Fiat Palio, 2012

  •  Fiat Palio, 2012

The successful hatchback of Fiat Automóveis with more than 2.5 million units sold in Brazil and a history of daring and innovation now conquers one more chapter: in its new generation, the Fiat Palio is totally new. It is more beautiful, robust, more comfortable, safe and larger - the Fiat Palio has grown and evolved.

Manufactured at our plant in Betim, Minas Gerais, the new Fiat Palio arrives at the Brazilian market as a natural evolution of its predecessors: improved, impressive, absolute, in perfect harmony with its customer's desires. Its attractive design, completely reworked by Centro Stile Fiat in Italy, is modern and harmonious, exquisite and sporty, and immediately shows that it is a Fiat, but also displaying its strong personality.

The evolution transforms the look of the new Fiat Palio, and leaves it longer, wider, higher and with a larger wheelbase: beneficial to all passengers who can now enjoy more internal space and comfort. Besides, the comfort is enhanced by careful reformulation of the cabin, which create an environment that is pleasant - in which all elements and volumes are in harmony in the contours, colors and textures - and functional.

Three engines power the new Fiat Palio: Fire 1.0 EVO, Fire 1.4 EVO and 1.6 16V E.torQ, all of them Flex. The 1.6 16V versions can come with mechanical or Dualogic® transmission. In total, the new model hits the market with six versions to please all tastes, needs and budgets. They are: Attractive 1.0, Attractive 1.4, Essence 1.6 16V, Essence1.6 16V Dualogic, Sporting 1.6 16V and Sporting 1.6 16VDualogic.

The Fiat Palio is also very complete and brings in its equipment list various contents that serve to further enhance the comfort and safety of passengers such as lateral and frontal airbags, ABS brakes, leather steering wheel with radio controls, gear-shift butterfly-type switch on the wheel, twilight and rain sensors, cruise control, windshield heater, CD player with MP3 and iPod/USB inputs, fog lamps, rear hatch Logo push, switchblade key with remote control, among many other items.

The hatchback also comes with yet another innovation: the owner of the new Fiat Palio can choose from several items to customize the car, which can be direct from the factory or at dealerships. There are several lines of stickers, badges and liners for the consumer to choose.

The development of the new Fiat Palio required about 824,000 hours from the company's engineers. During the process, 526 prototypes, test vehicles and pre-series were built. They were submitted to 61,434 virtual tests, 61,583 physical tests, and driven for more than 1.7 million kilometers before the final product could now hit the streets. Almost 3,300 new components make up the car. In terms of quality, reliability, endurance and strength, no effort was spared to provide the Fiat customer the best.

TOTALLY NEW DESIGN FOR A WHOLE NEW CAR
The Fiat Palio that now hits the streets represents a step beyond in relation to the former hatchback - it is bigger and finer. The entirely contemporary design by Centro Stile Fiat, Italy, is completely in tune with global trends, but also refers to the identity of the Fiat brand. It shares the stage with functionality, practicality and accurate finishing, making the new Fiat Palio a reference model in its segment.

A significant change that attracts much attention to the new Fiat Palio is its size. Its dimensions are noticeably larger than those of the previous Palio. The car has grown: 31 mm in width; 60 mm in height, 28 mm in length; and 47.3 mm in wheelbase. Despite being a compact car, these larger dimensions really contribute to raise passenger comfort and more intelligent use of internal space.

The body of the new Fiat Palio was developed in accordance with the latest design criteria. The goal was to obtain a lightweight body (compared to competitors) while keeping optimal structural performance. To this end, more resistant materials were used, allowing for the reduction of thickness and hence the weight of components, without loss of structural targets. The use of strategically placed reinforcements also contributed to increase occupant protection.

Italian style in a car 100% Brazilian
Outwardly, everything is different. The new Fiat Palio brings the DNA of Italian design that combines functionality with a beautiful aesthetic quality. Its high and sloping waistline defines the model's vocation by revealing sportsmanship. In addition, the highly tilted windshield denotes dynamism. The soft curves form a profile between hatchback and minivan with modernity and sophistication. The harmonious and dynamic design of the windows in conjunction with the side crease, which rises in the front fender and ends at the rear elongates the model, determines an element of beauty and grandiosity.

The front with rounded and voluminous lines received drop-shaped, bi-parabola headlights, representing modernity and personality. The robust bumper with geometric niches for the fog lamps gives the impression of strength and gallantry. The high and majestic air intake has a horizontal strip, which receives the front number plate of the vehicle. And the Fiat logo is flanked by elegant chrome trim similar to the 500 theme. Well positioned creases "tie-in" all elements.

Smooth surfaces predominate on the side, defined by lines and subtle curves. The waistline begins from the outer corner of the headlight bordering along the windows and on the C column, and extending to the rear window. This line brings harmony to the entire body. Another stronger crease runs on the side, embedding the doorknobs and meeting with the outer corner of the headlight. The car roof makes a slight curve toward the rear, and the windows follow the curve, radiating dynamism and energy. The protruding wheel housings serve as an element of surprise, breaking the great lateral plane and merging with the bumpers.

On the rear the focus is on the lamps. Elongated vertically and with many of the original traits, they invade the region of the rear window, and call attention to their boldness and functionality, as they are easily seen by other drivers. In addition, they make the model exclusive. Bicolor lenses add to the modernity of the body.

The brake-light in LED has a long service life and offers excellent viewing for those coming behind and still gives the car a sportier look. The large rear window and gently curved trunk lid with beveled edges create an appealing visual plane, which is complemented by the robust bumper. This embeds the same black strip as the front bumper. The entire rear refers to robustness and modernity.

