton metres / 479 lb-ft (+ 8.5 %) between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. The engine teams up with the eight-speed automatic transmission, allowing the BMW 750i to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds and progress on to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The eight-cylinder engine belies its improved performance with better efficiency than ever; with overall fuel consumption of 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres (32.9 mpg) and CO2 emissions recorded at 199 g/km, the BMW 750i trumps its less powerful predecessor by a clear 25 per cent. In the Chinese market, the BMW 750i is powered by a 4-litre variant of the engine offering 300 kW/408 hp and 600 Newton metres (443 lb-ft) of torque.

BMW 740i: new six-cylinder petrol engine boasts outstanding efficiency
The 3-litre six-cylinder in-line engine stands out with its majestic power and unparalleled high-revving character. The state-of-the-art powerplant is one of the first wave of highly efficient petrol engines to bring together BMW Twin Power Turbo technology with High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, twin-scroll turbocharging, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing and Valvetronic variable valve timing. Peak output of 235 kW/320 hp and a maximum 450 Newton metres (332 lb-ft) of torque on tap as low down as 1,300 rpm make this ultra-refined engine the performance equal of the outgoing BMW 740i. However, fuel economy in the EU test cycle is an impressive 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (35.8 mpg) while CO2 emissions of 184 grams per kilometre represent a 21 per cent reduction in its predecessor's output.

BMW 730i: entry-level engine variant with reduced fuel consumption (not available in all markets)
This proven 3-litre straight-six petrol engine develops, as before, 190 kW/258 hp and maximum torque of 310 Newton metres (229 lb-ft) at 2,600 rpm. Linking up with the new eight-speed automatic transmission allows the BMW 730i to exploit additional fuel-saving potential; average fuel economy stands at 8.6 litres per 100 km (32.9 mpg), while CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometres are 13 per cent below the level recorded by its predecessor working with a six-speed transmission.

BMW 750d xDrive: new range-topping TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder diesel engine with intelligent all-wheel drive

The brand-new top-of-the-line diesel powerplant under the bonnet of the BMW 750d xDrive provides fresh evidence of BMW's pre-eminence in the area of engine technology. The world's most powerful six-cylinder in-line diesel engine grabs the headlines with its innovative and unique technology, and imbues the luxury sedan with impressive dynamics and outstanding efficiency.

The remarkable TwinPower Turbo technology at the heart of the six-cylinder unit works with three turbochargers and a further developed common rail injection system for the first time in order to optimise the engine's output, torque and responsiveness. The precisely coordinated management of the turbochargers ensures that the 3-litre high-performance diesel engine develops imposing pulling power across the full rev range - and all with an exceptionally high level of efficiency. The first charger starts work at just over idle so the combustion chambers can be supplied at an early stage. At 1,500 rpm a larger high-pressure turbo kicks in to help the engine reach its maximum torque. Finally, the third turbocharger joins the fray at 2,700 rpm and ensures particularly impressive power delivery until maximum revs are reached. Piezo injectors spray the fuel into the combustion chambers at up to 2,200 bar, with three pre-injections, one main injection and four post-injections of fuel during each power stroke ensuring efficient and clean combustion.

This enviable engine technology enables the six-cylinder in-line powerplant to produce maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp and impressive peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft) from as low down as 2,000 rpm, endowing the BMW 750d xDrive with extraordinary thrust. Indeed, the Sedan races from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 4.9 seconds. The engine's vast reserves of power also give it a compelling elasticity. Equally impressive as its performance capability, however, are the efficiency benefits of the BMW diesel technology on board; the Sedan posts fuel economy of 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres (44.1 mpg) in the EU test cycle, which means CO2 emissions are also suitably low at 169 g/km. Plus, BMW BluePerformance technology enables the new flagship diesel to meet the EU6 exhaust gas standard comfortably ahead of time.

The permanent, electronically controlled all-wheel drive of the BMW 750i xDrive ensures the power from this range-topping diesel finds its way safely onto the road at all times by dividing engine power between the front and rear wheels in response to the situation at hand. The system's precision and rapid responses help give the Sedan stable and dynamic driving characteristics even under demanding conditions.

