For MINI fans looking to combine open-top driving fun with sophisticated individuality and an essential dose of Brit-cool, the MINI Convertible Highgate provides the perfect stage. The new special-edition variant of the soft-top four-seater seizes the limelight with its innovative and precisely coordinated splash of colours and materials. The MINI Convertible Highgate boasts numerous exterior and interior design features developed specially to suit the character of the car. Together with the extensive selection of on-board equipment, they provide a fresh interpretation of British style and premium feel in an open-top small car.

The 4 engine variants offered for the MINI Convertible Highgate, which produced over a limited period at MINI Plant Oxford. The new special edition is due to go on sale worldwide from spring 2012.

New exterior paint finishes, soft-top colours and wheel designs developed specially for the MINI Convertible Highgate provide the external expression of its exclusive aura. The new body colour Iced Chocolate metallic captures the imagination with its refined and understated basic colour and a special pigmentation that reveals a subtle, bluish lustre under the sun's rays. In keeping with the theme, the brown soft-top roof also has a light metallic sheen. The distinctive look is further enhanced by brown/black bonnet stripes with blue edging, while Midnight Black metallic or White Silver metallic paintwork can be specified as an option. The exterior mirror caps of the special-edition model are also painted in the body colour. Another feature developed exclusively for the MINI Convertible Highgate are the 17-inch Double Cross light-alloy wheels in a refined, subtly-shaded aluminium colour. The wheels' spoke arrangement is inspired by the pattern of the Union Jack flag.

The "Highgate" lettering on the side indicator surrounds, door sills and seat tags is a nod to the car's exclusive character, as are the bespoke colours and materials used in the interior. The Lounge Leather seats and leather Colour Line elements come in Dark Truffle and feature light contrast stitching. Light blue piping on the seats and Dark Truffle contrast stitching on the gearshift/selector lever and handbrake gaiters are further highlights. Stainless steel pedals, Suntouched Brushed Alloy interior trim elements, the Chrome Line Interior package and floor mats with Dark Truffle edging round off the stylish interior ambience of the MINI Convertible Highgate.

The new special-edition model sees MINI once again emphasising not only the individuality of the brand - as highlighted by the stand-out design features - but also its links to its native Britain. The name of the new special-edition model is taken from one of the most exclusive residential areas of London. Located in the north of England's capital, Highgate is known for its historic architecture and wide open green spaces, and is home to numerous showbiz celebrities.

The MINI Convertible Highgate can be ordered in MINI Cooper (90 kW/122 hp), MINI Cooper S (135 kW/184 hp), MINI Cooper D (82 kW/112 hp) and MINI Cooper SD (105 kW/143 hp) guise. Mercedes-Benz, SLK250 CDI, 2012

  • Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI, 2012

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is offering the sporty SLK Roadster with a diesel engine. The 150 kW (204 hp) four-cylinder power unit puts the two-seater at the top of its class in numerous respects. With a fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres, it is the most economical roadster in its segment. Thanks to its enormous torque of 500 newton metres it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, and delivers a top figure for acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h. The result is superior driving enjoyment both on winding country roads and on long motorway stretches. Like the other models in the latest SLK family, which was presented in January 2011, it combines lively sportiness with high-quality appointments and excellent comfort.

Diesel drive and roadster excitement do not go together - or so a common misconception would have it. Mercedes-Benz impressively demonstrates the contrary with the new Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI. Its four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2143 cc generates an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 500 newton metres of torque - as much as a petrol engine with twice the displacement would normally generate. This makes the new Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI the most powerful diesel model in its class, and gives the roadster the potential for extremely sporty performance.