The optical systems in the new Palio deserve highlight. The biparabola headlight has greater high and low photometric intensity of beams, which ensure a high luminous flux. The bulbs in the headlights were designed to simulate daylight as much as possible, which allows for a more homogeneous distribution, with greater depth and realism of the scenario. The turbine shape of the tail lights, of both the parking and brake lights, make it exclusive.

The new model also comes with independent tail reflector separate from the turn lights. Positioned in the bumper, they are traditionally more visible on the highways or in city streets.

Great refinement and comfort on board
Internally, the new Fiat Palio is also full of surprises. Ample internal space especially for a car in the AB segment, exquisite finishing and many details of comfort technology increase the pleasure to drive and to travel in the vehicle. Special attention was given to the harmonization of all elements - dashboard, steering wheel, radio, speakers and fabrics - in such a way as to create a warm and refined, but always functional environment.

All functional surfaces of the car are covered by panels, giving the cabin a very polished and pleasant to the touch aspect. The storage compartments, which extend the convenience and organization, are everywhere. Depending on the version, they can be a total of 17: four on the dashboard, four in the center console, eight on the doors, and one on the trunk cover.

The wraparound seats are new and designed to be more ergonomic and more comfortable. Its structure is light and strong, and very safe. The front seats have antisubmarining system and aft adjustment via rail. The driver's seat can come with height adjustment by lever arms and supports for comfort. The rear seat offers two positions on the back to increase the volume of the trunk. It can also be folded flat, creating a larger luggage space. All head restraints of seats and arm rests have the pourinplace technology, which means "inject" the foam directly into the fabric, enabling the creation of new and more ergonomic shapes.

One of the new features that draw the most attention on the dashboard is the instruments panel - 100% designed and developed in Brazil by Magneti Marelli. It comes with White LCD, which ensures better visibility of the display, bright new graphics and pointers across the bar, where the arrangement of elements is entirely three-dimensional. It also features WelcomeMoving, which make the instrument indicators move and perform a systems check, and greeting to the driver on the turn of the key. The lighting of the dashboard turns on and off gradually, following the movement of the indicators.

In the versions Attractive and Essence, the dashboard's background is black and contains a speedometer, tachometer, clock and partial and full digital odometers, coolant thermometer, analog fuel gauge, and pilot lights. The numbers are in white with red pointers, in easy to read format, without distracting the driver.

The Sporting version received a different dashboard. It contains the same meters of the other versions, but with numbers in larger screen printing gradient and white indicators, and the "Sporting" logo in the center.

Another important point was the development of Color and Trim, when Fiat's designers sought through new technologies the best balance of colors, fabrics and textures for both the internal and external looks of the new Palio.

A highlight of this work is the insertmolding - the central strip that runs horizontally across the panel - which along with the new fabric of the seats and door panels, forms the principal item of internal customization of the new Fiat Palio. With patterns specific to each version, the assembly can be replaced with other colors and prints for customers who want to customize their car.

With the new volume of the interior of the Fiat Palio, the audio system was also configured and positioned to achieve optimal acoustic performance. The package consists of an amplified reception antenna, two front speakers MidWoofer, two rear Full Range speakers, and two front Tweeters. The CD MP3 player is part of the dashboard and adds to its sophistication. The system also features a USB/iPod connection and Bluetooth® for hands free phone. Another innovation in the model is the option of radio controls on the steering wheel.

The indoor comfort is completed with the engineering work of by Fiat in the air-conditioning system. The excellent result of the new Fiat Palio positioned it as the best the market reference among manual systems.

EXCELLENT STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE
The structure of the new car was designed to meet the best safety requirements of the global market. In the body, the high-strength materials were used on a large scale, resulting in increased rigidity, improved safety performance and reduction in body weight by 15%.

These components with high strength materials comprise 35% of the body structure. They were also used in 30% of the moving parts of the structure and 34% of the structure of the doors. In addition the door safety has been increased against lateral collision and burglary with the use of ultraresistant materials and with the new lateral protection bars in omega profile.

All of these interventions in the new car resulted in excellent structural performance, weight reduction, improved performance and enhanced safety. In addition to all aspects that enhance passive safety, the new Fiat Palio can also be equipped with four airbags, two in the front and two on the sides. In terms of active safety, we highlight the ABS brakes with EBD.

Another strong point of the new Fiat Palio is its suspension. Featuring an entirely new and more robust structure, it is designed and calibrated to provide comfort for occupants in all driving conditions - that is, it absorbs the irregularities of the floor and the lateral and longitudinal oscillations coming from it or from maneuvers - and ensures the stability of vehicle, keeping the tire traction on the ground.

To this end, various technical solutions were adopted:
  •     Front suspension. It has lower arms in the form of rectangular triangle. The goal is to minimize the effect of the braking load in curves and ensure better balance in all operating conditions.
  •     Rear suspension. The torsion axle and semi-independent wheels result in high torsional rigidity and appropriate flexibility.
  •     Rubber cushion attached to the body. It has been optimized to improve dynamic response in curves.
  •     Dimensions of elastic cushions. They were increased to better dampen road roughness, increasing driving comfort.
  •     Dampers designed and calibrated to achieve the ideal balance between driving comfort and curve stability thresholds.

The DS line, comprising the DS3, DS4 and DS5, is produced in France and sold internationally. The Citroën DS5 will be launched in Russia, Latin America and China in 2012.

Citroën DS5: DARE TO SURPRISE, ALWAYS ATTRACT
Innovative and visionary, the Citroën DS5 openly states its difference. It is an object of pleasure, an emotional vehicle that stirs the imagination, transforming each trip into a unique journey.