BMW 740d: further reduction in fuel consumption and emissions
The rigorous further development of BMW Twin Power Turbo technology has also given the dynamics and efficiency of the familiar six-cylinder in-line diesel engine a boost. At 230 kW/313 hp, the maximum output of the 3-litre six-cylinder diesel is five kilowatts higher than its predecessor's, while peak torque of 630 Newton metres / 465 lb-ft (+ 30 Nm / 22 lb-ft) comes on stream at 1,500 rpm. Added to which, thermodynamic optimisations sharpen the diesel model's responses and enhance its agility. Linking up with the new eight-speed automatic transmission, the more powerful BMW 740d manages to record even lower fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres (49.6 mpg) to go with CO2 emissions of 149 g/km. That's a 17 per cent improvement on its predecessor.

BMW 730d: cleanest diesel in the luxury segment, emitting just 148 g/km
Another round of fuel consumption and emissions reductions sees the BMW 730d building on its position as the world's most economical luxury sedan with the lowest emissions. Peak output of the 3-litre six-cylinder diesel engine, whose construction mirrors that of the engine in the BMW 740d, has increased by 10 kilowatts to 190 kW/258 hp. And its maximum torque has also risen to 560 Newton metres / 413 lb-ft (+ 20 Nm / 15 lb-ft). However, average fuel economy of 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres (50.4 mpg) in the EU test cycle and CO2 emissions of just 148 g/km allow it to outperform its predecessor - married to a six-speed automatic transmission - by 17 per cent. Specifying the engine with the optionally available Blue Performance technology equips it to meet the EU6 standard.

BMW xDrive: available as an option for the BMW 750i, BMW 740d and BMW 730d
BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive makes the BMW 7-Series Sedan an even more attractive proposition. In addition to the typical benefits of all-wheel drive, the electronically controlled xDrive system - which can vary the power distribution between the front and rear wheels with split-second speed - ensures top-class traction, safety and handling, and optimal power management whatever the weather and road conditions. The system has been set up to deliver greater agility and precision through corners as well, offers an ideal combination of dynamism and comfort, and provides the perfect basis for a refined driving experience.

BMW Active Hybrid 7: second generation with six-cylinder petrol engine
As BMW continues to push ahead with the development of intelligent hybrid drive systems, the second generation of the BMW Active Hybrid 7 is set to celebrate its premiere in 2012. The updated model sets itself apart with lower fuel consumption and emissions, as well as innovative auxiliary functions. This latest evolution stage uses a six-cylinder in-line engine displaying impressive high-revving characteristics, torque and efficiency. The cutting-edge petrol engine with BMW Twin Power Turbo technology is the 235 kW/320 hp variant of the unit fitted in the new BMW 740i and replaces the eight-cylinder engine used up to now. Other hybrid components include the 40 kW/55 hp synchronous electric motor, the hybrid-spec eight-speed automatic transmission, a lithium-ion high-performance battery and power electronics underpinning intelligent energy management. The various components come together into a powerful and harmonious whole, giving the new BMW Active Hybrid 7 exceptional dynamics and an outstanding balance between performance and fuel economy - and not only in relation to its predecessor.

With system output of 260 kW/354 hp and peak torque of 500 Newton metres (369 lb-ft), the new BMW Active Hybrid 7 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds. At the same time, the Sedan posts average fuel economy of 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres (41.5 mpg) and CO2 emissions of 158 g/km. That means the more powerful hybrid technology uses some 14 per cent less fuel than a BMW 740i with a conventional drive system.

A host of innovative functions are involved in enhancing the car's dynamics and achieving the excellent efficiency of the overall system. For example, the electric motor hands the six-cylinder an extra 210 Newton metres (155 lb-ft) of torque through the boost function, should the driver need to nail a quick sprint or call on some hard mid-range acceleration. In addition, Brake Energy Regeneration, the Hybrid Start Stop function, ECO PRO mode with coasting function and proactive analysis - to prepare the car's drive system in advance for upcoming situations on the road - ensure the available energy is used as efficiently as possible (more details in the "BMW EfficientDynamics" chapter). The new BMW ActiveHybrid 7 can also run purely on electric power. If the hybrid battery has sufficient charge and the driver goes easy on the accelerator, the car can cover a distance of up to four kilometres (just under 2.5 miles) almost silently and without producing any tailpipe emissions. The top speed possible using electric power alone is 60 km/h (37 mph).

