Paris is now the city of the VW Golf GTI. Four years ago, the sixth generation of the best-seller made its debut here - still as a concept car. In autumn 2012, Volkswagen is presenting the seventh generation Golf GTI in a premiere at the 2012 Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris - also as a concept car. In doing so, Volkswagen is opening another window to the immediate future of the most successful European car model series, because another car being shown to a global audience in the French capital at the same time as the GTI is the near-production concept of the new Golf BlueMotion. The new Volkswagen Golf GTI will be launched into the market in early 2013.

One GTI, two power levels
220 PS and 230 PS. The concept of the next Golf GTI is powered by a further advanced engine from the EA888 series - a two-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine with 162 kW / 220 PS. A new option: for the first time in the iconic sports car's history, a performance pack will be available as a factory-installed option. In this version, the engine's maximum power is boosted to 169 kW / 230 PS. Both GTI versions are equipped with a Stop/Start system as standard, they fulfil the EU-6 emissions standard that takes effect in 2014 and - with a 6-speed manual gearbox - they attain the same low DIN fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100 km (CO2: 140 g/km). Compared to the previous model (155 kW / 210 PS), the combined fuel consumption of the new Golf GTI is therefore reduced by 1.3 litres per 100 km or 18 per cent. A 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) is available as an option for both power levels. The recognised high agility of the Volkswagen Golf GTI has been increased once again in the new model compared to the previous model - in two stages:
  • Stage 1 - standard GTI: The 220 PS base version now produces 10 PS more than the previous model. At the same time, its maximum torque was increased by an immense 70 Nm to 350 Nm. This value in the new Golf GTI is exactly the same as that of the previous Golf R, which was powered by an engine from another TSI generation. Equipped in this way, the Golf GTI makes its appearance with impressive flexibility values: in fourth gear, the Volkswagen Golf GTI accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in 5.0 seconds; in fifth gear it takes 6.0 seconds. Other data that must not be overlooked in a GTI: the new one accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 246 km/h.
  • Stage 2 - Performance GTI: Those choosing a Golf GTI with the performance pack ignite the second stage. As mentioned, the car's power is increased by 10 PS here, while its maximum torque is identical. The 230 PS of power enables a top speed of 250 km/h and just 6.5 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h.
New front axle differential lock and progressive steering
The performance pack not only offers a plus in power, but also a plus in handling: instead of 16-inch brakes, the GTI is equipped with 17-inch brakes here (with GTI badges on the callipers) and a front axle differential lock (VAQ) that is also being offered for the first time in this form.

Front axle differential lock. The electronically controlled lock has a positive effect on active safety and driving dynamics, because it practically prevents the power-related understeer that can occur in powerful front-wheel drive cars. This makes handling precise, and has a stabilising effect in load-alteration induced oversteer. The reason: VAQ increases the power to the wheel on the outside of the curve, which also optimises the vehicle's speed through bends. Traction is also improved when driving on loose and wet road surfaces and in turning situations.

Progressive steering. The new progressive steering system is celebrating a world premiere in the Golf GTI. It is a standard feature for both power levels. Thanks to this steering system, the driver can turn the car through a desired radius with fewer turns of the steering wheel. In other words, the driver does not need to reach over the wheel as often. That may sound simple, but it is revolutionary. The reason is that conventional steering systems work with a constant gear ratio. The new steering of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, meanwhile, operates with a progressive steering gear ratio. This noticeably reduces steering work when manoeuvring and parking. On country roads with lots of bends, and when making turns, the driver experiences a benefit in dynamics due to the more direct layout.

Technically, progressive steering differs from the basic steering system due to the rack and pinion's variable tooth spacing and a more powerful electric motor. Its functional difference: unlike with constant steering ratios, which by necessity always represent a compromise between dynamic performance and comfort, here the steering rack's toothing is significantly modified by the steering stroke. As a result, the transition between indirect steering behaviour in the mid-range (straight-line driving) and direct steering behaviour at larger steering wheel angles is designed to be progressive, which, as mentioned above, enables significantly more agile steering behaviour in dynamic driving situations. This results in smaller steering input angles when parking for greater convenience and comfort.

Variable ratios have long been known in the area of hydraulic steering systems; however, the tuning of such a steering system is subject to very tight limits, so that the driver is not overtaxed by the transitional behaviour. With the Golf GTI's progressive steering system the situation is completely different: the combination of the steering rack's progressive steering ratio and the tuning potential of an electro-mechanical steering system is systematically exploited in the GTI to realise optimised steering behaviour that is sporty yet practical in everyday driving. In all other Golf cars, progressive steering is offered as an optional feature.