An aerodynamic sculpture
The Citroën DS5 had a bold source of inspiration: the C-SportLounge concept car. The objective for the Marque was to go even further with the real production vehicle.

The Citroën DS5 surprises. By its style, by its singular proportions and by its instantly recognisable silhouette. The one-in-a-million body looks like a shooting break possessed by the spirit of a Gran Turismo.

A unique creation, the Citroën DS5 is an aerodynamic sculpture made of now flowing now taut lines, promising the onlooker an amazing drive.

The front end instantly identifies the Citroën DS5 as a member of the DS family with an oversized air intake, a wide, chrome-plated grille housing the chevrons, and an incisive gaze underscored by the LED light signature.

The Citroën DS5 fully expresses its personality in profile. The body exudes vitality and the promise of a well-appointed interior. The sculpted sides catch the eye and create a play of shadow and light. The light is reflected by a slender chrome sabre running from the tip of the headlamp to the front windows. The sabre, cast in one piece, signs the exterior styling of the Citroën DS5. The shadow of the flanks is cradled in the recessed curves of the rear wing, a distinctive characteristic of DS line vehicles.

The rear view further underlines the rank of the Citroën DS5 on the road. The car sits squarely on wide tracks, underlined by twin exhaust pipes built into the rear bumper and highlighted by a rear signature of six light guides.

The design approach of the Citroën DS5 combines these good looks with aerodynamic efficiency. The side air intakes on the bumper visually widen the front end while channelling the air flow around the wheels. The one-piece polycarbonate quarter-light features built-in aerodynamic deflectors. The result is an extremely aerodynamic design, with a Cx of just 0.29 and an SCx of 0.69 m2.

Powerfully bewitching with its sharp gaze, amazingly attractive with its refined detailing, and definitively extraordinary with its daring silhouette, the Citroën DS5 appeals, naturally.

Elegance down to the last detail
The body is cloaked in an alternation of chrome-finished details (side strips, double tail pipe, sabre) and gloss blacks (front and rear bumper strips, window weather strips), together with generously sized diamond-effect alloy wheels (from 16 to 19 inches) whose design expresses movement.

The Citroën DS5 is available in eight body colours, and the chrome work also comes in a smoked version called "Dark Chrome".

Charismatic cabin
Charisma and appeal are in abundance inside. The Citroën DS5 expresses its singularity with a uniquely styled cabin, inspired by the world of aviation and fully delivering on the promise of the exterior styling.

The cockpit roof is the most symbolic feature. A new interpretation of the sunroof adapted to the Citroën DS5 universe, the cockpit roof is divided into three wells of light (0.58 m2 of glazed area), each one of which can be covered individually, and creates an original light signature day and night.

The driver-focused driving position combines the posture of a coupé with the style of a Gran Turismo. Highlights include a wraparound dashboard, vertical steering wheel with a broad wheel centre, driver-oriented information, and a wide central console with a small gear stick positioned in the natural continuation of the driver's forearm.

The main controls are grouped in the centre of the vehicle in two central consoles, one positioned lower down and one on the ceiling, equipped with buttons, thumb wheels and special toggles, to be handled with a pilot's touch. A feast for the imagination.

The Citroën DS5 also benefits from Citroën's finest expertise in quality and refinement. It boasts authentic, premium materials such as finest-grain club leather and aluminium touches, some with a rubbed finish. The seat upholstery - including "Sportlounge", combining vitality with refinement, and "Watchstrap", a true signature of the DS line - is unique on the market. The specially designed central console uses multiplex technology that offers considerable stylistic liberty. Citroën expertise is visible in the great care paid to each detail.

ORIGINAL ONBOARD EXPERIENCE
Motorists increasingly are looking for cars that are easy to use day to day while fully delivering on driving pleasure. The architecture of the Citroën DS5 was designed to reconcile fun at the wheel with comfort, and aesthetics with practicality.

Compact and roomy
The Citroën DS5 is an outstanding car with an intelligent design that transcends the usual compromises between driving pleasure and shared well-being. This daring challenge was met with out-and-out success.

At 4.53 m long (25 cm shorter than a Citroën C5 saloon), 1.85 m wide and 1.51 m high, the DS5 is sleek and compact. This compact design brings two advantages: more agility and responsiveness but also improved fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions.
The compact exterior in no way undermines cabin comfort. On the contrary. The Citroën DS5's generous boot volume, of up to 468 litres VDA, rivals that of a Sportwagon. The DS5 also has five real seats, five doors and saloon-like rear accessibility and spaciousness.
Alongside the usual storage areas, including the glovebox and those in the door panels, the central console has a 13-litre double storage compartment under the armrest. The upper part of this compartment features Jack and USB sockets for connecting mobile devices unobtrusively. The lower part, cooled and lighted, can hold a 1.5-litre bottle. The upper console on the cockpit ceiling includes two eyewear storage areas that push open, while the driver gets a storage compartment located next to his or her left hand.

A show on the road
Cabin lighting plays a key role in the Citroën DS5 onboard experience. The LED-based interior lighting gradually lights up the cabin. The driver simply pushes the hands-free start-up button to bring the cabin to life. The transparent colour head-up display is deployed to display essential driving information, the three digital pads and instrument cluster needle spring into life. The ambient lighting creates a display of intermittent reds and whites around the driving position: red for the "radio" and "navigation" zones and the door-opening controls, and white for the cockpit console, air conditioning and hybrid thumb wheel… You're already on the road.