Equipped with the standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission (a six-speed manual transmission will follow in the second quarter of 2012), the diesel SLK sprints from zero to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds and achieves a top speed of 243 km/h. Moreover, the flexibility of the Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI is nothing short of phenomenal. Thanks to its enormous diesel torque it accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in just 4.3 seconds - easily the best figure in this class, making for safe and effortless overtaking.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI is the most economical and therefore environmentally compatible roadster in its segment. It is happy with 4.9 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined consumption), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 128 g/km. In other words, the diesel SLK combines thoroughbred sports car performance with the fuel economy of a sub-compact. This guarantees great driving pleasure with great fuel efficiency.

The diesel engine achieves its exemplary output, torque, fuel consumption and emissions figures, as well as its highly impressive smoothness for a diesel unit, thanks to an extensive package of innovative technologies. These include fourth-generation common-rail injection with a rail pressure of 2000 bar and precise injection timing, as well as two-stage turbocharging. Like all SLK models, the Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI also features a start/stop system as standard.

The frugal fuel consumption makes the Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI a car with superior long-distance qualities. Using the European motorways, it is e.g. quite possible to drive from the North Sea to a beach on the Mediterranean non-stop. Very comfortable sports seats, a comfortable suspension setup and the largest luggage capacity in this segment also do their bit to create the right conditions.

As it shares the same genes with the other members of the successful SLK family, the Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI combines lightfooted sportiness with stylish comfort, a striking sports car design and absolute day-to-day suitability, while delivering top performance with exemplary ecology. This means that the diesel version too provides open-top driving enjoyment at an extraordinarily high level.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI is likewise available with a choice of three versions of the famous vario-roof - one of them the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. This glass roof can be changed from dark to transparent at the touch of a button. There are also three suspension versions available: a conventional steel suspension, a sports suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setup or a suspension with an electronically controlled, fully automatic damping system. The latter is part of the Dynamic Handling package, which also includes the Direct-Steer system and the Torque Vectoring Brake developed by Mercedes-Benz for particularly agile and predictable handling characteristics.

Externally the new Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI is no different in appearance from the petrol models. It even retains the twin exhaust system, and therefore has the same exciting look for which all the SLK models are known.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK250 CDI can be ordered from 13 September 2011. The price including VAT is € 41,828.50.

Skoda Rapid, 2013

  •  Skoda Rapid, 2013

Å koda is resolutely pursuing its model offensive, presenting its new compact saloon, the Å koda Rapid, just a few months after the introduction of the Å koda Citigo subcompact. The brand's most recent addition is to play a central role in the company's 2018 growth strategy and will be phased in on European markets from the autumn of 2012.

The Å koda Rapid impresses with lots of room, an expressive design, an excellent price-value ratio, a comprehensive safety offering and efficient engines. "This is a model which sets benchmarks in the compact saloon segment. The Å koda Rapid is a roomy, elegant and at the same time an affordable car for the whole family, impressing with clever solutions, cutting-edge technology and high economy. In short, it is a car permitting mobility in a comfortable, reasonably priced and environmentally friendly package. The right car at the right time," says Å koda CEO Winfried Vahland.

Lots of space and room at an affordable price
The driver and the passengers should have no reason to complain about a lack of room. "In its class, the Rapid is the new benchmark for roominess," says Å koda CEO Vahland. Though exterior dimensions, at (4.48 m in length, 1.71 m in length, 1.46 m in height), may be compact, the car will comfortably seat up to five persons. The Rapid's figures for knee and head room are best in class, as is the boot at 550 litres - truly family-size.

Cleverly done
Å koda's roomy latest offspring is a "simply clever" car through and through, offering no less than 19 of Å koda's typical "simply clever" solutions. Four of them are available for the first time in the Å koda Rapid, including a practical holder for the warning vest underneath the driver's seat. Storage for the ice scraper is ingenious: it simply slides into the inside of the tank filler flap. A refuse bin in the side door keeps the car's inside tidy. Another first for Å koda is a double-sided covering for the boot floor. In addition to these "premieres", the Rapid has a lot of other tried and true clever solutions on board such as a multimedia holder, a ticket holder, various cup holders, nettings on the inner sides of the front seats and an optional netting programme for the car's huge boot.