Innovative eight-speed automatic gearbox now fitted as standard
For the year 2012 BMW is fitting all 7-Series models with the extremely effective eight-speed automatic transmission previously reserved for the BMW 760i, BMW 740d xDrive and BMW Active Hybrid 7. Its additional ratios allow the gearbox to combine unbeatable shift comfort and efficiency, while at the same time aiding the dynamic qualities of the BMW 7-Series Sedan. With its intelligent control technology, the eight-speed transmission boasts extremely fast shift and reaction times and direct downshift capability. The electronic transmission controller can also alter the shift characteristics as required, to cater either for a more sporty or for a more relaxed, fuel-saving driving style.

Despite a larger overall spread, eight ratios mean that the spacing between them is smaller, so that the optimal ratio is available in virtually all situations. The close ratios deliver refined and powerful acceleration as well as smooth and fuel-efficient low-rpm operation. Altogether, then, as well as providing dynamic acceleration and smooth shifting, the new eight-speed automatic also allows drivers to maintain a very economical driving style.

The chassis: optimised set-up and extended standard specification noticeably enhance comfort levels for the driver and passengers

Dynamic performance, ride comfort and active safety are again among the stand-out qualities of the BMW 7-Series Sedan in the year 2012. Sophisticated chassis technology plays a key role here, providing the ideal partner for the refinement and power of the drive systems. A host of measures give the ride comfort of the Sedan a noticeable boost. Complementing the optimised chassis set-up - with modified rubber bearings and new dampers - and the self-levelling air suspension for the rear axle, Electric Power Steering is a standard feature of the models with rear-wheel drive. State-of-the-art electronic control systems with likewise retuned software help to enhance the long-distance attributes of the BMW 7-Series Sedan and ensure that the new edition of the car makes travelling on board even more pleasurable in terms of both dynamics and comfort.

Audi is refreshing the A5 model series. Advanced technologies are being added to the Sportback, Coupé, Cabriolet and S5 models in the areas of the engine, quattro drive and infotainment for even more efficiency, sportiness and intelligence. The updated design visually underscores the technical expertise involved in these versions.

The Audi A5 models are now more distinctive than ever. The rear lights and the headlights have been redesigned and are optionally available in xenon plus technology with homogenous LED daytime running lights. New colors and materials accentuate the interior, and many details of the operating concept have been fine-tuned.

Each of the four TDI diesel and three TFSI gasoline units in the new engine lineup include forced induction and direct fuel injection. The new 1.8 TFSI features a number of groundbreaking innovations. Fuel consumption has been reduced by 11 percent on average. The start-stop system and the recuperation system come standard with all engine-transmission configurations.

Each engine is matched with the ideal drivetrain - six-speed manual, multitronic, seven-speed S tronic, front-wheel drive or quattro drive. When combined with S tronic, the quattro drivetrain uses the crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring; the sport differential is the perfect complement. The chassis has been more finely tuned, with the optional Audi drive select system and dynamic steering making the Audi A5 even more fun to drive. The electromechanical power steering is new to the Audi A5 family.

The new A5 is a highly intelligent car. Its driver assistance systems have undergone intensive further development. The range of infotainment options now includes the Bluetooth online car phone, which delivers a number of special services and connects the Audi A5 to the Internet.

Exterior design and body
Ever since their debut, the models of the Audi A5 family - the Sportback, Coupé and Cabriolet - have impressed with their elegance. The flowing silhouettes, the sharp lines and the muscular surfaces make strong statements. The product improvement adds sharp new accents to the design.

The upper corners of the single-frame grille in high-gloss black are beveled. The grille's lateral bars and the Audi rings appear to be sculpted. The new bumper features pronounced air inlets with massive struts, revamped grilles and flat fog lights. Sharply chiseled edges give the engine hood a three-dimensional look; the entire front end appears even flatter and wider.

The headlights have also been updated. Their lower edge forms a wave; their interior has been restructured. With the optional xenon plus headlights, the LED daytime running lights form a narrow, homogenous clasp framing the headlight. Audi also offers the adaptive light system with dynamic cornering light and turning light. The rear lights have also been redesigned and are optionally available with continuous LED light strips. The bumper includes a number of additional details.