Exterior - features and styling
Like all six Golf GTI generations before it, the seventh generation concept car being shown in Paris is distinguished from other Golf models by numerous additional equipment features and classic GTI insignia. On the exterior, these include the red painted brake callipers, a GTI-typical honeycomb structure for the air inlet screens, smoked LED rear lights including LED licence plate lighting as well as chrome 80 mm diameter tailpipes on the left and right. Some features have been characteristic since the days of the first Volkswagen Golf GTI, for example the production colours Red ("Tornado Red") and "Black" and an optional white exterior ("Pure White" as special colour). Volkswagen has further developed the classic GTI wheels "Denver", "Detroit" and "Glendale" whose styling characteristics from the previous model have flowed into the design of the new machine-polished 17-inch "Brooklyn" alloy wheels; they have a lighter visual look and are in fact lighter in weight. The wheels are fitted with 225/45 size tyres. 18-inch wheels will also be available on the GTI as an option.

GTI styling
Overall, the seventh generation Golf is also visually more dynamic than the previous one. The objective of the designers was to develop an even more striking and sporty character into the new Golf GTI - the goal was to give the GTI a lower, wider image with a more challenging character. Volkswagen Design developed numerous individual, detailed solutions for the new Golf GTI and integrated them harmoniously into the overall visual concept. Important here is the fact that the GTI-specific design elements are not simply "add-on" solutions, but are integrated into the overall design of the car. One significant reason for this is that the GTI was designed in parallel to the "normal" Golf - and this made it possible to coordinate perfectly the differentiating characteristics of the two model versions.

At the front end, with its LED fog lights specially customised for the GTI, a powerful and significant GTI element attracts attention, which has now been fully reinterpreted: the red stripe. In the first generation of the car it surrounded the rectangular radiator grille completely. On the sixth generation GTI there were two red stripes, which framed the grille at the top and bottom. Now, on the seventh generation car, the red stripe marks the lower edge of the radiator grille, but for the first time it extends further to the left and right, up to the housings of the bi-xenon headlights. So, the red line now runs completely across the front end.

In the far lower section of the bumper, beneath the crossbar painted in body colour, the black air inlet (with a honeycomb pattern screen) is no longer framed by a black area, rather by surfaces painted in body colour, which makes the air inlet stand out more powerfully. At the same time, the three lateral black aerodynamic fins beneath the headlights play a more prominent role in the front end styling. Another detail fitting in with the precisely contoured styling is the black splitter (lower edge of the front spoiler), which is familiar from motorsport. Also styled in black are the side sills and the rear diffuser. These quasi wrap-around black elements give the Golf, which is equipped with a GTI sport chassis (15 mm lower ride height), an even fuller stance on the road.

Another example of the harmonious integration of GTI-specific elements is the new roof spoiler design, which is considerably larger than its counterpart on Golf versions with less powerful engines and which is integrated to be flush with the bootlid and the body. For the first time, the sporty Volkswagen also has - in addition to the GTI badges at the front and rear - red plates on the front wings at the height of the character line with the same typographic interpretation of the GTI logo that has been used for decades.

Interior - features and appearance
GTI insignia in the interior. The very first GTI had the feature: seat covers in legendary tartan pattern. The sixth generation Golf GTI used "Jacky" fabric, and in the transition to the new GTI generation this has been redesigned and is now named "Clark". Naturally, the tartan pattern was retained. The sport seats (in front, with sliding drawers under the seats) have exceptionally good ergonomic properties. Step in, sit down, adjust the backrest angle and the distance to the steering wheel, buckle up, and you're all ready to drive. Nonetheless, the front seats also have height adjustment and a manually adjustable lumbar support. Red decorative seams in the area of the seats and the gear shift trim provide a sporty contrast; the black roofliner that is always part of the GTI emphasises the sporty layout of the interior.

GTI features
Along with its many standard features such as air conditioning, fatigue detection and the "Composition Touch" radio system (with CD card slot and AUX-IN interface), other GTI-specific features refine the standard version interior as well: typical of a Volkswagen Golf GTI are the customised sport steering wheel and a special gear shift grip. The latter is once again reminiscent of a golf ball, which also makes it a tribute to the first GTI just like the new leather-trimmed steering wheel design. The sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel with its three metal spokes and trim in high-gloss black has a lightweight look, and it is remarkably handy and easy to grip. On its two cross spokes it has multifunction keys as standard, and at its centre - in contrast to all other Golf steering wheels - it has a round impact absorber whose form is similar to that of the component in the first GTI.

Also making a strong statement is the GTI instrument cluster with a colour display and independent graphics of its instruments. It is no coincidence that it resembles high-end chronographs. The GTI-specific look of the interior is completed by red ambience lighting, special trim strips and panels (trim strips in the front doors with ambience lighting), brushed stainless steel pedals and foot rest (on left), door sill entry plates in front with a stainless steel application and ambience lighting that is also integrated here.