Å koda's new design: clear, precise, fresh, timeless and elegant
The Rapid is the first Å koda series car ever to fully feature the brand's newly formulated design language. "This is a car that gives out a clear statement at first glance: clear, precise, fresh and emotional," says Eckhard Scholz, Å koda board member for technical development.

Perfect proportions, clear and cleanly modelled surfaces and sharply drawn lines combine to create an attractive overall appearance. The front end displays a new take on Å koda-typical design elements. The new brand logo confidently stands out on the harmonically rounded front edge of the bonnet. The grille shows a finely drawn chrome frame and is formed by vertical slats. The headlight ensemble is grouped at the front of the Å koda Rapid to form a cloverleaf shape.

The body'sside also conveys pure emotion though a long wheelbase and a coupé-like silhouette, but also thanks to a precise and sharp tornado line creating a clear division of light and shadow. At the rear, the car's large tailgate is not merely functional, but also acts as a design element. In addition, distinctly shaped taillights in the brand's typical C shape and the new brand logo all combine to make the Škoda Rapid unmistakable.

A perfect family car
Škoda is aiming the Rapid especially at families. "Families will love the Rapid," says Jürgen Stackmann, Škoda board member for sales and marketing. "Here is a perfect first car at an affordable price in Škoda's familiar quality." Škoda has customers especially in mind who are successful in their professional and private life. At the same time, the Škoda Rapid is a response to changed customer needs. Says Stackmann: "People value mobility, but they may be unwilling or unable to spend too much money on their mobility. The Rapid stands for 'best value for money' and caters to exactly this sort of need."

The Rapid is a perfect complement of the model palette between the Å koda Fabia and the Å koda Octavia, making it at home in the large-volume compact segment. This so-called A segment currently accounts for 36 per cent of the world's automobile market. Within this class, saloons have a share of 42.3 per cent. Industry experts estimate the number of cars of this type sold worldwide will rise by about 50 per cent by the year 2020.

Comprehensive active and passive safety package
The Å koda Rapid is also big on active and passive safety. ABS and ESP systems are standard in EU countries. The car's long wheelbase, a precise chassis and a stiff body structure form the basis for stable handling. Functions such as the tyre pressure monitoring, fog lamps with so-called 'corner function' or the 'hill-hold control' assistant for starting up steep terrain, enhance the car's active safety level. As for passive safety, a comprehensive package will protect the car's occupants in case of a collision. It includes front, side and head airbags, adjustable-height 3-point safety belts with tighteners as well as headrests. The stiff body ensures excellent deformation behaviour of the car in a collision.

Efficient petrol and diesel engines
In Europe, the Å koda Rapid will be available with a total of four petrol and two diesel engines, all of them conforming to EU 5 standards. The petrol entry-level engine is the 1.2 l MPI three-cylinder producing 55 kW (75 hp). The other petrol engines are the 1.2 l 63 kW (86 hp) TSI, the 1.2 l 77 kW (105 hp) TSI and the 1.4 l 90 kW (122 hp) TSI.

The 1.6 litre diesel engine comes with direct common rail injection and a particulate matter filter and is available in two power variants, the basic diesel putting out 66 kW (90 hp) and scheduled for marketing in the second half of 2013. It may be combined with the optional seven-speed DSG (double-clutch transmission). The 1.6 l TDI CR version is more powerful, putting out 77 kW (105 hp).

CLEAR, PRECISE AND ELEGANT
The new Rapid is the first Å koda model to feature the brand's completely revised vehicle design. This design had been hinted in the "VisionD" and "MissionL" Å koda show cars. It now takes to the road for the first time in the Å koda Rapid. Its clear, precise, fresh and timeless design sets more than a creative accent in the compact saloon segment. The team around Å koda designer-in-chief Jozef Kaban have also shown that they definitely know how to marry functionality and an emotional stylistic vocabulary in this vehicle class.