A velvet-smooth atmosphere
The amazing experience on board the Citroën DS5 is also a result of the velvet-smooth atmosphere, with cushioned, dull sounds. Acoustic treatment on the DS5 is similar to that of other recent Citroëns, with excellent insulation from exterior noise, filtered road noise and suppressed wind noise.

To achieve this result, soundproofing and sound absorption applied as close as possible to the sources of the noise. Each part of the Citroën DS5 was acoustically treated:
  •     The body and opening panels (stiffness, polycarbonate rear quarter-light, laminated side windows, reinforced structure of windscreen pillars).
  •     The engine compartment (absorbent material in scuttle vent, on mud flaps, suspension support, brake amplifier, engine shield).
  •     The cabin (absorbent material in dashboard, air conditioning, entire air extraction system, upholstery sealing).

Onboard technologies
Together with comfort equipment, including dual-zone automatic air conditioning with three air flow levels (soft, medium, intense), the Citroën DS5 is available with a comprehensive range of audio and telematics equipment to enhance travelling comfort:
  •     The USB and Jack connection are built in to the central armrest, for connecting mobile devices unobtrusively. The mobile device is then controlled using the audio system controls. The Citroën DS5 is also available with a 12V socket located behind the central console.
  •     The audio system features ARKAMYS acoustic processing software for spatialised sound, producing authentic sound and distributing it evenly throughout the cabin.
  •     For even more impressive musical sensations, a high-end hi-fi system has been developed with DENON. Comprising ten speakers (including an amplified subwoofer in the boot, a central channel in the dashboard and two tweeters in the rear doors) and a digital amplifier, the new system creates a vast sound landscape in the cabin that is well-positioned, consistent and true to the recordings. It reproduces extreme low bass, treble and low medium sounds as faithfully as possible.
  •     The Citroën DS5 can also be equipped with the latest-generation in-car MyWay navigation. The system includes a high-resolution 7-inch colour widescreen, internal memory where mapping data is stored, speed limit sign reminders, and Bluetooth audio streaming for listening to music files stored on mobile phones.

Accessories for enhancing car travel
The Citroën DS5 is available with a range of accessories for enhancing car travel:
  •     A 230 V/USB socket is available on all trim levels for charging laptops, musical devices, cameras and mobile phones.
  •     Citroën WiFi On Board enables passengers to use the web during car travel. The WiFi box features a wireless connection for four devices simultaneously and works with the SIM card of the customer's internet 3G/3G+ key subscribed with the operator of their choice. Passengers can use the web connection to access their emails, instant messaging services, practical information and online games, all at the same time.
  •     A multi-player Philips DVD equipped with two independent attachable screens ensures relaxed long journeys while bringing entertainment to the rear passengers.
  •     Lastly, a multimedia support compatible with most screens measuring up to 13 inches or 330 mm (ideal for iPads, DVD players and Netbooks) can be fitted on the stalks of the front headrest and inclined for enhanced viewing comfort.

TECHNOLOGY AND PERFORMANCE
The Citroën DS5 features the very best in technology to provide an easy and relaxed drive combined with satisfying at-the-wheel sensations.

Technology for driving
For stable and efficient road manners, the Citroën DS5 is fitted with electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist and ABS, as well as a new Citroën innovation, intelligent traction control, combined with ESP for optimum vehicle control in the most delicate driving situations..

The DS5 is also equipped as standard with the Citroën eTouch service to remain connected in all circumstances. eTouch is a secure and free system available 24/7 using a built-in SIM card, notably including localised emergency and assistance calls (depending on country) to get the emergency services to the car as quickly as possible in the event of an incident or accident. Citroën eTouch features two additional services via the web: a virtual maintenance manual, for alerts on mechanical or safety incidents and information on upcoming servicing, and an eco-driving service, for monitoring fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

In true Citroën spirit, the DS5 is a concentrate of simply obvious technologies. It was designed with useful and intuitive innovation in mind to make driving easier. Together with tried and tested technologies such as hill-start assist, an electric parking brake, parking assist and a programmable speed limiter-cruise control, the Citroën DS5 is fitted with:
  •     automatic high-beam lamps. A miniature camera built into the interior door mirror processes the images received to manage the automatic high beam lights, switching them on and off as necessary, in line with ambient lighting and traffic conditions, for stress-free driving at night.
  •     a second-generation lane departure warning system, with enhanced predictive capabilities. Lane departures, signalled via a vibration in the driver's seat, are detected by a miniature camera built in to the rearview mirror and road-line recognition technology based on digital imagery. This technology is used to counter the problem of drowsiness at the wheel.
  •     colour head-up display. A transparent blade, rising up when the car is started, projects essential driving information (speed, speed limiter-cruise control settings and navigation settings) in the driver's direct line of sight. For Hybrid4 models, when the vehicle is running without consuming fuel, the display changes colour from white to blue, encouraging an ecological driving style. Drivers are left to concentrate on the essential.
  •     reversing camera. Working with the MyWay navigation system, the reversing camera sends a colour image to the navigation screen. Using visual markers (red lines for the limits of the rear bumpers and blue lines for maximum wheel turn), drivers can manoeuvre their vehicles in complete safety.
  •     fog lamps with static cornering lights. This system adds an extra beam when cornering to increase visibility of the inner part of the bend or intersection by up to 75° to the left and right of the car. This equipment springs into action automatically when the driver uses his indicator or when the steering wheel turn exceeds 60°.
  •     hands-free access and starting. Drivers enter and start their vehicle with simple, intuitive actions while keeping the key on their person. The electronic key is detected when approaching the vehicle, the doors open and close with just the slightest brush against the handle, and the car starts with a simple push on the START button.