Launched of the third generation Toyota Yaris adds a new chapter to the model's ongoing European success story. Over the last decade, the Yaris has consistently enjoyed a segment share of more than 5%. It has been a strong contributor to the increase in Toyota sales throughout Europe, boosting the brand image and becoming a key pillar of the company's European manufacturing operations.

The new Toyota Yaris compete in the B-segment which - with a 26% share of the total market, equating to some 4 million sales per annum - remains the most important sales arena of the European automotive market. This segment is currently dominated by petrolengined vehicles, which represent more than two thirds of the mix.

Over the last few years, fragmentation has accelerated within the B-segment, due to the introduction of an increasing diversity of new model types such as the SUV and B-MPV. Nonetheless, representing 50% of total sales, the hatchback remains the segment's most important, and best-selling, bodystyle.

With the continued increase in fuel costs and CO2 taxation levels instigating downsizing by customers from other segments, B-segment sales are expected to remain stable in the immediate future.

The second generation Toyota Yaris is praised for its interior roominess, durability, versatility, engine efficiency and ease of driving in the urban environment. The new Yaris consolidate all the strengths of the previous generation vehicle, while offering a more dynamic and sophisticated design execution, a clear step-up in sensory quality, a segment breakthrough in affordable multimedia connectivity, efficient powertrains, innovative transmission and the greater agility essential to urban driving.

Quality remain a key Toyota Yaris attribute. Further improving the built-in quality recently praised in the German 2011 TüV report, Toyota Motor Manufacturing France's close involvement with suppliers from the very earliest stages of production will ensure that every component contributes to the overall quality of the vehicle.

Positioned at the heart of the B-segment, the new Toyota Yaris delivers an ingenious combination of benefits. It meets the demands of both progressive, technology-focused customers and more conventional users who place an emphasis on quality, practicality and, of course, value for money.

All the Clever Yaris DNA in a More Dynamic Package
Since the European launch of the first Toyota Yaris in 1999, each successive generation of the car has been developed in accordance with the key concept: "compact outside while roomy inside". The Yaris quickly became nicknamed "Piccolo Genio" (little genius) - a testament to the packaging ingenuity of the first two generations of the car.

The third generation Toyota Yaris inherits all the clever packaging DNA of these previous generations, while the exterior showcases the greater appeal of a bolder, more dynamic and elegant design execution befitting a European compact car.

Overall vehicle length is now 3,885 mm, a limited increase of just 100 mm. With an average car length of 4 meters in the B-segment, the new Yaris remains one of the most compact vehicles in its class. This is reflected in a class-leading turning circle as of just 4.7 metres, which makes the new Toyota Yaris particularly agile during city driving.

The width of the new Yaris remains the same at 1,695 mm, while its height has decreased by 20 mm to 1,510 mm, giving the car a lower centre of gravity and a more sporting stance. Within its well proportioned form, the wheelbase has been extended by 50 mm, and the design's short front and rear overhangs and prominent wheel arches express stability, agility and dynamism.

The bold frontal treatment identifies the Toyota Yaris as the first vehicle to feature the new face of the next generation Toyota family. Key to the new frontal styling is a change in the proportions of the upper and lower grilles, with the emphasis now placed on enlarging the latter.

Elegantly sculpted to highlight the Toyota badge, a full-width concave shaped upper grille is flanked by new, horizontal 'long eye'-look headlights. Their slim design incorporates dual lamps and, on some grades, smoke-plated 'eyebrows' to emphasise the new Yaris' bolder, more horizontal front styling.

Within the lower bumper, a strong, protruding centre section houses a large air intake to focus attention on the bottom half of the vehicle, reinforcing the low centre of gravity and giving the Toyota Yaris a more ground-hugging appearance.

Whilst maintaining the model's classic 'Y' pattern graphic, these new frontal styling elements give the Toyota Yaris a bolder, more masculine appearance.

In profile, the dynamism of the vehicle is reinforced by the more prominent design of the steeply sloped beltline which has been a key styling cue for each generation of Yaris.

The base of the A pillar has been moved forwards to strengthen the Toyota Yaris' stylish, cab-forward silhouette. The resultant increase in windscreen rake helps improve the vehicle's drag coefficient to a class-leading Cd 0.287. Both front and rear three-quarter visibility have been improved though a larger front quarterlight and the elimination of the rear glazing division bar, the latter giving a more dynamic look to the rear glazing.

A flowing, door cill character line and front and rear aero corner treatments further emphasise the new Yaris' low centre of gravity and elegant, long wheelbase profile. Allied to numerous underbody airflow rectification components, these styling elements also improve aerodynamic performance for enhanced fuel efficiency.

To the rear, the detailing of the lamp clusters, top-hinged tailgate inset into the bumper and lower bumper treatment are visually interlinked, once again maintaining the model's classic, "Y" pattern graphic. And the higher relocation of the license plate beneath a chrome bar garnish within the tailgate brings a more premium quality image to the design execution.