The brand's new design language embodies precision, clear lines and a concept with a maximum of functionality. "The Rapid is an emotional car," says designer-in-chief Jozef Kaban. "Its design is precise and timeless, its modern look fills its elegant, pure shapes with fresh attractiveness. This involves perfect proportions, clearly formed surfaces and sharp lines and radii. The Rapid is an expression of the Å koda's confidence," says Kaban.

At 4.50 m in length, this compact saloon impresses with precise design down to the last detail. Cleanly modelled surfaces and sharply drawn lines effectively bring out the car's perfect proportions. The front end of the Å koda Rapid is a marked example of a reinterpreted Å koda design. A classy grille formed from 19 vertically positioned slats shows a finely drawn chrome frame. Modelled with much love for detail, the grille combines with the car's expressive headlights to form a unified graphic. This conveys optical width to the car's front and is echoed in the unit made from the fog lamps and the air intake in the front bumper. The redesigned Å koda logo is confidently positioned on the harmoniously rounded front edge of the bonnet. The chrome winged arrow clearly and precisely stands out on the matte black ground.

The cloverleaf shape made up by the headlight ensemble also takes its cue from the uniform design vocabulary. Below the headlights, fog lamps almost equal in size flank the lower air intake. The crystalline structure of their transparent covers is marked by sharp lines, a theme reminiscent of the high craftsmanship of Czech glass grinders.

The Škoda Rapid stands confident and solid. Its coupé-like silhouette and its long wheelbase especially underscore the elegance of the vehicle's overall shape. Stretched grooves highlight the car's longitudinal dynamics and harmoniously divide the lateral surfaces. A sharp tornado line creates a clean division of light and shadow. Every single line ends with an expressive conclusion.

The rear end of the Å koda Rapid also conveys the design's precision and freshness. It is as clearly shaped as it is distinctive. The taillights display Å koda's typical C design, yet in a new shape with a soft, crystalline grinding. Between the taillights, three lines in the sheet steel form fine triangles providing the car's rear with a special character element. The gaps between the fenders and the bumpers become an effective design element.

A large tailgate opens all the way to the edge of the rear window, giving access to a wide loading bay. This makes the tailgate as much a functional as a design element. The boot, at a capacity of 550 litres, is best in class among compact saloons. Folding down the rear seat backs will increase the volume to as much as 1,490 litres. Forcefully formed fenders house wheels up to 17 inches in size. The basic version comes with 14-inch rims. As with the exterior, so the Å koda Rapid's rich choice of wheels impresses with a wholly new stylistic vocabulary and a wide variety.

The interior of the Å koda Rapid extends the exterior's clear creative language, beaming with a tidy elegance and impressing with perfect ergonomics and high functionality. Four doors open wide to provide easy access for all occupants. The entire interior is generously laid out to provide space in comfort for five persons. With 65 mm of knee space rear the Å koda Rapid sets benchmark in its class. The cockpit with its horizontal structure exudes spaciousness. Finely drawn chrome elements on the control units in higher trim lines set radiant highlights. The easy-to-grip four-spoke steering wheel sporting the new Å koda logo sits in the driver's focus, as does the finely drawn combination display.

The control unit for the air conditioning, the radio and navigation unit and various controls in the central console have also been positioned with special regard for ergonomics. The newly designed seats impress with their contours and classy cloth covers, guaranteeing a pleasant driving experience. A host of storage compartments in the doors and on the central console provide lots of space, as do the seat pockets.

The Å koda Rapid is available in three trim lines: "Active", "Ambition" and "Elegance." There are also three interesting interior colour combinations for the dashboard and the door panels, namely Satin Black and Satin Black, Satin Black and Telluride Grey and Satin Black and Stone Beige.