The product improvement has added a millimeter (0.04 in) to each of the exterior dimensions. The Audi A5 Sportback is 4.71 meters (15.45 ft) long; the Coupé and the Cabriolet 4.63 meters (15.19 ft). The range of colors has been reshuffled and now comprises 16 colors. The fully automatic acoustic top of the Audi A5 Cabriolet is available in four colors. The S line exterior package is available for those who appreciate an even more dynamic look.

The vehicle bodies impress with high rigidity, outstanding crash safety, high vibrational comfort and low weight. The front fenders are made of aluminum for improved axial load distribution. Aerodynamic fine-tuning measures include a lined underbody.

Interior design
A harmonious balance of proportions and surfaces, fine materials and top-quality fit and finish: The interior of the Audi A5 models reflects the Audi brand culture. It is now more elegant than ever - with new steering wheels, including an option for a flattened ring, new steering column stalks and with narrow chrome clasps framing the control elements.

A button is used to directly adjust the optional seat heating and seat ventilation in three stages. Also updated were the ignition key, the selector lever for the automatic transmission, the button for the optional Audi drive select system and the controls of the high-efficiency air conditioning and multifunction steering wheel. All displays are now illuminated in white.

New paint covers the bezels on the instrument cluster and the center console, and there is also a new selection of upholstery and inlays. The latter are available in Aluminium Trigon or in walnut or natural fine grain ash. Almost all of the interior colors are new. Fine Nappa leather replaces Valcona in the Sportback, and the armrests can also be covered in leather, if desired. The Audi A5 Sportback is also now optionally available as a five-seater.

Another attractive option is the S line sport package. It drapes the interior in black and accentuates it with elegant applications. A sport suspension lowers the vehicle body by 10 millimeters (0.39 in), and 18-inch wheels round out the package. Buyers looking for that special something will find many more customization options in the Audi exclusive range, including the stylish Audi exclusive line with two-tone seat coverings.

Engines
The Audi A5 family sets new standards for sportiness and efficiency. All engines feature forced induction and direct injection for tremendous pulling power. Even the entry-level engine produces 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque. The start-stop system and the recuperation system are standard with all engines - no other manufacturer takes such a rigorous approach. The lineup comprises three gasoline engines and four TDI units. CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 22 percent.

The completely redesigned 1.8 TFSI showcases the full extent of Audi's expertise. Groundbreaking innovations can be found in the control of the valves and their lift, the thermal management concept, the injection system, the turbocharger and the integration of the exhaust manifold. In the Audi A5 Coupé, the high-end four-cylinder unit consumes on average just 5.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (41.27 US mpg). This best-in-class value corresponds to 134 grams CO2 per km (215.65 g/mile) and is 21 percent lower than before. With 125 kW (170 hp), the 1.8 TFSI accelerates the A5 powerfully.

The output of the 2.0 TFSI remains unchanged at 155 kW (211 hp). New to the Audi A5 lineup is the 3.0 TFSI, a supercharged V6 producing 200 kW (272 hp).

The diesel engines are also impressively efficient, and the four-cylinder units feature modifications in numerous areas. Equipped with the 130 kW (177 hp) 2.0 TDI and a manual transmission, the Audi A5 Coupé consumes on average just 4.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (50.05 US mpg) - a CO2 equivalent of 122 g per km (196.34 g/mile) and a milestone in the coupe segment.

Three V6 diesel units round out the lineup on the top end. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) is the most fuel-efficient six-cylinder unit in its class worldwide. In the Audi A5 Coupé with multitronic, it consumes on average 4.9 liters (48 US mpg) of fuel and emits just 129 grams CO2 per km (207.61 g/mile). The second variant of the 3.0 TDI produces 180 kW (245 hp). Arriving somewhat later is a particularly low-emissions clean diesel model that will make the Audi A5 the first coupe on the market to meet the Euro 6 diesel standard.

Drivetrain
Audi offers the ideal drivetrain for each engine. A manual six-speed transmission and the continuously variable multitronic are available for models with front-wheel drive. The quattro models come with a manual transmission or the lightning-fast, seven-speed S tronic. All of the transmissions shine with their convenience and precision, high efficiency and wide gear spread. The long ratios in the upper gears reduce fuel consumption.

Members of the Audi A5 family equipped with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the S tronic transmission also feature the crown-gear center differential with torque vectoring. During normal driving, the mechanical component sends the engine's power primarily to the rear wheels. If necessary, it redistributes the power lightning-fast and smoothly. Up to 70 percent can flow to the front axle, 85 percent to the rear axle. Torque vectoring uses targeted, minor braking interventions to make the handling even more precise.