The third generation Toyota Yaris features new 15" and 16" alloy wheel designs, and will be available in a choice of 10 exterior colours. Bringing a more colourful palette to the Yaris, five colours are newly adopted by the model range, and two -Gin Buck and Turquoise- are newly developed.

Greater Interior Sensory Quality, Roominess and Comfort
The key interior design goal for the new Toyota Yaris was to create a more driver-focused cockpit with a symmetrical layout. The driver's and front passenger's spaces are clearly divided, emphasising a new focus on the driver ergonomics.

Incorporating strong horizontal lines to create a feeling of width, the dashboard is dominated by a sculpted, soft-padded section which flows away from the driver's space into matching, upper door panel pads, heightening the sense of interior spaciousness.

Dashboard and door pad colour is matched to seat upholstery inserts according to the grade structure, reinforcing the highquality feel of the interior.

Perceptions of sensory quality are further enhanced through highly tactile, premium quality detailing. The driver's instruments, Multimedia touch screen and air vents are trimmed with gun metal finish, concave cross-sectioned rings. And all controls and switchgear feature chrome plated convex cross-sections.

Unlike previous Yaris generations, the instrument binnacle is now positioned central to the steering wheel, with all driverfocused controls and switchgear ergonomically located for high visibility and ease of use. A new, easy-to-read, amber/red backlit combination meter features a large diameter central speedometer.

Further enhancing driver comfort, the three-spoke, stitched leather steering wheel has a new, more comfortable grip crosssection, the steering column rake has been lowered by 3 degrees to deliver a more engaging driver position, and driver's seat vertical adjustability has been increased by 15 mm to a maximum 60 mm. A driver's seat armrest is also available for greater comfort.

The front seats themselves feature an entirely new framework offering improved body-holding performance and excellent ride comfort. The width of the seat cushion has been increased and the side sections raised for improved holding. And the seating surface area has been increased and the front edge of the seat cushion raised to help reduce long-distance fatigue.

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, passenger accommodation aboard the new Toyota Yaris has not been compromised. Wheelbase length has been increased by 50 mm and interior width by 30 mm. This, allied to the incremental saving of space through careful detailing throughout the interior, makes the new Yaris one of the roomiest vehicles in its segment.

Without compromise to either comfort or safety, both front and rear seatbacks, as well as the tailgate, have been thinned to maximise roominess throughout. The increases rear passenger knee clearance by 35 mm to a class-leading 645 mm, and loadspace depth by 145 mm to a class-leading 710 mm.

Overall luggage capacity within the two-tier loadspace has been raised to 286 litres, rising to 12 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat at 768 litres. And the tailgate opening has been widened by 20 mm for greater convenience.

The spaciousness and high sensory quality of the new interior is further reinforced through the Toyota Yaris' large, all-glass panoramic sunroof. The structure is separated into front and rear sections allowing more flexibility for front and rear occupant to open or close, each fitted with a 20% light transmittance roller shade.

Efficient, lightweight engines and innovative transmission
Continuing the successful mix of powertrains featured in the previous generation model range, the new Toyota Yaris available with a choice of three engines; 1.0 and 1.33 litre VVT-i petrol engines and a 1.4 litre D-4D turbodiesel.

All three engines benefit from the application of Toyota Optimal Drive, a range of engineering measures designed to maximise performance and driving enjoyment while minimising fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Toyota Optimal Drive focuses on several key aspects of powertrain development such as lightweight, compact design, enhanced combustion efficiency, low friction components and environmentally friendly technologies. This, combined with weight saving measures and aerodynamic improvements, helps lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without compromising power and torque levels.

Combining light weight and compact design with the power and torque delivery essential to urban driving, all three engines return highly competitive fuel consumption figures, generate low, taxefficient CO2 emissions and are Euro V compliant.

A marvel of miniaturisation, Toyota's 3-cylinder, 1.0 litre VVT-i petrol engine led the trend for powertrain downsizing. To this day it remains a reference for compact, efficient engineering. The lightest unit in its class, it has won successive Engine of the Year awards in the sub-1.0 litre category.

Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the latest version of the 998 cc unit generates 69 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 93 Nm at 3,600 rpm. Fuel consumption has been lowered by 4% to 4.8 l/100 km, and CO2 emissions lowered by 7% to only 110 g/km, making it the ideal engine for the shorter journeys of urban-based Yaris drivers.

A 1.33 Dual VVT-i petrol unit is available for customers requiring an engine with more power and torque. The engine is lightweight and compact, with a small bore and long stroke, resulting in a very high power-to-weight ratio. It combines strong dynamic performance, generating a 99 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and, via a smoothened torque curve, a maximum 125 Nm at 4,000 rpm. When mated to the new Multidrive S transmission, fuel economy is just 5.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions are at 118 g/km.