Škoda's new design language is the result of intensive and long-term oriented work by an internationally staffed designer team. More than 70 specialists are involved in the drafting and designing of Škoda's models to come. The team is divided into five groups, each group being responsible for a specific area: exterior, interior, colours, digital models and technologies and finally clay models. Each new car is thus the result of teamwork in the best sense of the word. The design department is housed in the "Design Villa" on the premises of Škoda's Technical Development. The Design Villa is not just one of the most tradition-rich Škoda buildings, it may also be the best-guarded structure at Škoda's Mladá Boleslav plant.

  •  Mazda MX-5 GT Concept, 2012

The Mazda MX-5 GT Concept has been inspired by Mazda's podium winning MX-5 GT race programme and its debut at Goodwood is to test customer reaction to a high performance version of the iconic sportscar. Built by race specialists Jota Sport, the Mazda MX-5 GT Concept produces 205bhp from a normally aspirated 2.0-litre Mazda petrol engine which is mated to the car's standard manual gearbox. Suspension has been uprated to improve handling and is adjustable for different track conditions, aerodynamic assistance comes from a carbon front splitter, a rear diffuser and boot spoiler. The exhaust note has been enhanced with a sports exhaust system with a central tailpipe. Recaro seats enhance the driver stability and the interior features a number of carbon enhancements that help reduce weight. For customers who want to acquire the car for track use, it comes equipped with road slicks and body-coloured roll hoops behind the seats.

Jeep Grand Cherokee UK Version, 2011

  •  Jeep Grand Cherokee UK Version, 2011

Almost two decades ago, Jeep invented the premium SUV (sport-utility vehicle) segment with the introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. More than 4 million worldwide sales later, Jeep has comprehensively honed this winning formula and is now delivering the ultimate combination of Jeep 4x4 off-road capability and on-road refinement with the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

New Jeep Grand Cherokee has been designed on a new platform to deliver premium on-road performance while maintaining the Jeep brand's legendary four-wheel drive, torque-on-demand two-speed transfer case for extraordinary off-road capability and durability.

The new vehicle also offers significantly lowered emissions and improved fuel economy (up to 39 mpg) with its new turbocharged 3-litre V6 CRD engine, together with a world-class interior providing luxury, comfort and enhanced safety. Despite its rugged, trail-tested off-road capabilities, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a sophisticated, luxury SUV that can easily be driven on an everyday basis by anyone.
In the UK, new Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in two versions, Limited and Overland, both of which are powered by an all-new 237bhp 3-litre V6 turbodiesel.

Exterior Design and Dimensions
The all-new Grand Cherokee features a muscular and athletic new look with a high waist line and a steeply raked windscreen. A low drag coefficient illustrates the efficient aerodynamic shape of the vehicle.

The contemporary design language is nevertheless unmistakably Jeep, and is instantly recognisable thanks to the classic trapezoidal wheel arches together with the familiar Jeep seven-slot grille.
In terms of dimensions, although the car is approximately 7cm wider and 7cm longer than the model it replaces, the wheelbase has been stretched by over 13cm to give extra boot space, and more specifically, extra rear leg-room.

With regard to the cargo area, new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers up to 782 litres of space with all the seats in place - 11% more than the previous model; and the tailgate is power operated on the Overland version. Notwithstanding the amount of luggage space available, a full size spare wheel is carried.

The new Jeep also features short front and rear overhangs for much improved approach, departure and breakover angles and consequent superior off-road capability. The front spoiler is removable for when the terrain gets really tough, giving an extra four degrees of approach angle.

The Interior Design
A world-class interior has been achieved thanks to fine materials and elegant appointments, while maintaining a focused attention to detail with high quality interior fit and finish throughout.

Premium materials such as real wood, leather, chrome accents, LED lighting, and premium seating deliver a strong impression of refinement and luxury - expressive design, quality of materials; the precise fit of all panels… these elements also contribute to enhanced noise isolation.