Dynamic road performance
The Citroën DS5 provides all-new driving sensations with a unique at-the-wheel experience combining dynamic handling and ride comfort:
  •     The springing and damping settings provide a perfect "read" of the road while remaining easy to control. The dynamically tuned Citroën DS5 gives occupants the impression of being glued to the road while bringing passengers a feeling of safety in all circumstances.
  •     - The precise and direct steering of the Citroën DS5 contributes to the car's dynamic feel. With hydraulic electric pump assistance, it offers a gradual and hearty response without being too delicate, especially on straight lines.
  •     Lastly, along with active safety equipment (EBD, EBA, ABS, ESP, intelligent traction control), the Citroën DS5 has powerful brakes with a firm response, thanks in particular to 340 mm-diameter front brakes on most versions.

Four fuel engines
The third model of the DS line will be available on launch with two Euro V diesel engines equipped with particulate filters: the e-HDi 110 Airdream (EGS6), with new-generation Stop&Start micro-hybrid technology reducing CO2 emissions by up to 15%, and the HDi 160 (6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic), boasting remarkable performance for a pleasant and safe drive.

The Citroën DS5 is also powered by two turbocharged petrol powerplants with direct injection, both of them Euro V compliant and developed with BMW: the THP 155 (6-speed auto) and the THP 200 (6-speed manual). The THP 200 offers a remarkable drive with power of 147 kW and maximum torque of 275 Nm at 1,770 rpm.

The first Citroën with Hybrid4 technology
The DS5 is the first Citroën fitted with full-hybrid Hybrid4 technology combining the on-road performance of an HDi diesel and the efficiency of electric power. The system provides heady driving pleasure - with 200 bhp, four drive wheels, electric mode in cities, accelerator boost - along with extra low CO2 emissions, at just 99 g/km.

The originality of the Hybrid4 system lies in a blend of several technologies:
  •     a 2.0 HDi 160 DPFS internal-combustion engine,
  •     Stop&Start system with a second-generation reversible alternator,
  •     automated 6-speed manual gearbox with optimised shifts,
  •     permanent magnet synchronous motor located on a special multi-link rear axle developing power of 27 kW (37 bhp),
  •     the Power Train Management Unit, which automatically manages the settings of the two engines with a view to reduced fuel consumption.

Hybrid4 technology offers several different driving settings. Using the thumb wheel on the central console, drivers choose from one of four modes: Auto, ZEV, 4 Wheel Drive and Sport.

"Auto" is the default setting. To optimise fuel consumption it automatically handles switches between the fuel engine and the electric motor.
"ZEV" (for Zero Emission Vehicle) is for driving with the electric motor only, for speeds of up to 60 km/h. Range in ZEV mode is between 2 km and 3 km, after which the car automatically switches back to "Auto".
"4 Wheel Drive" is used when drivers need enhanced grip at low speeds. The front wheels are powered by the internal-combustion engine and the back wheels by the electric motor. Ideal for tough ground and low-grip situations such as snow, mud and sand.
"Sport" provides extra responsiveness and vitality by making maximum use of the electric motor on top of the fuel engine. Accelerations and gear changes are revitalised by an electric "boost".

The introduction of the all-new 2013 ES350 and ES300h marks the sixth generation of Lexus' popular luxury sedan since its introduction over 20 years ago. Featuring the signature Lexus spindle grille, a progressive new design and enhanced handling, the ES brings new levels of refinement and quality to the entry luxury segment. Now available with Lexus Hybrid Drive, the ES is sure to impress new and loyal consumers.

Engine
For the first time, the Lexus ES will be available with Lexus Hybrid Drive. Featuring a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine, the ES300h is expected to earn EPA fuel economy ratings of approximately 40 mpg city, 39 mpg highway and 39 mpg combined. The ES300h generates 200 total system horsepower.

The new, low friction engine utilizes a sophisticated power management system and high compression ratio (12.5:1) to increase overall efficiency. Equipped with an electric water pump, electric power steering, and an integrated hybrid electric motor/generator, this engine does not require any accessory belts. The beltless design helps improve fuel economy and overall reliability.

The Lexus ES350 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine with Dual VVT-i that delivers 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,700. The six-speed sequential-shift automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) provides enhanced driving performance, fuel efficiency and smooth shifts. Low friction materials further improve efficiency and help with the ES350's EPA-fuel economy estimates of 21 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

Both the Lexus ES350 and ES300h feature a Drive Mode selector. Normal mode provides a blend of performance and efficiency that is suited to everyday driving, while Eco mode favors fuel economy. Sport mode increases powertrain and steering responsiveness, and for the ES300h, the IP changes from the hybrid power monitor to a tachometer. The ES300h adds an EV mode which allows short distance drives, at reduced speed, using only the power from the hybrid battery pack.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
Suspension changes, a stiffer body and a quicker steering gear ratio deliver more precise handling in the new 2013 Lexus ES.

The front suspension employs opposite-wound coil springs to help enhance straight-line stability. Revised rear suspension geometry and improved shock absorber damping characteristics enhance ride comfort. The steering gear ratio has been reduced from 16.1:1 to 14.8:1 to help deliver a more responsive and direct steering feel. Increased body rigidity is achieved through lightweight, high tensile strength steel, added bracing and more spot welds. Airflow is smoothed beneath the vehicle, improving stability and fuel economy, and reducing drag.