The 1.33 litre petrol engine's optional new Multidrive S transmission showcases Toyota's latest Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) technology. It now features a new manual override, sequential, 7-step mode operable by either the gearshift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddles.

Multidrive S operates within a wider band of gear ratios than a conventional transmission, allowing for both better acceleration from a standstill and improved fuel efficiency at cruising speeds. Engaging the Multidrive S Sport mode brings a closer alignment of engine and vehicle speeds, giving a more linear feel to acceleration in the manner of a conventional manual transmission. The Sport mode enhances acceleration performance and awards the driver a more dynamic driving experience.

Toyota Yaris models fitted with the 1.33 litre Dual VVT-I petrol engine may be equipped with an improved version of Toyota's Stop & Start system. Available in specific markets, the system now features a longer engine shut off time and will operate through a wider temperature range.

Finally, for customers who wish to combine strong performance with high mileage driving, a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine is available, fitted, as standard, with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, it generates 90 DIN hp at 3,800 rpm and maximum torque of 205 Nm at 1,800-2,800 rpm. Fuel consumption has been lowered by 7% to 3.9 l/100 km, and CO2 by 6% to just 103 g/km.

Available as an option on 1.4 D-4D diesel versions of the new Yaris, MultiMode is an automated manual transmission with a fully automatic shift mode and no clutch pedal. It offers the driver a choice of two, fully automatic gear change modes or a manual, sequential gear change with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

New Grade Structure: Greater Value and Improved Standard Equipment
The new Toyota Yaris model range will be available in a choice of four grades - Entry, Active, Style and Lounge. Tailored to offer a stronger differentiation between them, each grade will offer customers a unique style and character, with dedicated interior zones for personalisation.

Offering outstanding value for money, with a high level of interior refinement and an extremely generous standard equipment specification, the Active grade will attract new customers to the Toyota brand and is expected to represent the largest percentage of new Yaris sales.

It features soft touch dashboard and door panel trim, gun metal inserts, steering wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth switchgear, driver's seat height adjustment, and silver stitching to the leather steering wheel and gear lever surround. A full audio multimedia 6.1'' display interface with Bluetooth and USB/Aux connectivity incorporates a rear view camera, and manual air-conditioning is fitted as standard. With seven airbags, ABS and VSC, the Active grade also offers customers the highest levels of safety.

The Style grade targets younger customers, offering the highest levels of standard equipment and the most dynamic, sporting, interior trim. Externally, it features a stiffer suspension set-up, 16" alloy wheels, front fog lamps with chrome surrounds and an integral rear spoiler. The interior includes grade-exclusive colour, trim and driver's instruments, driver and front passenger's seat height adjustment and armrest, and orange stitching for the steering wheel and hand break.

The Lounge grade has been tailored to appeal to both existing Yaris owners and those downsizing from the C-segment. It features a grade-specific light grey finish for the soft touch dashboard pad and door panels, an exclusive seat trim, driver and front passenger's seat height adjustment and armrest, a newly introduced dual-zone automatic climate control system with ventilated glove box, and electric rear windows.

Toyota Touch
Reflecting today's highly connected society, on-board multimedia systems are in increasing demand by customers of every automotive segment, regardless of vehicle price or model grade. These customers require a system which gives centralized, touch screen control of the widest possible range of vehicle functions, as well as connectivity to external devices such as mobile phones and portable music players.

Toyota Touch is a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch screen interface which represents a new approach to affordable, on-board multimedia systems. Fitted, as standard, on the new Yaris from the Active grade, it incorporates AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility, and automatic phonebook synchronisation at each connection. A USB port allows for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iTunes album cover art.

On-screen vehicle information displays include remaining fuel range, instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption per minute over the last 15 minutes and time elapsed since last engine start. The system is available in the French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Russian languages.

In addition, the system incorporates a rear view camera, fitted as standard. The image is displayed on the Toyota Touch screen when reverse gear is engaged, to assist with parking manoeuvres.

Toyota Touch & Go
Building on the Toyota Touch multimedia base unit, Toyota Touch & Go equips the new Toyota Yaris with a navigation system representing the best value for money on the market.

The system includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as advanced traffic coverage, customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings and motorway signposting.

In addition, it not only offers drivers a choice of the fastest or shortest route to their destination, but also the one with the smallest environmental impact - an 'Ecological' route option. Using a compatible mobile phone, via Bluetooth, the system offers on-board connectivity to a Google Local Search function - the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world. Via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest may be downloaded for entry as destinations.

The installation of Touch & Go also upgrades the multimedia base unit with the addition of an SMS on-screen send/receive function incorporating a contact person image display, and a USB-based photo viewing function.