Available as an option in all Audi A5 quattro models, the sport differential provides for maximum precision and high traction. It uses two superposition stages engaged via multi-plate clutches to actively distribute the torque between the rear wheels as needed.

Chassis
The Audi A5 models set standards for sporty dynamics, luxurious ride comfort and excellent driving safety. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum. The rear suspension bearings and the damper tuning have been updated for more precise handling and even greater comfort.

The ESP stabilization program with electronic limited slip differential is standard in all front-wheel drive versions of the Audi A5. ESP uses minimal braking interventions at the inside front wheel for even more agility during dynamic driving. The large brakes - with ventilated front and rear discs in many variants - offer excellent stopping power and are very easy to modulate.

17-inch wheels with 225/50 tires are standard. Options include wheels up to 20 inches and 265/30 tires as well as four new wheel designs.

Among the high-end features in the model series is Audi drive select. In the basic configuration, it adjusts the power steering boost, the accelerator characteristic, the shift points of the automatic transmission and the automatic air conditioning. Using a button in the cockpit, the driver can determine whether these components should work in "comfort," "auto," "dynamic" or "efficiency" mode. The latter helps to drive the Audi A5 particularly efficiently. If the car is equipped with a navigation system, there is also an "individual" mode that the driver can largely configure him or herself.

Audi drive select can be combined with additional modules, if desired. These are the sport suspension with damper control, the sport differential and dynamic steering, which steplessly varies the steering ratio by nearly 100 percent as a function of speed.

Another new standard feature in the Audi A5 model series is the electromechanical power steering. An electric motor generates the right amount of boost for the speed being driven. The electromechanical power steering features a direct ratio, reacts instantly and provides precise road feedback. It intervenes slightly to support the driver when braking on a surface with less grip on one side of the car.

The system reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.3 liters per 100 km and up to 7 g CO2/km (11.27 g/mile) because it consumes no energy at all while driving straight.

Assistance systems
The assistance systems in the Audi A5 model series use a variety of technologies to make driving even more controlled. Some of them have been improved with new functions. Among the standard features is the new driver information system with recommendations to take a break. It uses steering motions and additional parameters to detect when the driver is getting tired and issues an appropriate warning.

Audi side assist supports the driver when changing lanes by using radar to monitor the space behind the car. Audi active lane assist - a new feature in the Audi A5 - helps the driver to maintain the lane. A camera detects the lane markings and the system makes slight corrections to the electromechanical steering, if necessary. The adaptive cruise control uses radar technology to maintain a constant interval between the Audi A5 and the vehicle ahead. At speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), it initiates maximum braking in the event of an impending collision.

Infotainment systems
The infotainment systems in the Audi A5 have been significantly upgraded. Audi equips all models in the A5 lineup with a CD radio and eight speakers.

The optional top-of-the-line unit is MMI navigation plus with a large hard drive, seven-inch color monitor, 3D graphics and DVD player. Its controls have been improved. The number of hard buttons has been reduced from eight to four and the volume control now features a joystick cap to make it easier to choose songs. Voice control and digital radio reception also received some fine-tuning.

An additional option is the Bluetooth online car phone. Audi connect is the catchword for the attractive services this phone brings to the A5, which include Google POI search, navigation with Google Earth images and a WLAN hotspot. The hotspot enables passengers to surf the Internet and send and receive e-mail with their mobile devices. Audi traffic information online is an additional service that does a much better job than the familiar TMC standard of providing the driver with extremely precise and current information about the traffic load along the selected route. All the driver needs to use these functions is a data-capable SIM card.

Prices
Despite the extensive product improvement, Audi is raising prices only slightly. The price increase for the Audi A5 Coupé 2.0 TFSI is only €200, for example. The base model, the Audi A5 Sportback 1.8 TFSI, costs €33,350.

The Audi S5
The top models in the series - the S5 as Sportback, Coupé and Cabriolet - have also been refreshed. All S5 models, including the Coupé, are now equipped with the 3.0 TFSI producing 245 kW (333 hp). Compared to the 4.2-liter V8 it replaces in the Coupé, the supercharged V6 consumes on average 20 percent less fuel per 100 kilometers. Average fuel consumption is just 8.1 liters (29.04 US mpg) while performance remains impressive. The S5 Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.9 seconds on its way to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

Visual cues to the updated S models include new lights, modified body details and new crystal-effect paint finishes. Subtle changes can also be found in the interior. The most important technical updates for the Audi S5 are quattro drive with the crown-gear center differential and electromechanical power steering. The special S sport suspension and the standard 18-inch wheels deliver the power to the road.

Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, 2013

  • Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, 2013

A new wind will soon be blowing in the open-top car market, created by a new Volkswagen: the Beetle Convertible. The car continues a unique automotive story: following the original VW Beetle Convertible (type 15), first launched in 1949, and the New Beetle Convertible of 2002, it marks the third generation of the curvaceous Volkswagen soft-top that offers unprecedented practicality and open-top driving fun for four.

Its unmistakable silhouette has made generations of the Beetle into cult cars. The fact that over 330,000 units of the original Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet cars were produced from 1949 to 1980 speaks for itself. In creating the latest version of the Beetle Convertible, Volkswagen has reinterpreted the timeless design of bygone days and given the silhouette a sportier and more dynamic look. The combination of a flatter roofline and the more upright windshield gives the car a silhouette that resembles that of the legendary original VW Beetle Cabriolet.

The new model also incorporates design criteria of the modern Volkswagen line-up: the air inlet under the bumper, the flat contour of the hood's bottom edge and in particular the tail lights show the close family ties. In the new Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, Volkswagen brings together modern technology and the highest standards of quality with the emotional legacy of the car's 'forefather'. As on the nostalgic icon, the headlights still have their classic round shape.

Another feature contributing to the special charm of the new Beetle Convertible is the traditional soft top. When open it lies very flat, enabling good vision to the rear. Despite its compact construction, the top is very wide and elongated in shape. It opens and closes entirely automatically (on all models) within around ten seconds and up to a driving speed of 30mph.

Included with the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is a standard soft-top cover, which, if desired, tucks the opened top neatly away. Surrounding chrome trim accentuates the borders between steel and fabric. As in other Beetle models, the compact instrument panel with extra large round instrument cluster and several nostalgic elements, such as the additional glove box, create a markedly different design inside the new Beetle Convertible as well.

With its spacious and comfortably designed interior the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is a fully-fledged four-seat vehicle. The trunk enfolding up to 225 liters includes a fold-down symmetrically split rear bench seat which allows transporting bigger items event when the roof is closed.

To provide added safety in the event of a rollover accident, Volkswagen has developed an active rollover protection system. It consists of two extendable modules fitted inside the vehicle in concealed fashion behind the back of the rear bench seat. If the car were to roll over, the two rollover modules would be activated via the central airbag triggering unit. Along with the fixed A-pillars, they provide effective protection for the occupants of all four seats within a matter of milliseconds. Another extra safety feature is front and head-thorax-airbags that are standard equipment.

The new Volkswagen Beetle Convertible will be available with seven engine options. The entry-level engine is a highly efficient 1.2-liter TSI, delivering 77 kW/ 105 PS. Right from the launch, the BlueMotion Technology version of this gasoline engine will also be available. The other gasoline engines are the lively 1.4-liter TSI and the 2.0-liter version, producing 118 kW and 147 kW respectively. In the diesel area, Volkswagen is offering the tried and tested 1.6-liter TDI with 77 kW (including as a BMT version) and the 2.0-liter TDI, delivering 103 kW.

In Germany, the new Volkswagen Beetle Convertible can be ordered beginning in November 2012 with prices starting at €21,350.

Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, 2013

  •  Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, 2013

Luxury and refinement, striking design, maximum safety and the dynamism so typical of the brand: the new high-performance SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, combines compelling technologies with an extensive range of standard equipment and pure ride comfort for up to seven passengers. Effortless superiority comes courtesy of the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, which develops a peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation provides high-level driving dynamics and the comfort one would expect from the Mercedes brand.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "The new GL63 AMG completes our performance-oriented all-wheel drive offering. In addition to the ML63 AMG all-rounder and the recently unveiled, characterful G63 AMG and G65 AMG models, the GL63 AMG places particular emphasis on dynamism and style. Combining the first-rate comfort of the S-Class with the performance of an AMG sports saloon, the GL63 AMG is unique in its segment.