Porsche Panamera Diesel, 2012

  •  Porsche Panamera Diesel, 2012

From Berlin to Bologna on only one tank of fuel: With a range in excess of 1,200 kilometres (~746 miles) the new Porsche Panamera Diesel is a good bet as a distinctly economical GT saloon. The long-range cruiser with an impressive turn of speed combines the sporty attributes of Porsche's Gran Turismo family with typical diesel characteristics such as exemplary fuel economy and oodles of pulling power. In the process, the new four-door car provides yet another prime example of "Porsche Intelligent Performance", reflected in each and every development.

The engine characteristics of the new Panamera Diesel enable it to take sprints and climbs effortlessly in its stride. Typically for a diesel, 550 Newton metres of rated torque - 50 Nm more than for the Panamera S with V8 engine - are applied to the crankshaft between 1,750 rpm and 2,750 rpm. Twinned with the highly efficient eight-speed Tiptronic S, this power development enables the Gran Turismo to achieve in-gear acceleration from 80 km/h to 120 km/h (~50 mph to 75 mph) in 4.5 seconds, for example.

Visually the Porsche Panamera Diesel resembles the Panamera with the V6 petrol engine, the exterior difference being the "diesel" lettering on the front doors and the tailpipe covers specially developed for the diesel. In terms of its driving dynamics and comfort, the new fourdoor vehicle is a genuine Porsche Gran Turismo through and through. It features steel springs as standard. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adaptive damper control and adaptive air suspension with additional air volume are available as an option. This makes for a very wide spread of suspension characteristics with further enhance ments to ride comfort on the one hand and very sporty driving dynamics on the other.

The combination of such a high level of efficiency and performance cannot be achieved by high-quality drive concepts alone. The "Porsche Intelligent Performance" principle is also apparent in the rigorous lightweight design. For example, axles, doors, bonnet, wings and rear lid are made of aluminium to keep the vehicle weight low. Developed from the outset as a four-seater vehicle, in terms also of interior design and the individual comfort of each and every occupant the Gran Turismo ploughs its own furrow. Notwithstanding its distinctive flat and stretched silhouette, 4.97 metres in length and a mere 142 centimetres high, the Porsche Panamera Diesel sets the standard in its class for a sense of space on all four seats.

Highly efficient: V6 diesel with 2000 bar injection pressure
The three-litre, six-cylinder V engine under the Porsche Panamera Diesel's bonnet is the state of the art in diesel technology: Auto start/stop function, common rail direct injection through piezo valves at a pressure of 2000 bar, turbocharging employing an electrically controlled variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) and emission control achieved by controlled exhaust gas recirculation, oxidation catalyst and particle filter. This is how high performance, generous torque and low consumption find themselves accompanied by smooth running, reliability and low emissions. The Panamera Diesel satisfies the Euro 5 limit values and is approved accordingly. The V6 works so efficiently that only relatively little heat remains to be evacuated by the cooling water. To ensure comfortable passenger compartment temperatures despite cold weather the heating system is supplemented by an auxiliary heater.

Even more economical with auto start/stop function and electrical system recuperation
The Porsche Panamera Diesel features an auto start/stop function that automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stationary and the brake pedal is kept depressed - for example at traffic lights or in congestion. If the brake is released the system restarts the engine. The function's processes are optimised to such an extent that restarting is particularly spontaneous. The function economises on fuel and reduces CO2 emissions, without the driver having to modify his driving habits. Audio and communication systems continue to work despite the engine being switched off; the air conditioning system ensures that the selected temperature is maintained The engine restarts if more energy or cooling capacity is required. The auto start/stop function can be activated or deactivated by pressing a button. In certain situations the function is inactive, for example when the outside temperature is very high, on steep gradients or when the battery charge is low.

As in all Panamera models, electrical system recuperation also provides additional fuel economy with the battery being charged primarily during braking phases. When the car is accelerating, on the other hand, the alternator's charging current is reduced - the combustion engine doesn't need to supply as much power for charging the battery.

Basic engine with balance shaft, rocker arm and swirl flap
The basic engine in the new Porsche Panamera Diesel comprises a crankcase with two banks of cylinders disposed at an angle of 90 degrees to one another and made of vermicular graphite cast iron. A balance shaft is fitted to improve smooth running. The six cylinders have an 83 millimetre (~3.3 inches) bore, the piston stroke is 91.4 (3.6 inches) millimetres yielding a total displacement of 2,967 cc. The aluminium cylinder heads each accommodate two camshafts and four vertically mounted valves per cylinder. The valves are actuated by low friction rocker arms with hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements. The vertically mounted and centrally located injector is located directly above the central piston recess. This design ensures a good mixture formation, resulting in low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions.

The manifold serving both banks of cylinders contains a continuously variable swirl flap. Depending on the engine speed and load, the swirl flap position controls the degree of swirl of the intake air. The flap is shut when the engine is idling and at low revs. This induces a pronounced swirl effect for improved mixture formation. From an engine speed of approximately 1,250 rpm, the flap is open continuously. The increased air throughput ensures that the combustion chamber is well charged. From an engine speed of approximately 2,750 rpm, the swirl flap is fully open.

Precision injection system with piezo-controlled injectors
The six-cylinder engine is supplied with fuel via a common rail system in which the diesel fuel is at a pressure of up to 2000 bar and is made available to the injectors by means of short injector rails. This presents three significant advantages: The injection pressure is virtually freely-selectable in the characteristic map, the high injection pressure permits an optimal mixture formation and the injection sequence with its pre-, main and post-injections can be designed to be very flexible.

The fuel is injected into the combustion chambers by piezo-controlled injectors that switch within less than one ten thousandth of a second. The opposite piezoelectric effect is used to control the piezo-actuator: At a voltage of 110 - 148 volts, the piezo actuator expands by up to 0.03 mm. This effect is applied to the nozzle needle, thereby opening the injection duct. Compared with magnetically controlled injection valves, in piezo technology the moving mass of the nozzle needle has been reduced by approximately 75 per cent.