New, soft-touch materials are used at key 'touch points' throughout; including doors, consoles and armrests.
The quality of the seat upholstery is another important feature of the world-class interior. Both front seats are heated and ventilated with eight-way power assistance and four-way lumbar adjustment, with a memory system on the driver's side. In fact, the front seats feature an all-new structure with enhanced bolster contours for improved comfort. The moulded shape of the upper seat shoulder area adds to the look and feel of the seating, while the 12-degrees reclining rear seats, (60/40 split folding), together with the longer platform, enhance comfort for rear passengers who have over 100mm of additional rear legroom.

Interior Equipment
Alpine Premium Sound System
The standard equipment Alpine Premium Audio System creates a full, realistic sound experience using a high-powered 12-channel, 506-watt amplifier powering nine speakers and a subwoofer. Optimally placed throughout Jeep Grand Cherokee's cabin, this surround-sound speaker system delivers an unparalleled aural experience. This premium audio system allows everyone onboard to hear music precisely as the artist intended it.

Media Centre
The Media Centre features an AM/FM radio, CD/DVD player, satellite navigation system (standard on Overland) that's controlled via a 6.5-inch touch-screen, and a 30GB hard drive. Owners can store up to 6700 tracks on the hard drive and upload music and photos through the USB port or from a CD/DVD. The system includes a single-disc CD player, and can also play DVDs when the vehicle is stationary and the transmission is in Park. Uconnect Bluetooth® with voice commands means that the sound system, sat nav and mobile phones can be operated hands-free.

iPod Interface
With the iPod Control, most iPod-compatible devices can be connected directly to the vehicle's audio system using the iPod control cable. The iPod can then be operated through the Media Centre sound system or via the steering wheel-mounted controls. While connected, the system even charges the iPod.

Keyless Enter-N-Go
As long as the vehicle's ignition keys are somewhere on the driver's person (maybe in a pocket or a bag) the vehicle picks up signals from the transponder and unlocks it, when the driver touches the door handle. It also activates the push-button starter: the driver just presses the brake pedal and pushes the button to start.

The vehicle's equipment can also be activated without starting the engine. Without a foot on the brake, the driver pushes the button once; pushes twice to turn on the heating/air conditioning and instrumentation; or three times to turn it off again.

CommandView panoramic sunroof (standard on Overland)
The front roof panel opens rearward, providing additional light and fresh air to front seat passengers. This front glass panel features an express one-touch open and close operation. The rear glass panel, which is fixed, provides extra light and visibility for rear seat passengers. A standard one-touch power sun-shade may be extended to cover the tinted glass panels when closed.

Platform
The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is the very first vehicle in the market to be built on this brand new platform. The structure was co-developed with Mercedes-Benz and will be used in next generation Mercedes vehicles. With an increase of 146% in overall torsional stiffness, it is now much stronger and more durable than before. As a result, noise, vibration and harshness levels have been drastically improved, giving much better on-road and off-road ride quality. The new platform engineering brings improvements in the following key areas:
    Manoeuvrability
    Overall agility
    Cornering ability
    Steering precision

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee tips the scale at 2,272kg, which is 38kg less than the outgoing model and represents a considerable achievement when the increase in dimensions is taken into account.
Outstanding touring attributes are another Jeep Grand Cherokee forte. The maximum towing capacity with a braked trailer is a class-topping 3,500kg, which includes an anti-sway damping system featuring a neutral position for flat towing.

Legendary 4x4 Capability
The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the new Quadra-Lift air suspension system, (standard equipment on Overland versions). Quadra-Lift air suspension system features five height settings for optimum ride performance:
  • Normal Ride Height (NRH): 8.1 inches of clearance offers improved fuel economy and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving
  • Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.3 inches for added height in clearing obstacles (9.4 inches)
  • Off-road 2: Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 2.6 inches of height for 10.7 inches of ground clearance
  • Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 1.5 inches from NRH for easy entry/exit and roof rack loading. NRH and Park mode are driver-selectable, giving the driver control over vehicle ride height
  • Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle 0.6 inches from NRH. Aero mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy

Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.1 inches of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. It operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls. Quadra-Lift enhances the ride quality and takes the Jeep Grand Cherokee another leap forward. It's a first-class closed system with a stored air reservoir for a faster response and no lift-time deterioration.