The AMG M 157 eight-cylinder engine features an innovative, high-tech power package including spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, biturbo charging, air/water intercooling, all-aluminium crankcase, a four-valve-per-cylinder design with variable camshaft adjustment, plus alternator management and the ECO start/stop system.

Power is transmitted to all four permanently driven wheels by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Featuring three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission offers a fascinatingly broad scope of variability. In "Controlled Efficiency" (C) mode the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill. "C" also stands for a gentle accelerator and transmission characteristic with early gear changes; start-up generally takes place in second gear here. A green "ECO" symbol in the AMG instrument cluster indicates to the driver that the ECO start/stop function is active.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving programmes the ECO start/stop function is inactive and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility with more spontaneous responses. A brief and exactly defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting at full load additionally provides for shorter shift times and an acoustic experience.

Enhanced efficiency and driving dynamics
To enhance efficiency, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission incorporates a fuel-economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and a transmission-oil thermal management system. Friction loss-minimised axle gears, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, an optimised belt drive, and demand-responsive control of all ancillary units and pumps also help to reduce fuel consumption.

Mercedes-AMG deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 in the interests of dynamic handling. As if that were not enough, the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package - consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) - is combined with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation. This system, which comes as standard and is specific to AMG, employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body's roll angle during cornering. Apart from enhanced agility and driving pleasure, the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM has the additional effect of increasing handling stability and therefore safety, particularly at higher speeds.

Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG driver is able to choose at the push of a button between the three suspension modes "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport plus". The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability.

The AMG-specific elastokinematics at the front axle and the more robustly designed rear axle stabiliser bar are responsible for improved steering precision. The enhanced drive train delivers the best possible power transmission and hallmark Mercedes reliability. The 4ETS electronic traction control system which features as standard provides for optimised grip when friction coefficients vary.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system
Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering features variable power assistance which responds in accordance with the chosen suspension mode. It also helps to save fuel, as the steering assist function only requires energy when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG comes as standard with 5-spoke light-alloy wheels in format 10 x 21, painted titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish, fitted with tyres in size 295/40 R 21. The AMG high-performance braking system provides for the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance with ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round in size 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 millimetres (rear).

Performance-oriented design with masculine features
Striking, masculine, unmistakeable: these attributes describe the design of the GL63 AMG. Mercedes-AMG has enhanced the main stylistic features of the new GL - powerful dynamism and sporty elegance - using specific elements that emphasise the top V8 model's exceptional performance. The typically upright GL radiator grille with its central Mercedes star is adorned with high-gloss slats painted in black. AMG styling elements include the front apron with its large openings that ensure an effective air flow for the cooling modules. The bottom air intake takes the form of a typical AMG stylised "A" with a gap under the fine black fin through which air can flow optimally to the cooling modules - the perfect blend of design and high-tech. The trim insert in matt silver chrome installed under it creates a sense of width and coordinates optimally with the borders of the LED daytime running lamps in the side air openings.

The AMG front apron elegantly merges into the exclusive wheel-arch flaring. In order to accommodate the large 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG light-alloy wheels with the wide-base 295 tyres, the flaring widens the vehicle by 22 millimetres on each side. From the side, observers will notice the V8 BITURBO logos on the wings and illuminated running boards with an aluminium finish. The rear wheel-arch flaring blends into the AMG rear apron which is again adorned with a striking trim insert in matt silver chrome and the suggestion of black air openings. Creating both a visual and acoustic highlight are the two chrome-plated, exposed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Exclusivity and dynamism dominate in the interior
Great attention to detail, excellent ergonomics and a generous amount of space available - exclusivity and dynamism also dominate in the interior of the Mercedes GL63 AMG. All seven seats in the high-performance SUV are covered in high-quality leather, as is the centre armrest. Electrically adjustable AMG sports seats feature double topstitching in a contrasting colour and AMG badges on the front seat backrests and outer rear seat backrests. The dashboard, armrests and door panelling come in ARTICO man-made leather with double topstitching. As part of the optional designo Exclusive package, these components can be covered in high-quality designo leather.

The AMG Performance 4-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather in the grip area, flattened bottom section on the steering wheel rim and aluminium shift paddles ensures optimal vehicle control. Four round instruments on the AMG instrument cluster provide the driver with information. The central colour TFT monitor incorporates the AMG welcome logo and AMG main menu.