This weight reduction makes for very short switching times, precisely controllable injection quantities and consequently several highly accurate injections per work cycle. In the Porsche Panamera Diesel engine as many as five partial injections per work cycle are envisaged depending on the operating point: At low engine revolutions the work cycle is initiated by two pre-injections, the injection of the main quantity is followed by two post-injections. This concept combines low emissions with a smooth combustion process.

VTG supercharger for optimal boost pressure adjustment
A variable geometry turbocharger and downstream charge air cooler supplies the combustion air. As in the 911 Turbo, the turbocharger features adjustable guide-blades which can be used to modify the turbine's pressure build-up characteristics. At low engine revolutions, the adjustable guide-blades make for high torque and good responsiveness by ensuring the turbine achieves a high pressure build-up and thus capacity for work with guide-blades "closed" and mass flow rates still low. When engine revolutions increase, the guide-blades are continuously opened, thereby ensuring the lowest possible fuel consumption by reducing the exhaust backpressure. The guide-blades are adjusted by an electric motor, ensuring very fast and precise guide-blade adjustment and thus spontaneous engine response.

At full load the maximum boost pressure is approximately 2.5 bar and is generated in excess of engine speeds of 1,750 rpm. To achieve a high cylinder charge and thus a spontaneous build-up of torque combined with low component temperatures, the air compressed, and thus heated, by the turbocharger has to be cooled back down again. This task is performed by two charge-air cooler on the side of the front-end.

Sophisticated exhaust system ensures exemplary low emissions performance
The sophisticated exhaust system ensures that the current Euro 5 standard limits are comfortably met. According to the engine's characteristic map, a proportion of the untreated gases is already fed back into the combustion process through the exhaust gas recircu lation circuit. The ensuing supply of inert gases causes the peak combustion temperature to be reduced, thereby cutting nitrogen oxide emissions. A cooler in the exhaust gas recirculation circuit ensures a further reduction in combustion temperature and also that a greater quan tity of exhaust gases can be recirculated.

Downstream of the turbocharger, the exhaust gases pass successively through the oxidation catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter (DPF) and silencer. The extent to which the particulate filter is clogged with soot is calculated by two pre-programmed clogging models in the engine control system. One of the models is calculated from the user's driving profile together with signals from exhaust gas temperatures and oxygen sensor. The other clogging model is provided by the flow resistance in the DPF, calculated using signals from the exhaust gas pressure sensor, the exhaust gas temperature sensor and air mass meter.

The particulate filter needs to be regenerated at regular intervals to prevent it from clogging with soot particles, thus impairing its operation. The soot particles that have accumulated in the particle filter are burned during the regeneration process. A distinction is drawn between passive regeneration of the catalytically-coated particulate filter (without involving the engine control system) and active regeneration (involving the engine control system). Both processes take place unnoticed by the driver. Thanks to DPF technology, particulate emission is as low as a mere 7.6 per cent of the permitted limit value.

Tiptronic S with special shift program
The Porsche Panamera Diesel is available exclusively with the eight-speed Porsche automatic transmission, the Tiptronic S. Its control program was specially tailored to the diesel engine: Because of the narrow speed range the shift point settings are totally different to those in the Panamera S Hybrid, which is the only other Gran Turismo to be equipped with the eightspeed transmission. In practice the Panamera Diesel's shift behaviour is largely similar to that of a Gran Turismo with PDK transmission. The shift points in the diesel Tiptronic S are customised to driving style and route profile. Alternatively, as is usual with Porsche, the gear can be changed manually by a rocker switch on the steering wheel or by lightly touching the selector lever. In order to transmit the V6's high torque with the minimum of loss, the converter features a lockup clutch. To save fuel, the Tiptronic S features stationary decoupling synchronised with the auto start/stop function, automatically selecting the neutral position if the foot brake is activated when the vehicle is stationary, the engine is running and the road surface is level.

Greater dynamics via the sport button
In common with all the other Panameras, the new diesel model enables the driver to press the sport button to choose between standard tuning and a sport mode. With sport mode activated, the engine responds more spontaneously and the accelerator pedal characteristic curve becomes steeper. The automatic transmission, along with air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) if applicable, are also tuned to make them correspondingly sportier. The auto start/stop function is also deactivated.

Steel spring suspension as standard, PASM and air suspension if desired
The Porsche Panamera Diesel features steel spring suspension as standard. On the front axle it comprises fully load-bearing steel spring struts with integrated twin tube dampers and a spring damper unit on the rear axle. The new diesel model as well features aluminium double-wishbone suspension at the front and aluminium multi-link suspension at the rear for gui ding the axles. As a result, the steel spring suspension delivers sporty and comfortable handling, enabling the Panamera to respond instantly and with aplomb to different road surface conditions.

Active PASM is available as an option. This continuously adjusts the damper forces depending on road surface conditions and driving style. The damper settings can be adjusted by the driver in three stages - Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus. Porsche also offers adaptive air suspension including PASM as an option. This provides a load compensation levelling sy stem, three-stage height adjustment and controllable auxiliary volume for modifying the spring rate. This makes for a wide variation in handling between comfortable and very sporty.