Driver benefits are numerous, and include:
    Ease of entry/exit for passengers
    Easier cargo loading and unloading
Improved off-road capability by increasing ground clearance, approach, departure and breakover angles
    Improved on-road ride comfort
Improved fuel economy at motorway speeds - automatically lowering vehicle height to reduce aerodynamic drag

In addition to the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Selec-Terrain traction control system (standard equipment on both Limited and Overland), lets customers choose the appropriate off-road setting for the optimum experience on all terrains. This feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, traction control and electronic stability control (ESC).

Selec-Terrain, coupled with the all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension system, offers drivers an adjustable suspension span that delivers world-class capability. The system's control dial allows the driver to choose from five driving conditions in order to achieve the best all-terrain driving experience.

Sand/Mud: Traction control and Quadra-Lift operate with sensitive response to wheel spin, and torque is tuned for optimal performance
Sport: Provides enhanced on-road fun-to-drive capability
Auto: Automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation
Snow: Vehicle traction adjusts for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads
Rock: Quadra-Lift air suspension system raises to maximum height (10.7 inches) and the transfer case, differentials, and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control

With the front air dam removed, and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee features a 34.3-degree approach angle, (compared to 32.3 on previous model), a 29.3-degree departure angle (compared to 27.5 on previous model) and 23.1-degree breakover angle (compared to 20.4 on previous model).

The all-new front and rear independent suspension features isolated front and rear suspension cradles. Variable-rate rear springs deliver improved on-road handling and comfort that complement the vehicle's off-road capability. The new multilink rear suspension features lower control arms and camber/tension links that individually control cornering, bump and braking forces. This is regarded as the optimum set-up for ride comfort and handling stability. The compact design of the system also allows the spare tyre to be stored inside the vehicle as opposed to underneath. Anti-roll bars are features on both axles.

Go Anywhere 4x4 Systems
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee employs a 4x4 system called Quadra-Trac II® which features a two-speed transfer box with low ratio gears and an electronically controlled clutch that allows variable torque distribution.

Quadra-Trac II's two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tyre slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximises traction before slippage occurs. When tyre slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction. Selec-Terrain is standard with Quadra-Trac II.

The drivetrain is further enhanced with sophisticated stability, hill assist and hill descent control systems featuring Brake Traction Control Systems on both axles (BTCS). BTCS uses the brakes to act on any wheel that is slipping, and allows additional torque transfer to those wheels with traction.

In addition, Hill Descent Control allows smooth and controlled descent on rough or slippery terrain without the driver having to touch the brake pedal. It applies the brakes to each wheel individually to slow the vehicle down and maintain driver control on steep slopes.

Meanwhile Hill Start Assist helps drivers make a hill start by keeping the brakes on for a short period of time after a driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal. If the throttle is applied when the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal, the brakes are released.

Engine
Jeep first showed the Euro 5-compliant V6 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee for the UK and Europe, at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The new CRD engine is more powerful, more fuel efficient and produces lower emissions than its predecessor.

Built by VM Motori and developed together with Fiat Powertrain Technologies, this new engine produces maximum horsepower of 177 kW (237bhp) at 4,000 rpm and torque of 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) at 1,800-2,800 rpm. This translates to 10 per cent more power and eight per cent more torque than the engine it replaces.

Even with its improved performance, fuel economy for the new 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine is 34.0 mpg (8.3 L/100km) on the combined cycle, an improvement of 19 per cent over the previous diesel engine. CO2 emissions (combined cycle) are also reduced by 20 per cent, now at 218 g/km.