Several Touch & Go Apps will be available for download from launch, such as fuel price, weather and parking space information. In addition, A specific Facebook App has been developed to allow Toyota Yaris owners to stay in touch with the 180 million European Facebook users over the course of their journey.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) - Maintaining the Highest Levels of Built-in Quality in the B-segment

Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) has been building the Toyota Yaris for a decade. It remains committed to delivering vehicles with the highest levels of built-in quality in the B-segment.

The Toyota Yaris has already established a reputation for outstanding levels of Quality, Durability and Reliability. Such quality can only be assured through its comprehensive integration into every facet of the Toyota manufacturing process.

Development of the new Yaris project at TMMF was based on three key pillars:
  • First, the identification of improvement points from each of the current Toyota Yaris production areas, and the very early incorporation of these requirements into the development of the new vehicle structure.
  • Second, the guarantee of a smooth transfer of the new Yaris assembly operation to plant members through proper training and a review of fundamental skills.
  • Third, the continued improvement of built-in quality in the company's manufacturing processes, based on Toyota production System principles.

TMMF engineers were involved in the development of the new Toyota Yaris for three years before the start of production - a year and a half longer than on the previous generation vehicle.

All manufacturing and quality departments sent several engineers to Japan for between 6 to 18 months, to study and further improve the vehicle design. The feedback generated has proved highly beneficial in minimising potential production quality issues.

Key to maintaining built-in quality in the long term, TMMF also focused on ensuring that every part has been designed for more consistent quality over the course of repeated manufacture, allowing for greater control of both fitting accuracy and build quality.

Cross functional Business Reform working groups focusing on design, quality, suppliers and production were also established. Their aim is to review critical process characteristics to guarantee the built-in quality of five critical functions - braking, acceleration, turning, fuel leaks and potential fire starting points. This also further improves quality consciousness from team members, as well as strengthening warranty management and the critical process audit.

The direct involvement of suppliers in the vehicle production preparation process was also essential to ensure the highest possible quality.

This involvement takes the form of numerous diverse activities: Within an intensive supplier development programme, Toyota engineers are based at strategic supplier factories to share knowledge and assist in the achievement of the expected quality standards.

For new parts, Toyota uses Simultaneous Engineering - the early exchange of part design ideas and manufacturing techniques between the company and the supplier- as well as supplier parts tracking teams - multiple visits to the supplier to ensure quality milestones are achieved- to solve problems well before the start of production.

Immediately prior to the start of new Yaris mass production, every supplier visited TMMF on a regular basis, both before and during assembly trial periods. This allow for extensive discussion, design reviews and trial parts fitting, with the aim of identifying all potential problems.

Overall, a longer project development lead time within the Toyota plant and the early involvement of suppliers in the design process combine to guarantee the earliest possible identification of problems. Such measures are fundamental to the Toyota culture of continuous improvement, and will ensure that the new Toyota Yaris offers customers the highest levels of built-in quality in the B-segment.

Power
Delivering both performance and economy, the SsangYong Korando Sports is powered by the latest e-XDi active diesel engine. This new 2 litre engine provides maximum power of 155PS and peak torque of 360Nm delivered between 1,500rpm and 2,800rpm providing ample performance both on and off road, whatever the task.

Style
The fresh exterior design has been styled to reflect SsangYong's modern and efficient new look. From the front, it communicates a dynamic yet sophisticated appearance, featuring a mesh grille, trapezoidal bumper and stylish black headlight bezels to provide a premium touch. In profile, the sharp belt line runs to the rear bumper emphasising a sleek, sporty stance, while from the rear the wide glass area affords excellent rearward visibility.

Creature comforts
Inside the spacious cabin there's a light and airy environment thanks to the large front, side and rear windows, while the careful blending of black and metallic finishes along with an LED illuminated instrument cluster has created a smart and refined interior.

With spacious accommodation for five adults - the rear passenger seats can even be reclined by up to 29 degrees - air conditioning and Bluetooth connectivity ensure comfort and convenience.

There are two models in the range, and while the SX is already comprehensively equipped, the EX comes with the luxury touch of leather upholstery with seat warmers, powered driver's seat, distinctive 18" alloy wheels, heated, electrically adjustable and power folding door mirrors, and rear parking sensors. A 6 speed automatic transmission with cruise control is also available as an option.

Practicality
As with every SsangYong, practicality is at the core of the new pick-up's appeal. A large, flat rear deck provides a 2.04m2 load area complete with load deck liner and anchor points. An optional rigid hard top is available to provide weather protection and security to the load area, and comes with a hinged rear window that closes behind the tailgate so that the car's central locking secures and protects the contents. Styled and colour matched to complement the rest of the car, the result is a neat design that ensures form and function, and not the 'tacked on' afterthought of many retro-fit hard tops. There will also be a range of other accessories available from launch including two further load covers.