Superior brake system, with ceramic system as an option
The Porsche Panamera Diesel's braking system is designed for performance with Porsche's trade mark stopping power. The braking power on the front axle is provided by six-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes and 360 millimetre diameter brake discs. Four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes and 330 millimetre diameter brake discs are fitted on the rear axle. Porsche Stability Management (PSM), featured as standard, contains the brake assistant, vehicle-trailer stabilisation and the pre-filling of the brake system to reduce the stopping distance in emergencies. The electric parking brake automatically disengages when moving off. The particularly efficient and race-proven Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system is available as an option for the Panamera Diesel as well.

Typical Panamera look with a unique personality
With its proportions redolent of classic Porsche design forms, the Porsche Panamera Diesel stands out in its vehicle class. The new model features halogen headlights as standard, the Bi-Xenon system is available as an option as are the cornering lights of the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS). The side window surrounds are in matt black. The new diesel model features two oval single tailpipes in brushed aluminium that taper rearwards, thus emphasising the Panamera's dynamic rear profile. The Porsche Panamera Diesel runs on 18-inch alloy wheels with a five-spoke design fitted as standard, offering a glimpse of black brake callipers.

Interior equipment with all Panamera options
In terms of ambience and equipment, the Porsche Panamera Diesel's passenger compartment offers the typical elegant and sporty standard that is the hallmark of every Porsche Gran Turismo. The comfort seats with their electric eight-way adjustment of seat height, seat and backrest angle as well as fore/aft adjustment are included in the standard equipment. Taking this to the next level are the Comfort Memory Package with electric 14-way adjustment and the adaptive sports seats including Comfort Memory Package with raised seat side bolsters and electric 18-way adjustment available as an option. Heated driver and front passenger seats or heating for all four seats is available if desired. Similar to other models, the Porsche Panamera Diesel features two-zone automatic climate control as standard with separate temperature control and air distribution for driver and front passenger. Four-zone automatic climate control is available as an option.

The CDR-31 audio system is also included in the standard equipment with seven-inch colour screen, ten speakers and a total output of 100 watt. Taking this to the next level is the three stage offering comprising the Porsche Communication Management (PCM), BOSE® Surround Sound System or Burmester® High-End Surround Sound System. Also available as an option for the Panamera's V6 models as well are the familiar individual equipment options, such as for example ParkAssist front and rear, Porsche Entry & Drive or adaptive cruise control.

Nissan Juke Nismo Concept, 2012

  •  Nissan Juke Nismo Concept, 2012

Juke, the compact crossover that has single-handedly created an entirely new sector of the market, will be the first Nissan to be turned into a premium sports model. The Nissan Juke Nismo is bringing motorsport-inspired performance to the street.

Previewed as a concept at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the production version of the Juke Nismo promises more energy, more excitement and more innovation. The car will be built at Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK in Sunderland alongside other members of the Juke family with sales in Europe due to start towards the end of the year.

Detailed specification will be released closer to launch, but the Juke Nismo will combine edgy crossover styling with a choice of two technically advanced chassis, one with two-wheel drive and the other featuring four-wheel drive and torque vectoring. Both will have revised suspension settings.

A sporting attitude will be underscored by a tuned turbocharged petrol engine, while tougher looks inside and out will reflect the brand values of Nismo, Nissan's performance and motorsport division.

Nissan Juke Nismo Concept, first seen at the Tokyo Motor Show in December 2011 and being given its European debut in Geneva, is finished in signature Nismo colours of pearl white with red highlights.

It wears a body kit created by Nismo's aerodynamic specialists whose skill has been honed perfecting racecar bodywork. As on a racecar, the Juke Nismo Concept body kit is designed not just to look good, but also to be dynamically highly efficient. New parts include revised lower bumpers front and rear, wider wings and sill side skirts.

The grille pattern has been changed while the tailgate spoiler has been modified by the addition of side elements to control airflow more efficiently. Even the shape of the door mirrors has been altered to enhance the car's aerodynamic performance and reduce front and rear lift without increasing drag. The contact patch of the tyres has been increased to improve grip, which is further enhanced by the arrival of stylish new 19-inch alloy wheels.

Nismo treatment extends to the chassis which has been lowered and stiffened using proprietary parts of the sort that will be available from the expanded Nismo's parts catalogue, while the 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine has been uprated to deliver more power and performance.

Nismo touches can also be found in the interior of the Concept, where parts that interact with the driver's sense of sight, sound, look and feel - such as the steering wheel, pedals, gauges, gear knob and door trims - have been redesigned to provide greater involvement when driving. Further underlining the performance aspects of the car, special leather-trimmed bucket seats have been added while the importance of the tachometer means the dial and needle are illuminated in red.

A feeling of enhanced sporting quality in the cockpit can be attributed to a matt effect applied to previously reflective surfaces, while the dramatic centre console - shaped to resemble a motorcycle fuel tank - has been given a metallic coating to enhance the purposeful feeling of the Concept.

Nismo: the future
The Nissan Juke Nismo Concept is a taster for a raft of highly focused Nismo versions of Nissan products promised for the future and beyond. Nissan will conduct an ambitious expansion programme where the Nismo name will become synonymous with performance and premium sports variants of production Nissan models.

Another element of the expansion programme will see Nismo relocate to an all-new purpose designed global headquarters in Tsurumi, Yokohama at the start of 2013.

By bringing all Nismo's activities under one roof, the move will create a global centre of excellence for race and performance road car development. As well as a race shop, the centre will have a large maintenance area for service work, a heritage area where famous Nismo race and road cars will be displayed and a specialist store - the Omori Factory, named after Nismo's current base - where customers can buy performance parts and items from the Nismo Collection.

The larger site will also have ample space to hold more of the popular Nismo events for fans. The annual Nismo Festival, for example, attracts more than 30,000 fans ready to celebrate the company's racing heritage and achievements.