From a retail perspective the improvement in CO2 emissions represents a saving of £1,220 in current VED taxation over a five year period compared with the outgoing model.
The V6 turbodiesel engine is fitted with new-generation, 1,800-bar injectors along with new MultiJet II technology, developed and patented by Fiat Powertrain, which made its debut in 2009 on the 1.3-litre diesel engine in the Fiat Punto Evo.

Engine Block Structure
The new engine features a compressed graphite iron, 60-degree block with aluminium cylinder heads and a two-piece structural aluminium oil pan. Bore is 83 mm (3.27 in) and stroke is 92 mm (3.62 in) for a total displacement of 2987 cc (182 in3). Bore spacing is 96 mm (3.78 in).

The engine is compact and lightweight, with overall dimensions of 695 mm (27.36 in) in length, 729 mm (28.7 in) in width and 697.5 mm (27.46 in) in height. Weight of the new engine, including ancillaries, is 230 kg (507 lbs).
The engine block features a notably stiffened crankcase construction, including a bedplate that provides a rigid and stiff carrier for the crankshaft. This in turn helps reduce overall noise from the lower reciprocating assembly and contributes to significant improvements in lowering overall noise, vibration and harshness.

Adding to the structural rigidity of the block, the two-piece aluminium oil pan has been designed to provide strength and contribute to the quietness of the engine. The lower pan has been reinforced for off-road use. Crankcase capacity is 7.7 litres.

Cylinder heads are constructed of aluminium and feature a chain-driven, dual overhead-camshaft design with four valves per cylinder. Intake valves measure 28 mm (1.1 in), and exhaust valves are 24.5 mm (0.96 in) in diameter. Combustion-chamber volume is 24.68 cm3 (1.51 in3).

A forged-steel crankshaft is supported by four main bearing journals fitted with four-bolt main bearing caps incorporated into the bedplate. Externally balanced, the crankshaft measures 442.2 mm (17.41 in), reducing the overall packaging requirements of the engine. Connecting rods, with an overall length of 162.9 mm (6.41 in), are constructed in cast iron.

Lightweight, cast-aluminium pistons are designed to provide minimal friction. The compression ratio of the new diesel engine is now 16.5:1, reduced from 18.1:1 on the previous model, contributing to cleaner combustion and providing more power.
All main bearings are a lead-free design for reduced environmental impact during construction and later recycling of the engine.

Engine Performance Features
The induction system includes swirl control to optimise combustion. Fitted between the intake system and the combustion chamber, swirl control effectively provides an ideal air/fuel mixture at all engine speeds.

Precise fuel delivery is through a 1,800-bar common-rail fuel injection system. Thanks to the new MultiJet II technology, which makes use of a special balanced solenoid valve, the new injector is capable of making up to eight injections per cycle with the possibility of managing the two main injections in a single modular profile (IRS - Injection Rate Shaping). This guarantees a reduction in consumption and polluting emissions of approximately 2% compared to a traditional injector and ensures a drastic reduction in noise levels.

The new 3.0-litre diesel engine utilises a single Garrett VGT 2056 turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Compact and lightweight, the turbocharger provides near-instant response and includes an air-to-air intercooler.

Fuel Economy and Emissions
Fuel economy for the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine is rated at 27.4 mpg on the urban cycle and 39.2 mpg on the extra-urban cycle. For the combined cycle, the fuel economy is rated at 34.0 mpg. At motorway cruising speeds, 700 miles can easily be achieved on a single tank of fuel. The engine is designed to run on EN590 ultra-low-sulphur diesel fuel.

For this power unit, cast-iron exhaust manifolds are utilised. Additional emissions controls include a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst and standard diesel particulate filter. Euro 5 emissions are met through an exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system that includes an EGR valve with DC motor and a high-performance EGR cooler with bypass valve.

Combined cycle CO2 emissions are now 218 g/km. Not only is the engine more frugal and environmentally-friendly, but it also delivers outstanding performance, providing the new Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 126mph.