Safe, secure, sure footed
Constructed on a separate frame chassis, the mark of a serious off-roader, the new SsangYong Korando Sports offers a very rigid structure to help protect occupants in the event of a collision. Accident avoidance and a sure footed performance off road are also enhanced by the electronic stability programme (ESP) - a rare feature on most pick-ups but standard on SsangYong Korando Sports - active roll-over protection (ARP) and hill start assist (HSA).

As with all models in the SsangYong range, the new SsangYong Korando Sports is covered by a best-in-class 5 year limitless mileage warranty.

Designed to be totally transparent and give customers complete peace of mind, 'limitless' means just that: not a maximum mileage condition that some brands impose in their small print.

The one off Spada Codatronca Monza designed by Paolo, Ercole Spada and Domiziano Boschi of Spadaconcept, and built by Spadavetturesport was requested by Aznom, a well known company of Monza specialized in the world of luxury and corporate partner of Spadavetturesport.

Aznom (that realized the interior design of the car) wanted a special car dedicated to the Monza circuit for show it in all the luxury events and to strengthen the connection between the world of car design and luxury.

The one off Spada Codatronca Monza is based on the line of the 2008 Codatronca coupe but has much more extreme characteristics: its design and racing interiors bring back to memory the spyders of the '60. A extreme car as extreme and technical are the Carbon business collection products of Aznom for sportcar lovers.

Aznom chose Monza for its strong attachment with the city that houses its historic venue and the famous track Autodromo Nazionale Monza, recently main stage of the Cars 2 presentation. In that occasion Codatronca was chosen as VipCar for its uniqueness.

Spada Codatronca Monza will be only a one off, but Spadaconcept will produce a spyder (barchetta) version of the Codatronca on demand.

Spada Codatronca Monza has a tubular chassis made of aluminium that was coated with a light carbon fiber and composite materials body. The engine was developed by Italtecnica starting from a V8 7 liter engine hardly modified. Now we can find 2 rotrex centrifugal superchargers that deliver the incredible power of 720 CV with over 90 kgm of torque. The car is able to reach the 100 km/h speed in only 3 seconds (in first gear) thanks to the 6 speed transmission with a very short gear ratio, and to reach the impressive top speed of 335 km/h.

The weight of the car is only of 1.180 kg, thanks to the racing interiors requested by Aznom with Sabelt seat and belts, and the Aim steering wheel that integrates the instrumentations with data acquisition (can, GPS). The on board camera Aim Smartycam records HD videos with the overlay of the telemetry and data captured by the steering wheel.

The technical package is completed with the performance Pirelli PZero Corsa mounted on lightweight Oz Ultra-leggera wheels, and Brembo brakes, used for the cars of the FIA GT3 racing with abs and a fully adjustable suspension system always derived from FIA GT3.

The Spada Codatronca Monza will inspire a new stock model for street use for all the spyder lovers.

Touring Superleggera and Gumpert have chosen the 2011 Geneva Motor Show stage for the world premiere of the Gumpert Tornante. Touring Superleggera provided the design and body engineering while Gumpert will take care of manufacturing and sales of the next model, complementing the Gumpert range as of 2012. The Tornante is showcased at the stage of 1:1 static style model in the best Italian tradition.

Fast Tourer
Gumpert have gained a reputation for their impressive street legal racing cars. They addressed Touring Superleggera with a call for elegance, more passengers and luggage space, improved comfort, access and ventilation, and noise reduction. However, the fundamentals of performance and dynamic properties had to be respected without compromise.

At Touring, designers and body engineers started then a process of creative elimination to define the true essentials of all the parameters involved, limiting unnecessary weight and volume. The result is still a thoroughbred, just a few grades more civilized, with some extra skills for an enjoyable voyage. It is called a Fast Tourer. However, let there be no misunderstanding about its intentions.

Project development
When selecting the partner for the new model's body design, Gumpert recognised that elegance is part of the genetic code of Touring Superleggera's creations. Even more remarkably, the paradigm of elegance was applied by Touring to the race cars too. This distinctive approach was at the basis of many masterpieces, like the 1940 Mille Miglia winner BMW 328 Berlinetta, the Ferrari 166 and 340 and the inspiring Alfa Romeo 8C2900. They all were redoubtable race machines with singular grace.

In turn, Touring was intrigued by the challenge from the young, vital and ambitious sports car manufacturer, known for uncompromised orientation to efficiency, high quality engineering and the constant quest for better performance. In the development work, the teams from the two companies discovered soon that they share the same respect for efficiency and essentiality. This facilitated the subsequent stages of engineering and feasibility study, and the merger of body and chassis required only minor adjustments from both sides.

Architecture
The space frame chassis is a derivative of the apollo and features the same central engine layout. However, the requirements of accessibility and inner space have dictated a number of important changes to the rolling chassis:
  • the lateral member of the chassis is lowered by 80 mm in the door area
  • the A pillar and the windshield are rotated vertically by 2.5°
  • the B pillar is moved backwards with 100 mm allowing for 1120 mm wide gull-wing doors
  • the H point is displaced by 210 mm in height and 46 mm in length
  • the overall height is now 1215 mm
Thanks to the thorough frame engineering, the outstanding combination of lightness and torsional stiffness of the original chassis is preserved. The engineers target 100 kg and slightly lower than 40.000 Nm/degree, but the passenger compartment volume is now increased by 25% and the luggage compartment capacity is brought to 200 l.

Other modifications aim at enhanced ride comfort and drive ability:
  • the floor height is increased by 20 mm
  • the shell seats are fully adjustable, heated, with 4-point belts
  • the paddle shifters are standard feature
  • sound and heat insulation material is fitted on the floor and between the cabin and the engine compartment
  • glasses are double layer for better heat and noise insulation
  • the ventilation system capacity is improved
A crash box in the front section, adapted from Formula-1 technology, absorbs the impact energy in case of a crash, improving the passive safety. Featuring composite body panels over the light chrome-molybdenum steel space frame with carbon fibre monocoque, the construction principle mirrors the original method patented by Touring in 1936, and authorizes the symmetrical Superleggera badges on the bonnet.

Design
Unlike other Touring creations, the Gumpert Tornante is not rooted into a specific model of the Italian designer's heritage. Aesthetically, the project started from a white sheet of paper, allowing the designer's full and free focus on the challenging package of the rolling chassis and its hard points. The new model should not only offer ample performance and superb dynamic properties and aerodynamics, but also adequate levels of comfort, interior space and ergonomics. The spirit of a true dream car, but with sufficient practical features to become a safe and useable sports car in today's traffic.

The Touring accent of the Gumpert Tornante originates from specific proportions and the balance of muscular elegance and introvert power, rather than formal language. The bodywork preserves its movement even when the car stands still, and when on the move, it expresses unique, elegant fluidness.

The prominent grille within the balanced front wings characterizes the Tornante's front area. The air intakes are pronounced, reflecting the care given to the air intake surface and the overall airflow.

The well-defined waistline reflects the functional separation between the greenhouse and the lower body. The top is a light area offering extended space for driver and passenger, overall visibility and sportive but comfortable 'life on board'. The muscular, though elegant shoulders announce the stunning performance of the power unit. Both the Gumpert Tornante's doors and the boot lid open with gull-wing movement, providing easy access to the interior, the mechanics and the luggage compartment.

From the rear, the low quarter panels outline the powerful curve of the roof. Below the waistline, the very visible air diffuser evokes the research of the maximal downforce.

The overall design breaths superior potential and performance in an elegant and slightly understated way, faithful to the Touring tradition.

Power Unit
The Gumpert Tornante has the genes of the Gumpert apollo and inherits its impressive V8 biturbo engine. Weighing only 196 kg, the engine plays a major role in ensuring the ideal weight and the fascinating driving dynamics of the Tornante. An angle of 90° between the two cylinder banks is a sign of a classic 8-cylinder engine.

Starting from the pure block from Audi, the engine is a complete in-house development. Thus, the manufacturing process contains among others all the moving parts, air and fuel management, turbo chargers, charge air-duct and dry sump lubrication. In the basic version this engine delivers 700 HP. In comparison to the apollo, the configuration will be optimized for the Fast Touring mission. This means more comfort and more suitability for daily use.

Alongside the V8 power unit, an alternative powered Gumpert Tornante is also planned for 2012.

Driveline
The fully synchronised, automatic six-speed transmission guarantees efficient utilization of the remarkable energy at the back wheels. The arrangement of the gears in a longitudinal direction in the path of travel ensures a very low centre of gravity and optimum weight distribution.

Extremely short gearshifts up to 40 milliseconds (torque-to-torque) are provided by the precise TT40e transmission of the apollo, where "e" stands for electronic gear system. Gear changes are faster thanks to rocker switches on the steering wheel. The Formula 1-type technology promises the ultimate in comfort along with best driving performance.

Suspension
The apollo derived built-in suspension ideally complements the body's sophisticated aerodynamics. The Tornante owes the finely tuned sensitivity of the suspension system and the optimised exertion of power to its double transverse control arm pushrod configuration at front and rear.

The double wishbones ensure that the tires maintain optimum contact to the road surface, independently of the bound rate of suspension system. As the suspension elements are linked to the main frame, the system ensures a responsive reaction and precise handling.

Chassis
Made of top-quality and highly stable chrome-molybdenum-steel with an integrated safety cell, the round tube frame is the base and symbolic backbone of the Gumpert Tornante. Providing additional space and comfort for its passengers compared to the apollo, the Tornante will be as safe as its racetrack-dedicated brother is. The Gumpert Tornante succeeds in combining low weight and rigidity with finest driving dynamics and comfortable Fast Touring.
